Summary

Dave Smith is having a bad day, week, month, maybe even year. Freshly unemployed, facing eviction, and now he's been transported to a fantasy world. A wish come true for many a geek, if only he hadn't died less than a day after he arrived.

Now trapped in this fantasy realms version of purgatory, he faces the prospect of trying to navigate a new existence as a dungeon. That wouldn't be so bad, except ending dungeons seems to be the path out for many of the other denizens of these Proving Grounds.

To make matters worse, the deities of this place have taken a special interest in complicating his stay, for their own as yet unstated reasons.

On the upside, he has a new body.

Downside, most of the raiders in his region are bearded dudes or ugly and orc like. What's a guy whose life experiences include gaming and working a series of crummy customer service jobs to do. Answer. Work the system, be as obnoxiously obstinate as he can be, and bend every rule like it's made of rubber.

Oh, and whine, just a little bit; well, it is all very unfair.

Fun, fast-paced and gray

This is a truly funny story with nice kinky elements and a different type of harem as he is not the usual "princeso", meaning he is not afraid to get his way with the ladies and to do what he has in general to succeed. It is also a fast-paced story in which you see him grow quickly instead of it taking him several books to just develop a little. The narrators are great and help you visualize the characters and feell more in synch with the books! Always love dual narrators and this pair are as good as it can get! Definitely a great listen if you like this type of book, 100% recommended!

Great dungeon core story

I loved the premise of this book the story started out brilliant and knowing it was harem lit going in I was prepared for it however was a little disappointed that it almost seemed to take over the MC character towards the end. I think this is well worth the time the performance is great and the plot is brilliant. I fell that the harem scenes should be toned in such a way that it doesn’t dominate the MCs mindset.

A breath of fresh air

This was one of those that I just thought it looked good and gave it a try. I must admit I was surprised at how well the story turned out. The author did a wonderful job weaving the plot and building the characters. Masterfully done. He provided the details required for this type of book and even built characters with a sense of humor. Now I eagerly await the next book.
The narrators did a fantastic job of putting life into the characters. They were able to build a world that you could get lost in as if it was all real.
Hands down 5*****!

Glad this series has FINALLY got an Audiobook!

Read this series a while back and the a few months later I fancied listening/rereading the series but found out there was no audiobook. Now thankfully I can do just that. Hopefully the second volume is already in production as this is one of the best series in the genre and sooner the sequel is released, the better.

Lots of setup; last 40% very enjoyable

“The Wolf King’s Lair 1” suffers from poor incorporation of what are a couple of very good plot devices.

First, in the Afterword, the author states a desire to “write my characters in shades of grey”, rather than being a typical hero-type. He goes too far for my taste, as the first sex scene is a rape. Offering a woman a choice between being f*cked or being killed does not elicit consensual sex. In the rest of the book, the MC and his aggressive inner wolf do tend toward violence and taking what they want - not asking, but the MC keeps his inner beast in check better than he did in Chapter 7.

Second, the MC is being actively targeted by “The Lords”; they do not want him to survive and place significant hurdles in his path. Unfortunately, Book 1 suffers from far too much “set up” and explaining what “The Lords” and the “Divine Accords” are before anything actually happens, and even after things begin to happen, several chapters continue to over-explain detailed rules and procedures. I felt like I was being taught the Dewey Decimal System rather than being allowed to enjoy a book. The author acknowledges taking too long before anything happens, and spending too much time on details, but decided to “leave it in” rather than ruthlessly edit. This book is a great example of why editors help authors; sometimes they need to hit the delete key on their hard-worked prose.

Jonathan Waters provided a very good performance, which is good considering that for much of the book he was the only VA. Maeve York did a fantastic job…once she had parts to perform. She first appears in Chapter 7, and then at 58% into the book, she gets another sentence in Chapter 12. She has much larger roles during the last seven chapters when things finally start happening, and that was the part of the book I most enjoyed.

While the MC and his first disciple Jessamyn often have sex, Chapter 14 was really devoted to it! Forty-five minutes of consensual and well-written fun!

My overall impression is that this story flips the “Star Trek” methodology. Star Trek provided interesting stories built around a core group of characters, rather than starting each episode explaining in detail how phasers work, how the transporter works, how di-lithium crystals work, etc. The tech just existed.

