Summary

From USA Today best-selling author Emily McIntire comes the fourth and final interconnected standalone in the Sugarlake series.

Lily Adams ran away and never looked back. She got herself clean and lives a sober life, working hard to give her son a good home in a place where they’ll be safe.

It’s been years since she left Sugarlake, and the last thing she’d expect is her brother sending someone to find her.

Mason Wells is the best private investigator in Tennessee. Tasked with the mission of hunting down Lily Adams, he knows he’s the perfect man for the job. At least he thought he was, until he actually finds her.

Immediately, Mason feels a pull. He needs to know the perky, dark-haired woman and the son she loves more than the world.

Before he can stop himself, he’s inserted himself into their lives, fake name and all, and even though he tells himself it’s temporary, every day he spends with Lily, the weight of his secrets push down on him more.

When Mason’s past catches up to him, putting Lily and her son’s life in danger, he knows he has to do something major to keep them safe.

Even if it means breaking both their hearts and losing them for good.

*Beneath the Surface is the fourth interconnected stand-alone in The Sugarlake series. It contains mature and graphic content. Listener discretion is advised. Full list of TW can be found on author's website.*

An Emotional Whirlwind of a Story

Beneath the Surface is not your average romance. It is not sunshine and rainbows but it is real and raw. Lilly has been through a variety of traumatic experiences but she has come out on the other side, and she is doing her best to provide for herself and her son. She left Sugarlake, TN a long time ago but the scars still haunt her.

Mason has his own demons he has long since tried to bury. He now spends his time never in one place, traveling for work.

I loved how Mason was wtih Lilly and with her son Chase. While they both entered their friendship/relationship cautiously and with reservation, they were so very compatible and good for each other. I liked that Mason was able to let Lilly continue to have her independence while also supporting her and helping her to not feel so alone.

This story took me through a whirlwind of emotions. There was so much history for both Mason and Lilly that needed to be addressed and dealt with before they could truly move forward and be good for each other. I loved that Mason was willing to tackle his demons head on when push came to shove, taking back some power. There was a lot of love, family, support and an overarching theme of forgiveness which helped to wrap up this story on a positive note.

The audiobook was truly fantastic. Blake Lockheart and Cecily Foster were really wonderful to listen to and brought forth all the emotions warranted for this story. I would highly recommend both and look forward to listening to more of their work in the future as well as reading more from this author in the future. #PinkFlamingoProductions #TheFlock

Fantastic Story & Narration🎧 Riveting & Intense!

Emily McIntire continues to wow me with another amazing romance novel set in her “Sugarlake” series, a series of interconnected standalone novels. Each book features different lead characters and can be enjoyed in any order, but I think it is best to read or listen to the first book, “Beneath the Stars”, before this one. The lead character, Lily, was a secondary/support character in that book, Chase, her brother, and Alina, her best friend’s story. While the story includes everything you need to know in the descriptive details, knowing their back story is beneficial and adds more depth to this multi-layers story. Lily was not the troubled Adams kid, that was her brother so no one noticed when she went off the deep end before disappearing without a trace, she has been missing for several years and Chase never gave up on her, even hired a private investigator to find her. That private investigator, Mason, found her but he was so entranced by her he wanted to find out more about her and whether she wanted to be found, he wanted to make sure Chase had good intentions and that he was not the reason she left Sugarlake. I loved the mystery behind Chase and who he was, and then who he turned out to be. These two characters are opposites and grew up in circumstances that were quite different, yet neither one’s circumstances were good and it left them broken in their own way. I admired Lily’s strength and determination to pick herself up and better herself if not for her, but for Chase. I also admired Mason for his cunningness and ability to get what he wanted, not just revenge, but to see justice served. This wonderfully plotted story captivates your attention and tugs on your heartstrings the entire time, there is plenty of drama, angst, heartfelt emotions, some heart-rending and gut-wrenching moments, and a romance to be remembered, not your typical romance but one just as special. Emily McIntire, thank you for another amazing story and emotional rollercoaster ride. It was great to catch up with the characters from the previous books, too.

🎧📚🎧 And for the fabulous narration, Emily McIntire cast the perfect narrators to bring her characters and story to life. Blake Lockheart and Cecily Foster are superbly talented narrators and versatile voice artists. They had a complete understanding of the characters they portrayed, gave each a voice that fit their character’s persona to a tee, sounding believable and just as I pictured the characters to sound. Blake Lockheart played Mason’s role with perfection, grasped his gruffness and alpha-tude, Cecily Foster’s Lily was spot on, both grasped all sides of their character’s personality and were great performing the roles of all the secondary characters too. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the character’s emotions and projected them into their performance and had you feeling every single one. These entertaining storytellers are a pleasure to listen to and their narration enhances an already amazing story to another level. Thank you for another exceptional listen.

Lily and Mason!

From a young age Lily has been hiding a secret and pretending that she is find when the truth is very different. This secret led to some dangerous choices however finding out she was pregnant changed everything and since then her life is focused on her son Chase who is three years old. When a stranger comes into her life when she needs someone the most she is cautious but he breaks through her walls until it all comes crashing down and realizes it was nothing but a lie.

