Summary

There’s the obvious story. And then there’s the truth.

Alex lives a comfortable life with his wife Beth in the leafy suburb of Silver Vale. Fine, so he’s not the most outgoing guy on the street, he prefers to keep himself to himself, but he’s a good husband and an easy-going neighbour.

That’s until Beth announces the creation of a nature trail on a local site that’s been disused for decades and suddenly Alex is a changed man. Now he’s always watching. Questioning. Struggling to hide his dread...

As the landscapers get to work, a secret threatens to surface from years ago, back in Alex’s twenties when he got entangled with a seductive young woman called Marina, who threw both their lives into turmoil.

And who sparked a police hunt for a murder suspect that was never quite what it seemed.

And it still isn’t.

Don’t get the hype

Found the narrator wooden, not a good choice for me and find many male narrators make female characters so pathetic sounding.
Good amount of twists, some a bit predictable and OTT, a few eye roll moments, overall just a bit lacklustre. I only listened to it in the car and like other reviewers zoned out for the last couple of chapters.
Will try another from this author based on reviews and hope for better listening next time. This one just wasn’t for me.

Stupid and depressing

This book will keep you guessing - mainly about whether it's worth continuing. Plot twists are at the expense of all else. It ends on a surprising note that somehow manages to be both stupid and depressing. And getting there feels like being stuck in an interminable, slow-moving traffic jam (it's about 4 hours too long). The narrator does a decent job but has a habit of making all female characters unsympathetic by lending them an irritatingly whiny voice. 10 hours I'll never get back.

There is only one suspect….or is there?

Very clever, twisty story. This held my interest and I was completely surprised by the way it ended! Excellent narration.

Disappointing yet a good story

Kept me guessing. Not an obvious story but some twists were obvious to see. I wasn't surprised by the end, just disappointed.

Loved it

Lots of twists and turns. But the narrator spoke too quickly although I enjoyed his different voices for the characters
