Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of In The Dark by Cara Hunter, read by Lee Ingleby and Emma Cunniffe.

A woman and child are found locked in a basement room, barely alive. No-one knows who they are - the woman can't speak, and there are no missing persons reports that match their profile.

The elderly man who owns the house claims he has never seen them before. The inhabitants of the quiet Oxford street are in shock - how could this happen right under their noses?

But DI Adam Fawley knows that nothing is impossible. And that no-one is as innocent as they seem....

Foul language assailing the ears

Whilst the story and narration were good I cannot recommend this book as it was littered with foul language which is much more annoying when listening to a book than reading it. I am not a prude but gratuitous foul language adds nothing to a story, I think it detracts. I don’t recall such bad language in the first D.I. Fawley book so was disappointed. I won’t be buying any more of Cara Hunter’s books from Audible and have returned this one.

A real treat

I thoroughly enjoyed the first DI Fawley book and was delighted to see this had been released as I've done battle with a few below par crime stories as of late. Whilst having no real idiosyncrasies Fawley manages to nevertheless install himself as a strong character and the manner in which his past tragedy weaves through his thoughts is I think very well done. The split in narration is good although I am not always sure the divisions were in quite the right place. Fawley is nevertheless brought excellently to life by Lee Ingleby and Emma Cunniffe does a job thats not far behind. There are lots of twists not all of which I saw coming and which the author strives to keep going right until the end. A very good series. I only hope Cara Hunter now has Book 3 well underway.

nice twist but overall not gritty enough

The story had an intersesing twist but I expected more detail/Gore. Overall it was average.

So many twists and turns !

Well written and very likeable characters on the police team. Cara Hunter uses the same mix of reportage as she did in her first DI Farley novel, clever and informative. Four fifths of the way through her intention dawned on me .... and I groaned.
Really...... !? The ending didn’t work for me ... disappointing and not so credible. But please listen and see how it works for you.
Perhaps after the huge success of her previous novel the pressure on her to come up with a new sensation pushed the author to extremes. I’ll read no 3 now...or perhaps read the reviews first.

Excellent

Excellent narration - which makes the book for me! Good story, if a little 'stretched' at times. However, I am a beginning, middle and end, person, so found the ending a little .... well.....judge for yourself. Worth a read.

Convoluted and unbelievable

Book not bad until the later end. Story became convoluted and unbelievable. Content was unnecessarily graphic and for me unpleasant. Too many intermingled characters some of who were completely unrealistic. Couldn’t finish this book however hard I tried.
