Summary
From Wall Street Journal best-selling author L.J. Shen comes a brand-new romantic mafia stand-alone about the thin line between love and obsession.
“Maybe we were never meant for each other. But that night at the carnival, when you showed me who you were, I figured out who I wanted to be.”
The most important thing I’d ever read was scribbled on the door of a portable restroom, engraved into plastic at a carnival on the outskirts of Boston.
Lust lingers, love stays.
Lust is impatient, love waits.
Lust burns, love warms.
Lust destroys, but love? Love kills.
Maybe it was always my destiny to fall in love with a monster.
When other kids stayed awake at night fearing the pointy-toothed beast hiding in their closet, I longed to see mine.
I wanted to feed it, domesticate it, understand it.
Sam and I were only allowed to love each other in the dark.
Once our story unfolded, and the truth came to light, I was the one to cut the cord.
My name is Aisling Fitzpatrick, and I have a confession to make.
Sam Brennan is not the only monster in this story.

different kinda story...
Took a while for me to get into this one....I persevered and enjoyed it in the end, but took a while. Still a good listen. Didn't like the female teller when she did the voice of Sam, but other than that it was fine.

Disappointed
I usually love these books, and I really enjoyed the Boston belle series. However, I found this story underwhelming and hard to keep motivated to read. The accents were not great. The story was tired. I found myself unable to finish, and putting it down for ages. Such a shame 😭

Deliciously Dark!
L.J. Shen is my new favourite author, this dark romance will burn fast and keep you hanging on every word. Super hot with a strong female lead, character development for literally everyone and new twists/themes that got me thinking hard about the circle of life. A Must Read!

Sam & Aisling 4 life
my favourite out of the Boston Belle series. Aisling is an unexpectedly flawed intricate character. the layers to these characters are so refreshing
spice level 🌶 🌶 🌶 🌶/5

I think I liked this one best.
I really enjoyed this book. Sam was really mean but you got to understand the reasons as the story progressed.
The only thing that spoiled it was the the female narrators male voice. Off putting at times.

not as good as others
I enjoyed the others in this series, but really didn't like this story as much. Sam was just a bit too extreme for me.

Great story
Fantastic story I loved it right from the beginning. How the “the monster “ ever thought he could lick his heart away and feel nothing for anyone is amazing , but loved how Ash managed to break down his walls.

Life changer
This book completely changed my life..
You want to be your own monster after reading this!
It’s romantic, sexy, thrilling and just damn right amazing.
The storyline is wonderfully written from the romance to the families (characters) and interconnections between LJShens other books …
If you have a book funk even as a one off read this will truly get you hooked !!!

Surprisingly good
Surprisingly good. After Cillian's very dark story, this was a very good surprise. I enjoyed these characters most so far. Good plost twist too, just in the right moments.
Perfomance is great, except the representation of the male characters by the female narrator, since he does not speak like that? seems to be a common thing in these series.

Least Fav...
I don't think I need to say more about SP & JM narration. If you are new to either.. well.. just go in blind. You won't regret it.
As for the book.. LJS doesn't always hit the mark for me. I usually can't stand when she writes the heroine as a door mat.. and Ash was a door mat. No matter how vile Sam was, she buckled when he was near her. The other part to my dislike of this book.. 7 hrs into the listen and there is no connection btwn Ash and Sam. He is still a distasteful character. I am all for drawn out connections but give me something other than lust to hold to on this ride. This listen just didn't do it for me. Even with stellar narration, there was nothing intriguing about the story that hooked me.
Not worth a credit, just wait until it is on sale....

Female narrator’s voice for Sam ruined it for me
I loved this story, and loved both narrators. However, when the female narrator did Sam’s voice I would cringe bc she gave him a Brooklyn accent. I gave up and read the book. Great story though!

not her best book
Usually I finish LJ Shen's books in one sitting but I struggled with this one. The female lead was weak and kept being manipulated by her parents. The male lead didn't have any redeeming qualities. As a non-smoker, the fact he is a chain smoker makes me think his kisses taste like an ashtray. He hates women. Now, I love a bad boy. Vicious and Villain were great. But they were into their women in a way that Sam Brennan didn't appear to be. He lusted for Ashlyn, but it wasn't made clear that it went beyond that until the end of the book. Of course I will continue to buy LJ's books. There are only two of her books I rated lower than 4 stars. This is one of them. The voice of Ashlyn's governess in her head, like her conscience was irritating, to top it off.

The female narrator 🤦🏻♀️
I would have given it 5 stars, but the female narrator created a lead character that needed to be slapped a few times to be likable.

I Fell in Love with The Monster!
L.J. Shen has a way of sucking you into her books, allowing you to get completely lost in her stories and leaving you never wanting to return to reality! Shen’s world-building is second to none, her writing style is brilliant and her characters are complex and multi-layered. Sam Brennon is The Monster but he’s so much more and only one woman can truly reach him and make his heart beat again. Aisling’s character surprised me in a good way...there were a couple times I wanted to scream at her and say, “no, don’t do that!” but overall she was strong, determined and Brennon’s perfect match. When you have to wait for something, fight for it, it’s all the sweeter in the end. I loved this rocky but entertaining ride to their HEA and can’t wait for the next installment in the series. Narration is the best you’ll find...Jacob Morgan...sigh...and Savannah is wonderful too! 5 UTTERLY AMAZING STARS ALL-AROUND! Buy it, you won’t regret it!!!!!

Brennan's Book Let Down
I was really excited for Sam's book but this was a let down. the story dragged and the plot was shaky. The female narrator did not do justice to the characters either. I expected more backbone from the heroine, emotional growth from the hero and more spice from the sex scenes.

Enjoyed it very much!!!
I really enjoyed this book and the story in general . I only have to say that when the female narrator did the voice of Sam unfortunately it just didn't sound right, especially because when the male narrator did his part it sounded natural of course but when she did it it sounded forced, like he was choking. I wish they wouldn't narrate this way and there would be no comparison.

Another fantastic story!!
First of all I Loved the narrators they are my favorite and them combined was awesome. They brought the story to life. The author yet again made a captivating story. The monster and nix together was kismet, that they were bound for each other since they first met. It is a perfect tale. Yes there are lots of rejection from his part but she never gave up because she loved him but like always men are too easily scared for love. Anyways, before I purchased this some reviews had second guessing but I love Shen and plus I wanted to know more about Sam’s story since the beginning so the negative reviews out there in regards to this are just negative and shouldn’t be taken into consideration. I can honestly recommend this and you won’t be disappointed.

Love
I had been anticipating this story ever since reading "The Villian" and also finishing "Sparrow." Sam is by far my favorite of the characters so far and I really loved how Troy and Sparrow appeared semi-frequently in the story. Something I really liked about this book was it wasn't just about the relationship between him and Aisling. It was also about how each interacted with their families and how they grew with them. I would argue it almost takes up as much time as their romantic relationship.
While I wouldn't say it's required to read Sparrow before this, it will certainly give you a lot of context for his mother, Catalina, and Troy/Sparrow. I think it definitely helps you get more into Sam's state of mind and what he experienced growing up to make him the person he is. In particular, the person Troy is impacted Sam a lot.
Out of the other three books in this series, I feel like this one is the rawest, darkest, and more believable. Would highly recommend it.
