Summary

The party was supposed to be the highlight of the summer. If only I’d known that night would destroy our lives....

All the neighbours were laughing, drinking out of plastic glasses and getting along. I almost felt happy. Almost forgot about the terrible argument earlier and the sinister messages I’d been receiving from a strange address all week, threatening to expose the lies behind my perfect life.

As we finished with the red and gold fireworks and welcomed everyone back to our house, I believed that everything would be okay.

But I didn’t know who I was inviting in.

I never could have imagined what would happen here, in our home, after I’d gone up to bed.

Everyone saw something different.

It’s my daughter’s word against the story the boy from down the road is telling. But how can I find out what really happened that night without everyone finding out the truth about me?

An absolutely gripping story of the secrets you would do anything to keep hidden, with a twist you just won’t see coming. Perfect for fans of Gone Girl, Big Little Lies and The Girl on the Train.

Unremarkable, terrible narrator

I have no idea how I managed to stick this book out. It was far too long, part 1 was mostly unnecessary. The ending was very poor, everything about the storyline was unremarkable.
The narrator(s) accents were shockingly bad, the one used for the mixed race London teenager made me cringe! I can’t decide if it was almost racist tbh.
Disappointed, and a waste of a credit.

Good listen

I liked the story, however I was waiting for a good twist and it didn't happen. The teenage boy voice was very annoying. I wouldn't put this book at the top of my list but not regretting listening to it all the way through either.

Hated the narration

The narration of the mix-race and indian(?) characters was horrific, like racist caricatures, and really irritating to hear.

Terrible narration

This book is ruined by the narrator putting on a stupid posh voice for all of the male characters. Sounds like something out of a 1970’s BBC ‘comedy’. Takes the absolute mick considering it’s meant to be a serious storyline.

The character of Ruby is stupid and immature and hers is the best of a bad bunch. I couldn’t finish it, and I NEVER give up on books. This one was neither gripping or a ‘page turner’. A waste of a credit. If I could give zero stars, I would.

Struggled with this

Hard work , I found it very slow and long winded , the story was unremarkable and I really struggled to finish it
The only reason I did was because I was driving and hadn’t gotten anything else downloaded the second half was a bit better but all in all not worth the read
Narrators mostly good Apart from the voice of the whiney“posh” lady … see I’ve forgotten her name already that’s how memorable a story it was
Definitely wouldn’t recommend
I don’t know what genre it actually fits into it’s not thriller mystery or romance is not chic lit either
So I’d give this muss and don’t waste your credits
I would send it back but audible have told me I can’t do that even though I’ve only ever sent a handful back in years of being a member .
