Summary

Book five in the Gaunt's Ghosts series.

Gaunt's Ghosts make a daring drop assault on a vital world, but as tensions within the regiment reach boiling point, the enemy may not be the biggest threat....

Listen to It Because

The Ghosts are thrown into a new kind of war, sent into battle on grav-chutes to fight on platforms far above a toxic atmosphere. And the atmosphere in the regiment isn't much better as the feud between Mad Larkin and the really insane Lijah Cuu heats up...and turns deadly.

The story

Gaunt’s Ghosts embark on their most dangerous mission yet as they make a daring drop assault on the world of Phantine. With the elite enemy Blood Pact and vicious xenos mercenaries ranged against them and short of ammunition with no means of escape, things look grim for the Tanith First. But the greatest danger may come from within the regiment as an old grudge is settled and tragedy strikes.

So nearly perfect.

Firstly let me say, the gun's of Tanith is one of the best of the early Gaunt's Ghosts novels, and I'm delighted it's come to audio so quickly. I have always felt that Toby Longworth is the perfect 40k narrator, and he seems to always really set the right tone for Abnett's characters. So it's a real shame that this time around I have a gripe with the narration and annoyingly it's something that could so easily have been avoided. Dan Abnett carries characters through his novels, so in the case of the Guns of Tanith the Phantine pilots Brea Jagdea and Oskar Viltry appear in the later unconnected (to Gaunt's Ghosts) novel Double Eagle, no problem there, and I really love the job Toby Longworth did with the Audio book of it, indeed I think it's possibly one of my favourites so far. Why then did Longworth not continue the voices the Phantine pilots had Double Eagle in the Guns of Tanith? It's so jarring to go from the clipped British accents that fitted so perfectly with the Battle of Britainesque Double Eagle to the cod American voices in Guns of Tanith. Sure listened to apart it's fine, but since Toby Longworth has narrated virtually all of Abnett's books, it would not have been much to take note of those voices and carry it through, it's a small gripe but it feels a really missed opportunity.

My small narration gripe aside, it's a great book, and it's up there with the best of the series so far, I can't wait for the next instalment of the Tanith First and Only.

Curse you Abnett!

He viciously killed off one of my favourite characters in this book.
Very good book anyway and a great voice acting.
Too bad Longworth forgot how he voiced the phantine pilots tough.

Narration error so early, but still a great book!

About 50 mins in the narrator repeats a line with a mispronunciation, before getting it right on the third time.

Glaring error that seems like it should of been fixed considering the earliness it appears.

Otherwise, another great Gaunt's Ghost book!

Better and better

Each book I listen to in this series just goes from strength to strength, thus take seeing the ghosts go Airborne! Not always to their delight, as well as dealing with Khornes servants Gaunt has to deal with the internal problems of a mixed cultural and gender regiment and murder most foul, superbly narrated as always I cannot wait for the next book

Love this story

Like all the Gaunt's Ghosts books, a dramatic and developing story is supported by likable and engaging characters. The Ghosts have a strong position in this story, striking against the archery, without having to worry about their allies.

Awesome story, great narrator!

Great story as always, Dan Abnett is a master of writing real people. Although the narrator struggled on a particular sentence (had to redo it 3 times, which was still part of the audiobook), Toby Longworth again effortlessly performs multiple characters like it's nothing.

Feeling the series should have ended.

Really struggled to finish it. Have been listening to it on and off for a while now.

The story was predictable, and I didn't really enjoy it.

performance was on point.

Another fantastic performance

Toby Longworth excels once again at bringing this fabulous series of books to life. Probably the best narrator across the W40k library, in my most humble opinion.

Please complete the series with Toby Longworth!

This is my most re-listened to series on audible. The original material is brilliant and Toby's performances really bring everything together. Please keep them coming and please rerecord and complete the set with Toby as narrator!

Great story some bad editing.

A few cases where stuff repeats. Including one part where an entire sentence repeats like 3 or 4 times.

The story itself is great though

Great story...frustrating ending.

As usual, Toby Longworth does a most excellent job with his talented narration. A great story by Abnett worthy of Gaunt, but the ending is very frustrating and left a bad taste in my mouth.

Awesome but where’s the next book?

I’ve been reading/listening to this series consistently and consecutively and now I find audible does not have the next book in the series. Very disappointing. The book is awesome but not I’ve got this need to know what happens next and no way to do that while traveling.

Ending ruined the rest.

Great book with a thrilling storyline, ruined by a standard Dan Abnett downer ending.

Fething Cuu

Are any of these actually 5 stars in the grand scheme of things? Probably not. BUT..

Wanted grimdark, got grimdark. These books are such a guilty pleasure. Simple enough to shut down my brain for a few hours, but with just enough continuity to feel bad when a core character's story comes to an end.
