Summary
The time has come for Leman Russ, primarch of the Space Wolves, to fulfil his vow and attempt to stop Warmaster Horus before he breaks through to the Segmentum Solar.
In the face of opposition from three of his brother primarchs, Russ withdraws the Space Wolves legion from Terra and makes all haste for Horus’ position. Reports from Malcador the Sigillite’s agents suggest that Horus is utterly changed and infused with a diabolical power so great that no man can stand against him. A warrior of Fenris would never willingly abandon his oaths, but with Horus beyond the touch of mortal blades, the Lord of Winter and War may have doomed himself for the sake of honour....

Fantastic installment
Another excellent addition as the series heads towards the siege of Terra as always the narrator gives an extra edge to the story.

Not one of the series' best imho
Part of me feels for Guy Haley here; this is a stupid plot to begin with. It just makes no sense, and makes the Space Wolves, and more specifically Russ, look pretty dumb.
It's just a bit too cartoon'y and silly for me. Horus is badly written, a lot of the story just doesn't really make a whole lot of sense within the context of the rest of the series and surrounding events.
It does have its moments and there is a lot of screentime of some big characters.
This one's a solid 6.5/10 for me.

The Wolf King walks the path of Destiny
Wolfsbane is definitely one of the best Horus Heresy novels that I have had the pleasure of listening to. It contains all of the elements that have come to define the series for me - fast pace, large-scale combat, insights into the character and background of a Primarch and the culture of his Legion, etc. The Space Wolves were never my favourite among the Astartes, but this novel has done a great deal to win me over. Leman Russ is a compelling and complicated character - pagan king, son of the Emperor, brother to Horus, slave to fate. An executioner destined to fail. A man who has a price to pay. The biggest surprise in the book, however, was the part dedicated to a young Belisarius Cawl. There was something about the young Cawl that really resonated with me and I am very much looking forward to seeing more from him.

Good but strategically flawed
Another excellent addition to the Horus Heresy. Well performed and written, with nods to Cawl’s younger years an entertaining distraction.
However, as others have said, Russ’ motivations for his action suffer from Deus Ex Machina and the need to have him gone. Guy Haley does brilliantly however to create an engaging story and list of characters. Well worth your time.
Also worth reading in order to be able to laugh at and Space Wolf fan that tells you Russ beat Horus in this book.

Russ is a lovable idiot.
i liked it but the main flaw was that it sought to explain the rational of a stupid decision...

The story is great. Russ is an amazing character and this book gives a deeper look into Russ, Horus and their relationship with the Emperor. I really enjoyed it and would suggest it for any Space Wolf fan.

fantastic, but maybe not worth the price. Russ's voice was the best iteration of the character I've heard yet.

WARHAMMER
Warhammer Demigids fight for the fate of the universe. Need I say more?! also this was almost an audio drama with the different voices and inflections. it was not a robot but a flesh and blood reader that seemed devoted to the characters as much as you or I.

A good listen, but...
All of the Norse mythology parallels were the best part. The call backs to other books and continuity were on point. Keeble crushes the performance as always as he is the GOAT.
The progression of the timeline itself feels like very little was accomplished. Without spoiling anything it just kinda felt like a waste on the Vilka Fenrika's part.
Cawl doing Cawl things was very cool, but felt like a completely separate unlinked tale within the story. It was linked up in the end mildly but still had very little impact with the overall saga.
3.5 stars.

Pretty good book.
Good story except reused Norse mythology. Using Russ to representing Trials of Thor was lazy writing.

Made me like Space Wolves
I didn’t really find the 6th legion that interesting before, Viking space marines? Meh. But this book finally won me over to Russ and his sons. I found the descriptions of Fenris especially interesting, and seeing Cawl was a nice surprise.
You really need to have read Spirit of Vengeance first to get the most out of this one, in my opinion. Burning of Prospero wouldn’t hurt either, but this book serves as a follow up to a lot of the plot lines established in Spirit of Vengeance.
