Summary

The first woman had her lungs ripped out. When the same gruesome ritualistic method was used again, it was clear that the same killer was responsible. But there is no precise evidence to link the two cases, except for a tantalising email.

Kriminalhauptkommissar Jan Fabel (half-Scottish, half-German) is a man of conscience and imagination. In his desperate attempt to solve the case before more victims are discovered, he gradually uncovers layer upon layer of intrigue. How can he track a murderer who leaves no trail, whose victims seem purposefully random and whose motive reaches far beyond greed and lust, into the darkest recesses of the human soul?

this series by craig russell is brilliant

hi, i find craig russel favel series narrated by sean barrett absolutely riveting. they are so different to the run of the mill crime stories where the detective has drinking problem and/or argues with seniors.. in these books favel is an experience officer who became a policeman because of an unfortunatl murder of a girlfriend while he was a student of history. he changes his focus from history to police work , specilising in particularly strange and sometime gory (but explain in a pleasant way without colourful language) murders . there is none of the 'f' and 'c' language that some authors think is necessary . the only time flavel utters an explitive is when any normal person would. i wish they were more of these books with sean barrett narrating.

Enjoyable

My first Craig Russell - well paced and well worth a read. I found this book very interesting and different.

Overcooked and a bit disappointing

After enjoying several other books by Craig Russell featuring the Glasgow crime scene with the resourceful Lennox, I found this German tale much less successful.
The story is extremely gruesome but the characters are not so interesting or believable. Lennox is a far more complex and intelligent man -a flawed and humorous hero who has to deal with a rich assortment of characters. In comparison the Hamburg cops seem to lack good judgement and keep walking into trouble. Even I could see the significance of a very obvious piece of information long before the detective.
The book ends with a cliffhanger but I won't be coming back. Certain phrases and adjectives are overused and I began to feel that I had been drawn into a lurid and sensational piece of fiction. I felt compelled to listen to the end and suffered some very sordid and disturbing descriptions without the rewards of a believable plot.
The tale has some well drawn scenes and is often suspenseful but even Sean Barrett couldn't make me believe in this overcooked Book. I imagine this was written earlier than the Lennox series and Russell has become a better writer.

complex

I bought this because I'd run out of Lennox books. It took me a while to get deeply involved
but by the time I finished listening I'd formed 'the bond' with the characters. I notice that I come to expect, or is it need? that bond with an audiobook these days.

The female characters are superbly invented. Good feisty solid women without maddening feminist agendas or un-feminist soppiness. I liked them all.

Most of all the random brilliant sentence is there again. I'm envious of the writing skills.

The narration is flawless in my opinion. This isn't Lennox so do expect something different. It is much more complicated but nonetheless it wasn't wasted time.

Too much blood!

Hmm, characters interesting, but story terrible! I have never heard/read such a grisley set of crimes in a detective book. The plot is utterly mad, thankfully. The author seems to have done some reasearch, but he's got carried away. Far from excting, I found the crimes to be so nasty as to be hard to listen to. I am a huge fan of the Larson books, so I can cope with some nasty, but this book seemed too souless for me, as if the 'good' detectives were just a cover for the author to revel in gore.... call me cynical. There wasn't much detection as such, just a LOT of death. I read the second one of these books too, for some silly reason, and it was even more over the top nasty. Not for me. Three stars because the reading is good, and the detectives are interesting, I would have liked far more about them, and less death!!

Superb

I can highly recommend all Craig Russell's books featured on here but especially his Fabel novels and Sean Barrett's narration just adds to the experience. Absolutely superb.

Hooked

My first but definately not my last Craig Russel. Had me gripped from beginning to end. Every character in the story comes to life.

As good as Lennox but Different

What did you like best about this story?

I though the development of the characters worked well, there is a good plot with lots of twists and turns. Created a very good feel of Hamburg

What does Sean Barrett bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

His interpretation is always great

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Hamberg Police vs Ex Communist KGB Vikings
