Summary

I’m not looking for a mate, but then Rick walks into my life....

Work hard. Play hard. Never fall in love. I’ve never needed anything else, no matter what the other members of my pack think. But when a sweet omega brings his daughter to my self-defense studio, suddenly I’m thinking of turning over a new leaf.

Rick’s scent calls to me like nothing before and I need him in my bed. My wolf is determined to have him, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make him mine. The headstrong detective can take care of himself, but now it’s my job to keep him safe.

But Rick has been hurt before and when his doubts about my past threaten our future, I’ll need to find a way to make him see that he is more than enough for me. Can I convince my mate that we’re meant to be? Or will our new family crumble before I can claim him as my own?

Story was uneven and turned weird near the end

This story started out great with a playboy shifter, Dean, whose life is turned around when he scents his fated mate. Rick is attracted to Dean, but is apparently scarred by a past Alpha, lover, boyfriend? (it's never really explained) who left him and his daughter, Emma. This is mentioned a couple times, but what happened is not explained. He gets more involved with Dean, when Emma is bullied and she enrolls in Dean's karate class. The relationship between Dean and Rick goes back and forth because Rick keeps changing his mind, waffling between whether he loves Dean or whether he needs to stand on his own. At times, he seems all in, and then he won't even talk to Dean. It just got really annoying. Then at the final 1 hour mark, the story got weird. Rick is suddenly having a nightmare and strange feelings that something bad is going to happen. There are events of property damage and a violent attack on Emma and Rick. Rick cuts Dean completely off like somehow it's HIS fault, and it just made no sense. Then around 30 minutes to go, Rick has an epiphany that he's been a total a$$, wants Dean to claim him, and they all go on to a HEA in the last 15 minutes. There are also family issues with both MCs mothers that are not fully explored. I'm sorry, but it was all too disjointed and strange.

The narration was really good, with different and distinct voices for all the characters.

I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Wonderful way to continue the story!

It was so refreshing to find this captivating story for book 8! The author made a nice move involving another pack and another fated couple with an entertaining backstory, to give the series a little turn. Of course, well writen characters, interesting topic about bullies while emphasizing the importance of friends and a circle of support to overcame It, helped to cement a wonderful reading. Besides all this, the professional narration of Mr Bellows, a very nice voice and acting and a smooth character creation were the main reasons behind my enjoyment of this book. Loved It!

Great story and performance

I thought I knew how the characterisations in this book would work and I was delighted to find my expectations were completely wrong in wonderful ways. I expected Dean to be the character I was going to be wanting to slap upside the head to get to accept his fated mate and settle down. He has been the total playboy - sleeping around, flirting with anyone in sight and even betting his beloved motorcycle that even if he found his mate he would walk away and keep his freedom. Then, when he finally did accept the idea of a mate I expected him to push strongly for the bond. That was so wrong. As soon as he scents Rick he is totally smitten but he approaches gently, not like a steamroller. Rick is the one I was actually annoyed with initially. He deals poorly with his daughter being bullied at school and is too sure of his own ability to protect her and do everything alone. As the story develops we begin to understand why this is and he becomes a sympathetic character as well. I really enjoyed the fact that this plot line of bullying (and some truly evil characters) is not one you encounter every day in mpreg/shifter romances. It provides the perfect opportunities to throw Dean and Rick together and to bring out all Dean's protective Alpha instincts. Emma, Rick's daughter, is a wonderful character! If you hesitate to read books where teenage girls have a large role, don't hesitate here. Emma is not the stereotypical moody teenager. She is bright and charming and her reactions to the bullying are realistic and not over the top. It is so satisfying when the baddies get their comeuppance. I have not read the previous books in this series and had no trouble following anything. It might help to be a bit familiar with mpreg/shifter/Alpha-Omega tropes but again, I don't think that is a requirement. Enough information about that is provided and the characters and the story will carry you right along. I think Jack Bellows did an excellent job performing this one. He caught the characters of Rick and Dean perfectly and succeeded with Emma's voice. I worried about that as she was a favorite character from the book.

