Summary

Ilea likes punching things. And eating.

Unfortunately, there aren’t too many career options for hungry brawlers. Instead, the plan is to quit her crappy fast-food job, go to college, and become a fully functioning member of society. Essentially—a fate worse than death.

So maybe it's lucky that she wakes up one day in a strange world where a bunch of fantasy monsters are trying to kill her?

On the bright side, "killing those monsters right back" is now a viable career path! For she soon discovers her new home runs on a set of game-like rules that will allow her to punch things harder than in her wildest dreams. Well, maybe not her wildest dreams, but it’s close.

With no quest to follow, no guide to show her the way, and no real desire to be a Hero—Ilea embarks on a journey to discover a world full of magic. Magic she can use to fight even bigger monsters.

She’s struggling to survive, has no idea what will happen next, and is loving every minute of it. Except, and sometimes also, when she’s poisoned and/or has set herself on fire. It’s complicated.

Listen to the story that took Royal Road by storm with more than 60 million views and counting.

Battle nutt the story.

ilea is likable if a bit too fixated on battle and naive. the story itself has interesting worldbuilding and several hints of different mysteries in the world to come.
Andrea is one of my favourite narrators amd she does another fantastic job again

MC pulls down what could have been a great story

so straight up I dislike the main character, her response to anything can be boiled down to 3 choices.

1. huh
2. stupid laugh
3. fuck

Seriously have a drink anytime one of those are used if you will be in a coma before the end of chapter 1.

I also hated the fact she has no problem escalating a confrontation with people with insults and bravado then immediately has to cry because she needed to kill them all.

Would thoroughly recommend

Although a bit of a diamond in the rough, I would definitely recommend. A new and different lit rpg book that isn’t wildly sexist and has a likeable MC. The narrative is a little disjointed but I’m sure that was just as the author was just setting the scene for a gran adventure.

started strong became a trope

admittedly, it might change as I didn't finish. but went from an interesting world and concept to just another op hero power fantasy. which is fine if that's what you're looking for, but it's a dime a dozen story

A good start

This is an enjoyable jaunt into a new world. The starts is a bit lazy, the protagonist lands in new world with no explanation why but hey ho, this is not the first time. It's written well enough and proceeds at a decent pace and although there is no clear path as to where the story is leading it's enjoyable enough.
The narration is as good as you would expect from Andrea Parsneau but it's a bit odd hearing characters that sound the same or very similar to those from the Wandering Inn but inevitable I suppose. I've already listened to book 2 and I'll keep going unless it goes the way of some series and gets boring.

Great book but I don't like the MC much.

this book is good. I like nearly everything. the side characters are good and have their own things going on and its well written. the MC is the only thing I dislike partially. alot of the time she's fine but it's incredibly hard to get over how completely stupid she is. she's genuinely brain dead and only survives because she wouldn't be the MC if she died.

pretty early on she kills people and spends like 20minutes thinking she's a bad person then goes "ohh well" this becomes a theme in this book and its sequel. most of the time it's super leveling and light hearted then the book switches genre and goes super dark. the mc gets all serious and acts like a normal person Instead of the stupid naive battle junkie moron she's portrayed as. this would be a good story development if she actually changed AT ALL from any of this. she does not. at the end of the second book she's still stupid and naive and hasn't changed AT ALL. After all the deaths she's witnessed and people she's killed no change in personality. a personality that sucks in my opinion.

Narration: the narrator mostly did a good job she is definitely talented in this field. the main problem I have with it is the "DING 'Blah blah' " this happens so often in this audibook it actually started hurting to listen to and the second book I mostly skipped the level ups and stuff as they go over her whole stats ALOT. in this book it's manageable.

another thing to note which I can't say if it's the book or the narrator. "EVERY CHARACTER AWKWARD LAUGHS" this one actually gets annoying. every time someone speaks they chuckle before or after saying something. it happens so much... again don't know why this is but if its the narrator buying time while she thinks what/how to say a line she needs to stop it's incredibly annoying when two people are having a serious heart to heart and one chuckles before saying something heavy when they don't have that type of personality.

I mostly talked about the issues I had because they were more notable but the vast majority of the time I simply was enjoying the book which is why I think these things bother me because the book could have been even better for me if these things were different. hope you enjoy it it's pretty good.
