Summary

In 1976, Francis Beaumont spirited 11-year-old Kim Chown and her brother away from their mother to Africa, where he had taken a job as a university lecturer. There, behind a veneer of respectability, he terrorised and brutalised his own child, Kim, sexually and emotionally abusing her several times a day.

Only aged 20 did Kim feel able to escape from him, descending into alcoholism, after her siblings and mother refused to help her seek justice. But after almost ending her own life, Kim fought back. With the support of her husband and adult children, she finally faced him in court and won justice for his shocking crimes.

This is one woman's inspiring true story of overcoming harrowing abuse to build a happy life - against all odds.

A harrowing but gripping read

The most harrowing book I have ever listened to. It’s difficult to take in that anyone could inflict such horrific abuse on anyone, let alone their own child. Kim’s courage is remarkable and I’m so happy she found such a wonderful husband to support her throughout her life. It’s hard to understand how her siblings could shun her but despite their lack of support, I’m so glad she managed to bring her father to justice as well as help other victims come forward too. Amazing lady!

Loved this book

The honesty and the horror. But mostly her bravery! Anyone who can share their story of such torment by her own father is very courageous. others who are going through the same experiences can take solace in the knowledge that you can do something to get out of your situation and there is always someone you can talk to.

Great book

What a book and what an extraordinary woman you are, I feel sick what your dad done to you & cannot believe your siblings are not there for you, I just can’t get my head round that. You must be so proud of your husband and children and they must be so proud of you. You are one strong lady 🥰

Brave lady

Brave lady. Don’t feel bad about anything. You are the victim who still finds love in her heart for her torturer.

Very powerful book

First of all may I thank you Kim for writing this all down they do say writing down bad events in your life can help with the healing process. Secondly I praise you for your courage for a child going through such agony from your father was the worst betrayal I can not imagine.
Hearing the appalling things this monster did was just pure evil and I would hope he dies in prison alone, he really doesn't deserve your sympathy Kim and as for your brother and sisters I can't imagine how they thought it right to stick by him.
Georgian Sutton was very good at narrating as well.
Thank you once again, this story had to be told.

Deeply moving

From the deepest despair to the greatest strength, Kim Chown documents her early life. Her childhood was so tortuous. The person who should be your rock becomes the very person who inflicts the most heinous physical and phycological crimes against you. An ultimate gripping read and will shock you to your core.

Such a brave lady

This Book gripped me from the beginning, such a harrowing story of survival, absolutely heartbreaking what Kim went through, and how brave she was bringing her monster of a father to finally face justice.