Rick and Dean

Dean Hardwick is the Alpha to the Oceanside Pack, he makes a bet with Jaxson that he won't mate his fated mate, that is until Omega Rick walks into his life and turns everything around. The mating Ceremony had me in tears of joy. Brilliantly read and written

The worst of the series

I've listened to all of the Timberwood Cove series and liked most of them (the sixth one notwithstanding because the narrator makes it unbearable), but for the life of me I cannot figure out why anyone would give this one more than one or two stars. The writing is fine, typical Liam Kingsley, and the narrator is very good, but holy cow, the character of Rick is just atrocious. He just keeps having freak out after freak out. I swear, you know that thing romance authors do where they sometimes have pointless conflicts arise because they're trying to pad out the length of their books? Rick has at least three of these, and, while none of them make THAT much sense, the final one is so unexplained, so out of left field, and so out of character that I honestly thought he was being bewitched or poisoned or something and that was making him do and say and think the stupid, bizarre things he did and said and thought.

But nope! He's just a complete jerk. You can sort of see it throughout the entire novel; his character is just the whiniest, most self-centered creep I think I've ever come across in a romance novel. Dean is fine, the secondary characters are all fine, and Rick's pubescent daughter is fine I guess (kids that age are always irritating in fiction and Emma is no exception but she's certainly no more irritating than any other stupid kid). But Rick is simply irredeemable. I actually stopped listening to the book about half an hour before the end because I hated him so much I didn't feel as though he actually deserved the happily ever after that I assume he gets.

Liam Kingsley is a good if somewhat formulaic writer of this genre, and most of the Timberwood Cove books are worth a listen, but do yourself a favor and skip this one.

A decent perspective

It's kind of weird when you are getting from another pack perspective after being around the same characters, but still a good book for the series. My only complaint was that the audio book was missing pages 12 through 15 from chapter one, I hope that gets fixed.

I love and hate how the end of each story basically tells u the next relationship you are going to see in the next serious. I hate because some of the books are missing.

Give love and mates a chance!

Playboy alpha wolf shifter and an untrusting human detective find connection and love.  I really liked the narrator in this audible book.  His voice and pacing were really good.  I enjoyed how he brought Rick and Dean to life for me.

The story-line kept me interested and I enjoyed watching Dean, the wolf shifter accept that he had a fated mate and really commit to wanting a relationship with Rick the detective.  Rick's fear of violence and of getting his heart broken again were well done and not overplayed.  I love how Rick's mom helps him accept his mate.

This is a complex story about helping a child deal with bullies, accepting love and learning to trust.  There is action, some violence and lots of great banter.  There is emotional content as both men learn to be vulnerable and to give love a chance.  There are some twists and turns, surprises and a few misunderstandings and compromises.  There are some wonderfully steamy moments and a very happy ending for this couple.

A Good Book

This is the eighth book in The Timberwood Cove Series. Reading the previous books in the series will make this book more enjoyable. A fascinating book the writing was good. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters captivating. The characters were developed and thought out. Rick and Dean are the MC’s of this book. I can recommend this book as a good read/listen. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

Can you trust again???

One a playboy and the other unable to trust in a love that'll remain faithful is a formula for angst and drama. Being Fated Mates changes everything either saw as the future. The narration was a good pairing for this

It was an okay story, narrator made it easier to follow. I just wasn’t connected to the characters they felt flat or lacking. And I wasn’t too thrill with the plot.

Dean & Rick

Dean is the alpha of his pack and quite the Playboy. He never expected to find his fated mate, much less to want his fated mate. Rick is perfect for Dean but because of his past he’s very reluctant to trust Dean, especially since he knows about his Playboy ways. But fate always knows best even when it’s not an easy journey but definitely an enjoyable one to a wonderful HEA. The narrator did a great job with the story and the characters. I voluntarily reviewed a gifted copy of this audio book.
