Summary

Some art takes on a life of its own. A beautiful house. A loving family. Two kids, a dog, and a tenure-track professorship teaching art at the local university. Dan Rineheart is living the dream. But all dreams must end.

When an anonymous painting arrives at the university, Dan is tasked with uncovering the artist. No title. No name. No signature or frame. It’s a disturbing work of grotesque perfection. A work of art...that changes with each viewing. So begins the nightmare. Where painted clocks tick-tock in the dark hours before dawn. Where shadow-wrapped children stalk the halls of a once happy home. Where all paths lead to a forsaken artist and their impossible creation. This is the nightmare Dan Rineheart must enter before it shatters his sanity and devours his family.

broody and dark

This book is a beautifully written story of a tragic event between two brothers and its dark consequences.
Dan is quite lost in his life. He has it all, a lovely adoring wife and sweet children, a nice home and a rewarding job as an arts professor.
But Dan has dark secrets, where his cheating on his wife is the least of it. After receiving a disturbing anonymous painting, his darkness slowly unravels threatening to destroy everything he holds dear.
Andrew Van Wey writes beautifully, and the audio narrator Tom Jordan's broody voice brought the book to life. A slow burn atmospheric story with some twists and a big reveal, it is never boring and i found myself anxiously awaiting free time to listen more.
If you enjoyed the author's other book "Head like a hole", this will definitely has to be your next read.

“There would be no happy ending”

Gripping and intense throughout. I’d already listened to book 1 and thought it was great and this didn’t disappoint either. I can’t wait for the next in the series.
The narration is brilliant too. Great character voices and the intensity and atmosphere Tom gets across is amazing.
This is my honest opinion on a free review copy.
