Summary

The splendor of the Swedish mountains becomes the backdrop for a bone-chilling crime.

On the day Stockholm police officer Hanna Ahlander’s personal and professional lives crash, she takes refuge at her sister’s lodge in the Swedish ski resort paradise of Åre. But it’s a brief comfort. The entire village is shaken by the sudden vanishing of a local teenage girl. Hanna can’t help but investigate, and while searching for the missing person, she lands a job with the local police department. There she joins forces with Detective Inspector Daniel Lindskog, who has been tasked with finding the girl. Their only lead: a scarf in the snow.

As subzero temperatures drop even further, a treacherous blizzard sweeps toward Åre. Hanna and Daniel’s investigation is getting more desperate by the hour. Lost or abducted, either way time is running out for the missing girl. Each new clue closes in on something far more sinister than either Hanna or Daniel imagined. In this devious novel by the bestselling author of the Sandhamn Murders series, discover what it will take to solve a case when the truth can be so easily hidden in the coming storm.

Critic reviews

“Laura Jennings narrates this Nordic noir with style.… Jennings's use of authentic-sounding accents and place names creates the perfect backdrop. Her strong characterizations bring the wide cast of individuals to life, and she creates a likable character in Hanna, who is plagued by self-doubt. Jennings's timing helps to build the tension as the plot heads toward the exciting conclusion.”AudioFile Magazine

“[Laura] Jennings skillfully portrays Sten’s vivid characters and brings out the broad range of emotions and the effect of violence on this small town. A perfect recommendation for readers of Scandi noir. Share with fans of Karin Fossum and Sara Blaedel.”Library Journal

"Of special appeal to listeners with an interest in Police Procedural Mysteries and the adventures of Women Sleuths, Hidden in Snow by novelist Viveca Sten is masterfully narrated by the impressive storytelling talents of Laura Jennings. A true delight for fans of riveting suspense thriller fiction.”Midwest Book Review

Drawn out story-telling

Although the plot and its twists and turns were interesting, I found the storytelling far too expansive and in places rather repetitive in language use. As has been said before, the ending - in stark contrast to the bulk of the book - was rather rushed and compressed. The final dénouement involved someone I had anticipated being implicated. The book was clearly translated for the US market and, as a UK listener, I found some word choices jarring. Nevertheless, I enjoyed parts of the book and would try another if this becomes the first in a series of books.

Thoroughly enjoyed

I’ve not heard of this author before but I enjoyed both the story and the performance. I did feel that the ending was a little rushed, as if the author just wanted to get it finished but, it didn’t detract from the overall story too much

Captivating and atmospheric Nordi Noir

I’ve enjoyed all of Viveca Sten’s previous books and the excellent narration by Marlaine Delargy. This was a refreshing new police procedural and I hope there will be more to follow.

Good solid scandi noir

Very enjoyable, evocative setting, troubled heroes and dastardly deeds. Dark Sweden at Xmas. Actually low on gore and murder compared to most snow noirs I've read, so would recommend for anyone put off by that normally. Very relationship driven.

Couldn’t stop listening!

My friend, who was reading the book, suggested this to me and when I bought it I didn’t realise I had seen a tv adaptation and thought it was very good. But the book is 100% better than the tv series, the character development is excellent, the plot twists and turns, keeping you guessing all the way through. Viveca Sten is a master of the writing craft, with fabulous descriptions, clear demarkation between the different points of view so no head jumping in mid chapter. The tension is palpable, not just in the major character arcs but through the supporting cast.
The narration is wonderful too, I have never heard a woman narrator doing such excellent male voices and she adds to the tension with her pacing. I have IMMEDIATLEY bought the second in the series.

Very enjoyable

I’ve read all the Sandham stories to was looking forward to this new series. Although it took a while to get going, as the author was putting the backstory in place, it was very enjoyable and I look forward to listening to/reading more in this series.

Not a great story

Not sure why I finished it. Lacked any sort of tension. Jumped all over the place. Narrator a bit monotonous. Too many different char grr viewpoints which were too shallow. And a lot of boring repetition of same themes from the same characters.

Fabulous!!

Snowy murder mystery, without the deeply chilling darker side often found in Nordic noir. Interesting characters, fascinating setting and a gripping listen. Well read too! Onto the next one now… can’t wait!
