Summary

The funny, heartbreaking and uplifting new novel from the best-selling author of The Flatshare

Three women. Three dates. One missing man....

8.52. Siobhan's been looking forward to her breakfast date with Joseph. She was surprised when he suggested it - she normally sees him late at night in her hotel room. Breakfast with Joseph on Valentine's Day surely means something...so where is he?

14.43. Miranda's hoping that a Valentine's Day lunch with Carter will be the perfect way to celebrate her new job. It's a fresh start and a sign that her grown-up life is finally falling into place: she's been dating Carter for five months now, and things are getting serious. But why hasn't he shown up?

18.30. Joseph Carter agreed to be Jane's fake boyfriend at a colleague's engagement party. They've not known each other long, but their friendship is fast becoming the brightest part of her new life in Winchester. Joseph promised to save Jane tonight. But he's not here....

Meet Joseph Carter. That is, if you can find him.

The No-Show is the brilliantly funny, heartbreaking and joyful new novel from Beth O'Leary about dating, and waiting, and the ways love can find us. An utterly extraordinary tearjerker of a book, this is O'Leary's most ambitious novel yet.

This audiobook includes an exclusive interview between Beth O'Leary and Evanna Lynch.

Lovely book, daft listener

Ok bear with me. I’ve read books by Beth O Leary before and enjoyed them so I have no idea why I got totally the wrong end of the stick with this one. It’s a great story about three women and the significant man in their lives. His name is Joseph Carter, and I decided the twist was that he was actually Jesus Christ. After all, Jesus’ father was called Joseph, a carpenter. Joseph’s mother is also called Mary, and there is a suspiciously angelic character called Aggie (an angel! Obviously!). And remember that phrase ‘Jesus, Mary and Joseph’ ??
Spoiler alert. It’s not that. (If you’re after that sort of thing, I recommend Sally Vickers).
In fact though, now I’ve written all this, I have convinced myself it’s a smart, modern day allegory and I was right all along.
Anyway for non- weirdos, it’s a great book, and the performances are fab. 😁

Story is underdeveloped and the narration is poor

I initially found the story quite dull and slow to be honest and only carried on listening because I enjoyed the author’s previous books. I think it improves but the story and some of the characters are not developed enough. And the repeated descriptors of Joseph by the different leads gets really boring and unbelievable. Based on how the story plays out and connects all the women how is this character so dull.

The narration really doesn’t help either - Siobhan’s narration isn’t too bad but, overall it’s so slow I had to listen at 1.2x just to get through it and lacks emotion / performance. I heard in the author interview at the end that this is a Rom-com and honestly was shocked, if there were any jokes they died in delivery.

Finally when listening you could hear the narrators swallowing while reading, it’s distracting and lazy editing really lets the author down (I found the same issue on The Switch’ by the same author). I got this on pre-order but, wouldn’t recommend it.

The swallowing .....

Clever but overly drawn out. Let down by the narration - the swallowing made it almost unbearable to listen to Jane's story in particular.

Don’t bother

Characters were very irritating, not much of a story and nonsensical! Usually like Beth O’Leary books but this was awful

Not quite what I was expecting

Billed as a rom-com but it really isn’t. Heavier content than Beth O’Leary’s other novels, there’s a lot of sadness and characters with a more complex psychology than might be expected from this genre. Siobhan’s narrator was unconvincing in comparison with the others. I do love this author but I didn’t love this.

LOVED IT

I thought this story was very creative, original and up to the minute in it's contemporary style and themes. Particularly, I enjoyed the exploration of how easily we assess people wrongly by taking at face value the masks we all wear, image or hearsay. People are so complex and multi-faceted and often surprise us in good and bad ways even when we think we know them. The conclusion was totally unpredictable and turned around in a wonderful way with some sad but ultimately uplifting conclusions.

I thought all the narrators were good but, for me, Miranda was was exceptional. Jane's narrator conveyed Jane's sensitive nature spectacularly and is super talented at accents.

Thanks for an engaging read xox

Beth does it again. Probably the best book so far at that. Extremely well written, fabulous narration.

Not my fave

I always look forward to Beth O’Leary’s books but this wasn’t my favourite. Felt quite different to her other books; I didn’t feel invested in any of the romances or any of the characters really which was a shame. I ended up not really caring what happened in the end

Great book, the narrating was a little confusing

This review is more about the audiobook version than the plot itself

I love this book but i liked more reading it than listening to it even though the voiceacting is good, i was really interested on the multiple narrations and it makes sense that its devided by POVs more than by characters itself but for Joseph Carter i think they could have his narrator throughout the book for example, as he literally only narrrates 1 chapter and its the last one so its kinda random.

Also i tend to listen to audiobooks at like 1.3 or something as i mostly find the reading too slow but i actually didnt need to do it for Evanna Lynch as she reads in a good pace for me at the normal speed but as i felt like every narrator had different reading paces i had to change the speed of the audio every chapter kinda as if i kept it the same throughout it sounded either too slow or too fast in some of the chapters.

This is just because of my personal preferences and its a good audiobook and i love the plot itself but ya i think for first reading the book itself is better than audio as some features can break the experience (at least for me) but its good for rereaaading as this book should be read more than once

P:S.: I loved the interview at the end

A satisfying roller coaster of emotions

I think I ran the gamut of emotions. Not in any order, I was happy, sad, touched, thrilled, disappointed, curious, puzzled and I laughed out loud in public. This story just swept me away and I loved every minute. A word of warning, don't start it in the evening because you won't be able to leave it long enough to get some sleep. Loved the plot twist... read and find out. A very satisfying read.
