About this listen

England, 1940. Newspaper secretary Edie York wants nothing more than to be a real wartime reporter. But when she stumbles upon the death of a Home Guard soldier she must turn her investigative skills to sleuthing…

Rookie reporter Edie York dreams of being out in the field, instead of being stuck writing up the wartime headlines, transcribing Churchill’s rousing speeches on her cranky typewriter. So when her first real assignment one misty morning ends with the crack of a pistol shot and the sudden death of a Home Guard soldier, she’s determined to take her chance and investigate.

With the local police force, under the utterly irritating but outrageously handsome DCI Louis Brennan, stretched to the limit as bombs rain down, Edie strikes out alone. And she quickly discovers more than she’d ever hoped – or feared. From undercover spies to priceless stolen artwork, Edie is plunged headlong into a mystery that stretches from Manchester to Berlin.

But when she finds another body in the blackout, Edie realises she’s bitten off more than she can chew. With an exasperated Louis finally lending a hand, can Edie unveil the murderer and make headline news, her name in print at last? Or will she be next…?

A brilliantly addictive and totally twist-packed cozy historical mystery perfect for fans of Richard Osman and Agatha Christie. This is the first book in the Edie York Mystery series.

Previously published as Murder in the Blitz.

Enjoyable story that kept me guessing

I don't usually go for stories set in this period, but thought I'd give this one a go, and I'm really glad I did. Edie, the protagonist, is likeable and relatable and I quickly warmed to a number of the other characters too. they are well written, rounded and believable. The story is set in a city I've never been to, but I now have strong images in my mind as the scene was well set with descriptive but not overly flowery language.
I look forward to the next book.

Good Plot

I loved that it is set in war time a different type of setting from what I have listen to before. I like the characters and loved Edith's will to be a reporter not just another typeset. I was very much there with her on her journey. I found the main characters very believable and I was lost in the twists and turns of the plot. I loved that the murders were not who you thought they would be and a really good plot. can't wait to listen to the next two books.

Great story and narrator

Good plot with a twist. Historical drama at its most evocative. Narrator is good and authentic Manchester voices bring it to life beautifully

Wartime shenanigans

A good story although not hard to guess the wrong uns and a rather large plot hole I must have missed the answer to. Tha characters are fine although the police inspector goes from but a dick to noble veteran of Spain in about 10 minutes.

I enjoyed the mix of characters and could visualised them clearly. It felt like I was in 1940’s war torn Manchester. Loved the story and can’t wait to read the next book.

An enjoyable period crime classic

Loved the period details of wartime Manchester, the nods to Christie and the characters. Doesn’t hold back with the body count, which is a good thing. Looking forward to more.

A great read!

A really engaging plot, lots of well researched detail and a great lead character. Witty, well paced and unpretentious.

Easy listen

Although I had worked out the baddies early on and most of the reasons, I did enjoy this book and look forward to the next one. The narrator was very good
