Summary

Book one of the End Times.

As the forces of Chaos threaten to drown the world in madness, Mannfred von Carstein and Arkhan the Black put aside their difference and plot to resurrect their dark master: Nagash.

The original bad guy of the Warhammer World returns for the End Times, ready to destroy the land of the living and begin a new age of undeath. If you like Warhammer, this is a must-have - nothing that has ever happened within the Old World or without has been more pivotal to the future of the world.

The story:

The End Times are coming. As the forces of Chaos threaten to drown the world in madness, Mannfred von Carstein and Arkhan the Black put aside their difference and plot to resurrect the one being with the power to stand against the servants of the Ruinous Powers and restore order to the world - the Great Necromancer himself. As they set about gathering artefacts to use in their dark ritual, armies converge on Sylvania, intent on stopping them. But Arkhan and Mannfred are determined to complete their task. No matter the cost, Nagash must rise again.

Written by Josh Reynold. Narrated by Andrew James Spooner.

Good yet quite not there

Good story and performance. A bit less interesting than other books of the old world series. The story involves a lot of famous characters yet their personalities drives and goals seem to be lacking some depth.

A somewhat rushed but deeply satisfying listen

As a fan of the Vampire Counts and Mannfred von Carstein in particular, for me this book was a real treat. Loved the epic sweep, the haunted atmosphere, the displays of magical prowess. Mannfred is a great character and I also found myself really liking Arkhan the Black. Josh Reynolds' narrative is well structured and something about the way he describes magic and battles in the Warhammer world just works. The narration by Andrew Spooner is also top notch! My only complaint is that the book was too short and some important events were only mentioned instead of being properly presented in the story. Personally, I would have preferred it if the book was longer and the author took more time to expand some existing scenes and to add a few additional new ones, but that is just me.

Brilliant

I really enjoyed this from start to finish. So engaging and filled in the gaps for the end times for me.

wonderfull book and voice actor

Loved this book so much, i've only listened to the warhammer novels so far and this one is by far my favorite. All characters you know from the game and lore is mentioned in some way or another and it was a wonderfull experience. The voice actor was remarkable and threw me in to the world of warhammer right from the begining to the end.

One of the best Warhammer fantasy novels

I first read this in a rush on release while having to cross reference all the name drops that were unfamiliar to me. Be warned, Josh Reynolds fills the book with Easter eggs that I doubt anyone got all of the first time. But the beauty of it is that characters that were simply named pieces of art in an army book with no further background feel just as organic and tied to the world and it's history as those who had legitimately been around for decades at this point.

The narrator was superb. No struggling with names and a suitable level of gravitas in a story that dips into horror quite frequently.

While I tentatively hope that they carry on to do the rest of the series in audiobook form, the quality of the writing never really matched this first entry (book 5 came closest).

Fun and moving

The story is but a part of the Nagash story of the end-time but it has everything to keep you entertained.

Incredible story

Ever since my pre teens, I have loved Warhammer, but never read the stories. I loved The Return of Nagash and I can not wait for The Fall of Altdorf to be addad to audible.

Such a shame End Times got so much hate

Jist as epic as you would want for the start of End Times. Its got loads of named characters and a good back and forth with Manfred and Arkhan. Sets up the end of the world and plays into the battles in the narrative books
