Summary

From Wall Street Journal best-selling author L.J. Shen comes a romantic comedy that will make you fall in love...or at least stumble your way to it, laughing.

I would say Dr. Cruz Costello is my archenemy.

But that would require acknowledging one another, which we haven’t done in more than a decade.

He’s the town’s golden child. The beloved quarterback-turned-physician.

I’m the girl who got knocked up at 16 and now works at a diner.

He is Fairhope royalty.

I get my monarch dose from tabloid gossip.

He’s well-off.

I’m...well, off.

When our siblings get engaged, Cruz’s parents invite both families to a pre-wedding cruise.

Except Cruz and I find ourselves stuck on a different ship from everyone else.

Cue 10 horrible, insufferable days at sea with a man I cannot stand.

(My fault, of course.)

But when the alcohol pours in, the secrets spill out, and I’m left with one question: Can I take another chance on love?

LJ Shen did it again….

Loved this book from beginning to end. As an avid fan of all LJ Shen, this did no disappoint. The romcom angle was a breath of fresh air and demonstrated another side to her writing. Can’t wait for the next!

So depressing

Wow, that was... hard. Depressing. And extremely triggering. Not only MFC's backstory is heartbreaking, this whole book is just a soul-crushing continuation of her downfall. It definitely is not a feel-good book, for all the humiliation and injustice the author puts his female lead through, with very little rehabilitation at the end.
The fact that she had to do the grand gesture is just such bs.
I truly hate Cruz. He openly admitted that sleeping with him will put her dirt on him, which is such a hurtful thing to say. He was constantly pushing her boundaries with no regard for risk on her end. He pushed and manipulated her to get his way constantly (sex stuff). He did nothing significant after seeing her beaten up. Beaten because of him! It's because of him and his inability to resolve his situation with Gabriella, that she ends up with charges and bruised. Meanwhile, he owned up to nothing. Not once did he stand up in her defense when it would cost him his precious status. The girl had every right to be low on spirit, but instead of helping her lift it, he only berated her constantly, then pushed on her this risky ultimatum, and ghosted her when she refused. She went through hell to be with him when he risked and lost nothing.
Ugh, I hate everything about this plot.
One of my notes was that his voice was awful and not at all sexy, but I guess it matches his character.

Annoying characters and plot

I usually love L.J Shen but this was just annoying I found the characters unlikable and the plot frustrating. The continued power struggle made me struggle to finish it.!

Great story that made me laugh out loud

I had been anxiously awaiting the release of this audiobook and it didn't disappoint. I listened to the whole thing in one go and it's well worth the credit! I am a firm fan of L. J. Shen's books and was really looking forward to the release of this one as I have had some trouble finding an audiobook to my liking recently. The characters are great and it was especially refreshing that this book had a funny note (it wasn't too over the top though which can be annoying sometimes, so even more points for that). Especially towards the end it had all the feels and it left me really satisified having spent a credit on this audiobook. The narrators did a great job as well. I will definitely listen to this again several times.

Ace!

Another great listen from LJ Shen . I feel for tennesse as the town always turn on her and cruz can do no wrong.

This is worth your time to let Lauren and Sebastian bring alive the characters.

3.5 Heartbreaking Stars

Flipping heck! It really is quite an emotional read. My heart broke for Tennessee. I wanted to fight her battles for her. I wanted to scream and shout at everyone that’s ever wronged her (it’s a long list let me tell you). The townspeople really were small minded. Cruz was so good with her on the cruise and I was rooting for him to be the man she deserved, someone who would stand up for her, and even though he did eventually man up, he was still a bit of a pr*ck to her. Yes things eventually got better for her, but things blew hot and cold so much, my mind was spinning. Enemies to lovers/secret crush at its best. Some horrible characters, and two MCs that took a long time to finally believe in themselves. The hero of the story though, has got to be Bear, Tennessee’s son, he really did steal the show.
Lauren Ezzo narrates perfectly, her narration of the male scenes is totally spot on, completely faultless. Sebastian York however (as much as I love him), doesn’t quite get the emotion, or the female scenes on point.
All that said, it was an enjoyable audio.

Nothing special and a bit misogynistic

This was a very disappointing book. L.J. Shen appears to like to put all other females other than the protagonist, in a lesser than position. Less beautiful, less kind, less truly looking for pure love. It's disheartening and it makes the characters she creates unrelatable and caricatures. The plot took so many detours in order to create unnecessary outside drama. Many little incidents that really were left unexplored or added nothing to the plot. Also supposedly the main H is in love with h for so many years but throughout all of those years that she is being mistreated by everyone he never stands up for her or helps her out and in their first scene together he is impolite towards her, supposedly because his ego was bruised a few years back, but has no qualms jumping in the sack with her and offering her just that, confirming and making her, by accepting, what everyone thinks of her. A fling to pass the time. No woman (or person) in the real world would consider that there would be a future with a man who straight up told her he only wanted a fling with her because he had moved on from his feelings for her. The characters are unrealistic.
On the narrators: The male narrator's voice felt like it was that of a man in his fifties, his tone, the way he pronounced the words, making it difficult imagining H as an attractive 31year old man.
