Summary
A world on the precipice of the apocalypse. A secret forged in the flames of war. A chance to start over.
For John Sutton, only one of those three things matters.
Retired from a decade of brutal war, he wants nothing more than a quiet pastoral life while he does his best to stem the steady increase of his Doom Points before they hit 100, signaling the start of the end.
He’s been given a small farm on the outskirts of the empire as thanks for his service, but no matter how far he travels, it's impossible to escape the war's devastating effects on the world.
Bandits, suspicious townsfolk, a mysterious pair of siblings, and a secret that lurks in the mountains all threaten John’s peace. It will take all of his considerable power to keep from burning everything to the ground.
Don't miss the start of the next great Fantasy LitRPG Series by Seth Ring, author of Nova Terra. Pre-order your copy today and explore a world whose secrets have been buried under decades of war.
About the Series: Mixing slice-of-life with epic fantasy action, mystery, magic, cultivation, and a broken game system that seems determined to make everything as hard as possible for the already overpowered protagonist, this LitRPG/GameLit series is perfect for those who enjoy exploring rich worlds and complex characters.

Unexpectedly Good Book!
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. The story is a bit different than your normal summoned to another world\LitRPG book. There are slice of life notes with a good helping of action.
The world building is good, characters are well written and the magic\points system is explained well.
The narration takes a bit of getting used (main character sounds like Clint Eastwood), but once you do the book flies by.
Definitely Recommend!

I don't understand why this is so highly rated?
I might just be the wrong audience for this type of story. I just don't get it. The story is just so dull that not even Michael Kramer's exceptional performance could salvage it for me. This whole first book just seems to be setting up the narrative for something *potentially* grandeur in the later books, but if a story can't really capture your attention from the get-go, then why bother wasting your time?

It's a story that grows on you
Ok so at this point Seth Ring, is becoming a hero and a villain in pretty much equal measure.
I first came across Seth's work via Nova terra. Having finished those ten audio books I discovered that he has also written this.
Battle Mage farmer is a bit of a slow burner, but its a steady introduction to John's world.
Seth again does a brilliant job building the world up around the characters and the point to pick up John's life at retirement is inspired.
book 4 has just been released and so I have 3 more to go through so i am a very happy person at this point.
my bank balance however cannot say the same

Brilliant
I don't think I've been been sucked into a book this much, I listened to it all in 3 days. the story is full of mystery that's so well written you cant always tell what the plot twists will be. and the narrator, I don't think I've been more impressed with a narrator in, well I think forever. Michael's voice for John is absolutely incredible to listen to and really tickles the brain especially at the end. you've gotta give this a listen

Another great adventure begins
I really enjoy how Seth Ring builds the start of his book series. I was expecting a ‘farming’ book, and whilst the MC does do farming related actions - there is an element of real world life building - we learn there is more to the MC throughout this first book.
This is certainly worth the credit for LITRPG and fantasy fans.

Worthwhile MC
Finally an MC who doesn’t act like he has to convince people to treat him decently. One that doesn’t treat every suspicious, annoying, or downright hostile side characters like people he must get to love and understand him as a “nice” guy. Litrpgs have awful MCs, usually owing to a lot of amateur character writing and what I assume is some level of projection regarding the misconception of what a “nice guy” actually is. But seriously, a typical MC would make this book 3* longer with no added story, but plenty of pointless and I mean pointless self-reflective whining.
The supporting characters, especially Ellie and Ben, seem great but I don't understand why the author is hell bent on slowly turning a strong, stable character who's been through hell into unsure and confused teen. The plot is also built to strongly discourage action. His mission is basically to avoid most of the things people like about LITRPGs.

Not my favorite.
The main character could be replaced with a post of stoic wood and no one would be able tell the difference.

Seth Ring Hits It Out of the Park AGAIN!
Having consumed all of Seth Ring's other works, Nova Terra, I went into this book expecting much. And boy did he deliver!
Having been summoned to this game-like world some 10 years ago, John, our protagonist, suffered through 10 years of war and strife to retire with honors to a small out of the way farm in a valley far from the rest of society. Thus, there is a slight slice-of-life feel that was certainly welcome, especially since you could tell that Ring did his research into what farm life might have been like. John, a very over-powered mage with the ability to control flames, also uses his magic in very unique and interesting ways, such as drawing the heat from freshly chopped trees to cure the lumber, and welding metal rails together to create a track for a wagon. Despite his desire to be left alone however, John is drawn into altercations with the local class holders, and an adventuring party, the ramifications of which, could have far-reaching effects.
The side characters are also given their own and unique personalities. Elly is a strong and independent young lady trying to do best for herself and her younger brother, while Ferty was just a hoot!
While the book is technically LITRPG, it's not very crunchy. There are no minutes on end of stats and skills.
If you enjoyed books like Beware of Chicken, I definitely recommend this book. I am eagerly awaiting book two.
And as always, Kramer killed it with the narration!

An entertaining listening experience
My first book experience from Seth Ring and from just this first book, I've added him to my top tier list of authors. This title is the 3rd series with a farming motif I've listened to, Beware of Chicken, Oh, Great! I Discovered How to Cultivate being the other two and while there are similarities to all of them, there is also many differences as well. Furthermore, as one who relishes litRPG and progression titles, I found them all quite entertaining. Thus far, this title appears to be mostly a Slice of Life novel with hints of progression and/or possible RPG elements in subsequent titles.
Michael Kramer's performance is very well done, as I would expect no less.
Onto Book 2.

Spaghetti Western Litrpg
This is the perfect combination of spaghetti Western story arc and Swords and Sorcery motif. John is badass as Clint Eastwood, and the wholecast of characters are interesting and realistic. The tone reminds me of "Outlaw Josey Wales". Tgr litrpg elements are present but not central. The most interesting mechanic is the doom points which is unique and adds suspense to John'd actions even though he is Overpowered otherwise. Overall amazing book I am hooked and highly recommend!!

comfortable voice, slow start but hot finish
I really enjoyed this book. John is a character that is definitely a slow burn as a main protagonist but his his struggles with being a monster but not a monster and trying to have a regular everyday life is something really great to be a part of. I really enjoyed the narrator his voice is nice and soothing. It can make parts of the book kind of hard to sit through because it can put you to sleep. But in the end he is a great narrator that fits all the characters of the book the book save for the female ones because of his low soothing voice. The only thing I wish is for Ellie to have a little bit more agency than she actually has. I feel like she is supposed to be this tough farm girl with farm girl which she doesn't come across that way.

Beating up kindergarteners
An OP protagonist asserts himself over normal people. No stakes, no strife. Michael Kramer's narration is perfect as always, although the expectations it sets creates certain dissonance with the story.