Mason has his own past that he is running from and although he knows that he should stay away from Lily he is drawn to her and her son like a magnet. He is trying to extricate himself from the situation with the least pain possible until that decision is taken from his hands. Now he must leave Lily and Chase to protect them and hope that if he can deal with his past that they will forgive him and let him back into their lives.

Both Lily and Mason take us on an emotional journey as both of their devastating pasts come back with a vengeance. This is a story about love, family and forgiveness towards other as well as yourself. The narrators were the perfect choice for the characters as they brought out all the turmoil that both characters were feeling as well as their strength as they try to find their way back to each other. 🎧 Audiobook Obsession

Breathtaking!

I love the Sugarlake Series; each instalment is beautifully written, well-plotted, and riveting. Beneath the Surface, the fourth book in the series is no exception. Mason and Lily's story is stunning, emotionally charged, intense, raw, passionate, dark, and utterly captivating. It was the perfect package! Emily McIntire's character development is sophisticated; the complexity, imperfection and flaws made Mason and Lily even more relatable. Based on the previous instalments, I had doubts about Lily; I could sense deep-rooted anger in her. After getting to know her more, I can see she was misunderstood. There is so much more to her than a past paved with mistakes and scars. Mason has flaws and a past too, but he is the ideal man for Lily; simply put, he is her second chance. Aside from the scorching passion and steam, their journey is about healing, new opportunities, growth, friendship, family and love. Beneath the Surface is my favourite book in the series; I was thoroughly enthralled.

The narration is stellar! Blake Lockheart and Cecily Foster are genuinely talented voice artists. They both did an exceptional job connecting the audience to the characters. Beneath the Surface is a must-listen, brilliantly written with outstanding narration. I'm 100% recommending this audiobook!

Amazing series!

Beneath the Surface Sugarlake series book 4 by Emily McIntire
Narration by Blake Lockheart and Cecily Foster

Wow this Beneath the series sure looks at depth what is beneath all of our experiences and emotions.

Lily has a harsh past that hasn’t been easy on her. She may have turned herself off in the past to survive but having baby Chase is her whole world. She has no one or so she believes. Alex (Mason) enters her life as a stranger but with his tenacity they become so much more. Yet there’s a huge secret he doesn’t share with her. Just when he feels like it’s time to come clean about his past it comes knocking on his door forcing his hand.

When Lily ends up back in Sugarlake it had my heart in my throat that these friends and family have such love and caring for one another. There acceptance of Lily’s return to there gold was heartwarming.

Mason’s family was shocking and deceitful. No wonder he tried fleeing them.

I wanted to wrap Lily in my arms but Chase and Mason were both amazing at looking after her. And my heart healed hearing them loving her.

Audiobooks are the best. They are like listening to a movie while doing other things. Adulting, y’all know what I’m talking about. Blake Lockheart and Cecily Foster were amazing in this one. The series is heartfelt and brings all the emotions and passion with it. Make sure you grab all of them!

So much anticipation!

I loved this series. This book was so well written and I got lost in the characters and the story. Everything about the book held my interest and would not let me put it down. This book was everything. It was a great wrap up, but I will miss the characters and will probably reposted soon.

Hidden Identity Romance

Beneath the Surface by Emily McIntire is a hidden identity romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Blake Lockheart and Cecily Foster. This is the fourth book in the Sugarlake series and can be read as a standalone. However, the stories are interconnected so I would highly recommend reading them in order.

I love Emily's books. She does an amazing job pulling me into the story. I loved the relationship that bloomed between Lily and Mason. I really enjoyed getting both of their points of view throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.

Blake and Cecily did an amazing job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.

What a story! Mason & Lily!

This is an amazing series. Each book as good as the last. I was looking forward to hearing Lily's story. We had glimpses of her in previous books, but never really knew the story behind her disappearance. Now we are treated to an emotional journey, packed with secrets, attraction, fear and love. Lily is hiding. From what? Well, that you have to listen to find out! But it's been years and her brother, Chase is giving it a final shot to find her. Hiring Mason, the PI with a fantastic reputation is giving him his last hope. Mason does find her, but his attraction to the woman is keeping him from calling his client. As these two get closer though, Mason's secrets and past come to haunt him. What will become of these two? Emily McIntire had me pulled into their story, wanting to know exactly how it was all going to play out. It's unpredictable, exciting and full of love. We do get back to Sugar Lake, see all of our friends, feel that sense of family and community. It's the best kind of listen. This is should be a one click for all.

Blake Lockheart and Cecily Foster are our storytellers and what a story they tell us! Lockheart is the broody, strong and passionate Mason/Alex. He brings out sides of this man, from child to adult and gives us every feeling. Foster is new to me, and I loved her voice! Perfectly suited for Lily, she gives her that hint of constant desperation, longing for permanence and true love. I enjoyed this team and will be watching for more from them.
