Summary

Post-apocalyptic fiction by Sean Liscom

Jason Sterling had a simple life by all accounts. He had worked the same job his entire adult life, he had never married, and he had no children. He was used to doing things on his own. His comfortable life was shaken to the core the day he learned of his fathers death. It was a mysterious meeting that set life-altering events in motion, and the allure of a new life was too great to walk away from. When an electromagnetic pulse brings the modern world to its knees, Jason's choice proves to be the right one.

Embarrassing

This should not have been classified as post-apocalyptic or survivor fiction. And it is certainly not an action novel. Maybe a teen angst love story? It reads like some 13 year old's boy's fantasy of how to prepare for have the SHTF (stockpile half a million rounds of every kind of ammo, an umpteen thousand MRE's, 500 cows (!), bd fatigues, and etc, etc.).. Most of the book follows a middle-aged man who suddenly is transformed into an expert on all things survival and self-defense, who meets the perfect female superhero counterpart. But, instead of action, the author lists supplies and weapons in storage that will supposedly (but NOT) keep them alive and safe for years to come (IF anything ever happens in this slow moving book!). There is nothing realistic in this author's fantasy of a refuge compound. As a more interesting alternative try reading the army supply manual, Military Standard Requisitioning and Issue Procedures (MILSTRIP), which describes classes of supply available to units.

Decent until the politics.

It would be nice for there to be a story that just focused on the prepping without making it political. My views are varied and I have friends and family on both ends of the spectrum. However, when you stereotype liberals as drugged up hippies and refer to liberalism as a mental disorder, it creates an unnecessary division between groups of people.

Just focus on the subject matter and try to put emphasis on different groups of people working together instead of creating more divisiveness. I love my gun-toting, liberal, prepper folks just as much as I love my unprepared, anti-firearm, conservative people.

The story was ok, I made it all the way through and didn't feel like I had totally wasted a credit, so that's something.

This book is about 3 hours too long

Let me start by saying that I liked this book, I found it entertaining and the narrator did a pretty good job. However, there is a lot of extra drama here that subtracts from the storyline.
This novel does follow the same old, same old pattern in this type of book. The strong leading character that has a huge moral stance. Does not understand his role at the beginning but turns into this warrior General.
The female is always a militant super warrior, better than her counter part, always beautiful, always a fitness freak, the supporting characters have all the same traits and, of course, the villain...same.
I did enjoy most of this book, there were some parts that had me turning it off but I came back to it so I could finish it.
I think the abridged version would have been a better choice but I do not get abridged books.

Eighth grade level entertainment

Shallow right wing characters who have created a survival pod/ranch with no books, no music no diversity, Just lots of guns and one unattached woman for the main character. Their 20member group acts inbred already, just wait a few years.

I have 560+ Audible Books...

"The Ranch" is one of the best audible books I have purchased. Your storyline is smooth, the descriptive narrative is spot on the money. And the story is very unique. Your reader is just as good as Kevin Pierce, one of the top readers on Audible. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Great book

I liked odd Billy Todd a little better. But this has plenty of action and as much thought out into the story

Silly

It is one thing to be prepared. It is another to have pre-positioned military trucks full of .50 caliber machine guns, rocket launchers, Claymore mines, explosives, as well as crates of gold and silver.

If you've ever read Swiss Family Robinson and wondered how one island could have such massive natural bounty (from all over the world), you'll get the feel of this book.

It is ridiculous. Decently written, but so silly. It is an apocalypse video game on cheat mode. Sad, really. That, coupled with the mandatory unbeatable tactical goddess trope, makes this book feel like it was written by a teen.

For his next book I'd suggest a life raft story, only the life raft is an entire cruise ship, that is nuclear powered with no fewer than three back-up reactors. Of course it is equipped with torpedoes.

good book, make you think

good story, wish the author would have left out the extreme vulgar language. The first half of the book was great then for some reason the F Bombs came out. The story was good and didn't need to go it that direction.
