Brilliant change but still authentic
As a modern day addict of 40k audiobooks. I can find some stories droll and shallow.
but this story is incredibly authentic. and is beautifully written. the character development is exceptional, the story is perfectly balanced with action and plot.
its refreshing to listen to how the battle plays out in enough detail that you understand how they fight and what they do rather than a general recounting of "they came, they smash, the conqueror"
Toby Longworth lives up to what we now expect of him. that is excellent and authentic performances that a perfect for the 40k universe.
Bravo! more please Dan!!

A well crafted tale in a very busy universe
Having a chapter with no background story helps keep this space marine tale refreshing. Dan has done a great job keeping the story from turning into a ‘gore-fest’ and genuinely makes you feel as though the characters are individuals. It started slow but then you come to realise how each section has been crafted to weave the whole plot together cleverly so pacing is never an issue.

Very Good for 40k but below par for Abnett
Abnett is the best 40k author by some distance but the dry perfectionist world of the space marine is not where he flourishes. Ultimately still very listenable it doesn't reach the heights of his other work.

A 40k Odyssey
Dan Abnett perfectly constructs a story for Damocles Squad across several short stories. Throughout each we are given a deep insight into the greek-inspired culture of the Iron Snakes Chapter as well as the interesting characters within it. The novel features a fantastic performance by Longworth and the inclusion of a dog. Who doesn't love dogs?

shoehorned political drivel
I love 40k very much, but this is not a book I can recommend. There is quite a lot of inserted modern-day political and social justice warrior narrative. It is not done tactfully, but simply thrown in your face. Not sure if it is coming from Mr. Abnett or GW themselves..

Masterful
Dan Abnett strikes gold yet again - introducing us to some of the most believable, endearing, and HUMAN space marines in the Warhammer World. Hard to believe this is his first time writing Space Marines!
Perfect for fans who prefer smaller squad-focused space marine novels. An excellent choice for Abnett fans. I love the Eisenhorn novels, but I think I actually like the Snakes even more!

Dan Abnett does it again
A unique space marines chapter gets a unique book written about them as we follow the leader of an elite squad of space marines through several deployments. Normally we only see a single mission in most 40k novels, while in this we get to see more of a "day in the life" take. And as a result, it makes for a very fast read/listen. And an entertaining one at that.
It has a "stylised" feel to it I can't fully explain. There came a point while listening to this where everything being described seemed like something out of a kick-@$$ Genndy Tartakovsky animation, which I then started to imagine, and that made it even more awesome. But the fact that Dan Abnett wrote this should be enough of a reason to check this book out.
My only complaint is that we don't get more of a feel for the entire squad, instead focusing more on their leader and their apothecary. This leads to the rest of the squad feeling somewhat samey, which is a little bit of a let down after Gaunt's Ghosts gave us such distinct characters, but it's not as egregious as other 40k books.

A triumphant exploration of an intriguing slice of the 40k universe
Rarely have I encountered a Space Marine story so soaked in great narrative and imaginative culture. You really get to know not just Priad and his brothers in Damocles squad, as they grow and experience their slice of the 40k universe, but the whole chapter. Their rituals and values seep into the whole book and binds it together. The different short stories that make up the squads undertakings come together into a united whole by their excellent characters and the readers desire to experience the world as they live in it.
My favorite of the shorter adventures that make up the book as a whole would have to be the opening undertaking, as I am a great fan of stories where you get the ground level view of a normal human interacting with the shear might of the Astartes. It reminded me in the best ways of Spear of the Emperor which I also read and enjoyed greatly.
If there is anything I can fault the story for it is that it opens so well that some of the middle chapters didn’t shine as bright as they might had they stood on their own. But even then by the end of the story pieces come together and various ideas and side characters that are lain in these sometimes less engaging parts come together into a satisfying climax.
And a special mention to the narrator who does a great job at taking the wide cast of characters and breathing life into them with their performance. The different voices, personalities and quirks of the characters help to elevate the reading to a true joy to listen to.