I would rate the first 60% of “The Wolf King’s Lair” as 3* with another * subtracted because of the rape scene. The last 40% of the book has the narration at 5*, the storyline at 4.5* (still too many detours into details of forging etc), and the Epilogue is 5* with a great indication of further conflicts and interesting characters in Book 2. Overall, I rate “The Wolf King’s Lair” as 3.5* rounded to 4*

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Receiving a review copy did not influence my rating or my review.

A nice blend of LitRPG, Dungeon Core, and Harem.

Devan Drake writes an intriguing take on a few sub genres happily mashed together and it works quite well! Dungeon core, LitRPG, and harem with some unique twists to make them blend together nicely. The MC is well developed, makes nice gains that aren't OP, the supporting characters are all useful in more ways than one, and the world is a pleasure to be a part of and watch develop. I look forward to book 2 in the series! Audio Version: Jonathan Waters and Maeve York do an excellent job with their characters and the narration of this story.

Hell yeah it's worth it

In the interest of time for the review reader I'll just say yeah, I recommend this series to you. This appears to be a new author, and this is the first work of his that I have picked up. The series currently has four entries with the first three books being available as an omnibus in eBook form. This is the first of the authors books to receive the audio treatment. It is dual narration, and the narration team did a fantastic job. Both narrators are relatively new to me but as this is the third book in which I've enjoyed their performance I can say that they've gone 3 for 3. The hero of the story is summoned by accident and crippled during the process. The cultists then dump him in a cesspit where he dies horribly. Through some God level legalese, he finds himself sentence to an alien version of hell with an asterisk. As a dungeon core he can have a chance at redemption, but there is a twist with the God games which is he's not the first human from his world to find himself in this position and as such the gods are against him. You see the last human from his world created a bit of a ruckus even though he ultimately failed. Side note: something unique with this series is that our hero apparently is a sex dungeon do too the alien gods rooting through our hero’s browser history. Now in regard to my personal preference I do not usually like stories where the main character is a dungeon core, but this one was not only good enough for me to complete the book but good enough for me to want to continue on with the series. Lastly, I'll just say thank you to everybody who had a hand in bringing this book to us the audio listeners.

Surprisingly interesting, surprisingly good!

I've seen this done before, the whole person as a dungeon core trope. This however, seems like a fresh/original take on it (at least for me). The mc is not evil but isn't exactly good either. He is out for his own survival. There is a dungeon v dungeon aspect that I really liked a lot. Also, this is not only a dungeon core story but a base building harem adventure as well. There is actually a bit more to the story line but that would be spoilerish so I'll let you find out for yourself.

The narration quality was top notch and really fit the tone of the book. Kudos to Johnathan Waters and Maeve York for their performance. You two gave this a life of its own and I don't think I could read the book with hearing your voices for each character. That's about the best endorsement I can give for a narration team. Anyway, this is definitely worth a listen and a credit!

have to leave 1 star

this doesn't deserve 1 star but you have to
bull shit story the author must of had a deadline plus the main character is extremely spineless I mean the so called gods or whatever their called is constantly screwing him over and all it takes is for one of them to flirt with him and all anger is gone

great

loved it despite the slow plot progression but this is overlooked easily as one can see that the author is building a base to build upon. not a fan of overpowered Mc or Mary Sue circumstance but overall a good book.

Absolutely phenomenal

I loved this book. The story was great. The afterword made sense to me and was quite informative if not intriguing. If it were not for the females narrator’s lack of enthusiasm during scenes I’d put this in top 5. She did in fact do good with acting.

Well balanced

Entertaining book. It is surprising well balanced. The story was engaging and wasn’t overwhelmed with harem moments. The dungeon core elements felt unique but it definitely felt like a dungeon core novel. There were some weird rules that the dungeon had to adhere to for the sake of trying to screw over the protagonist. I usually like more parity and succeeding under those circumstances. The MC has plenty of advantage so it kind of balances out in the end. I really enjoyed the dual narration. It definitely increased the value of the book.

Outstandingly awesome!

Wow, what a great book and a great start to a new series! I can’t wait to read the new one. This was the first book I had read by Devan Drake but I’m a fan of his work now.
