When her ex, Chase Black, storms back into her life with an outrageous request, her immediate reaction is to refuse him. But he only wants to fulfill his father’s last wish. Sometimes you meet people who are out of this world, so you make them a part of yours. A one-night stand born from vengeance in a foreign land. An explosive chemistry neither of us could deny. I didn't mean to star in a sex tape, okay? It was just one of those unexplainable things. Like Stonehenge, Police Academy 2, and morning glory clouds. It just happened. Now, my ball-busting father is sentencing me to six months of celibacy, sobriety, and morbid boredom under the roof of Boston's nerdiest girl alive, Sailor Brennan. The virginal archer is supposed to babysit my ass while I learn to take my place in Royal Pipelines, my family's oil company. Little does she know, that's not the only pipe I'll be laying....

Meet Blaire. An underachieving college student with zero prospects and a ton of issues (hey, being the less-successful twin of a gorgeous supermodel would totally do that to you). She doesn't do bad boys. Actually, she doesn't do boys, like, at all. Not that she's a lesbian. And not that there's anything wrong with being one. It's just that...well...she kind of needs to focus on graduating from college right now.

Célian Laurent. Manhattan royalty. Notorious playboy. Heir to a media empire...and my new boss. I could have impressed him, if not for last month's unforgettable one-night stand. I left it with more than orgasms and a pleasant memory - namely, his wallet. Now he's staring me down like I'm the dirt under his Italian loafers, and I'm supposed to take it. But the thing about being Judith "Jude" Humphry is I have nothing to lose. Brooklyn girl. Infamously quirky. Heir to a stack of medical bills and a tattered couch.

I was never supposed to see him again. Him being the man wearing the perfectly tailored suit, who oozed an intoxicating mixture of wealth, rebellion, and sex appeal. One night. No strings. No names. Still riding the high from last night, I walk in to meet my new client, and he’s wearing that same dangerous smirk. Yes, I’m consulting for Callahan Sharpe. That Callahan Sharpe. Billionaire heir who abides by no rules, bucks convention, and is determined to complete one final project to honor his late father’s legacy. Luckily, and unluckily for me, I’m tasked to help.

Reasons why I should not be drawn to Troy Serrano. Number one: He’s obnoxious. Number two: We were enemies more than a decade ago. Number three: He’s my friend’s ex-boyfriend. I could go on and on, really. When my boss gives me an unwanted assignment, and tells me it involves spending time with the grandson of one of our residents, the grandson turns out to be Troy. Lucky me. Four hours a week of having to deal with his insufferable personality and unsolicited advice - the only consolation is getting to stare at his annoyingly gorgeous face, in between our many arguments.

It all started with a bet. When my young son inherited half of his great grandfather’s historic inn, I decided to move us both to the place where I grew up. Notice I said half of the Inn. The other half now belonged to Levi Miller, the famous quarterback who had other ideas about what we should do with the property. We won’t mention that I accidentally injured him during our first meeting, causing him to get eight stitches. You could say we got off on the wrong foot. We bickered a lot as we both moved into the property while we figured things out.

Am I friends with JP Cane? Ha! That's laughable. Besides the fact that he’s adopted some far-fetched notion from the movie When Harry Met Sally that says men and women can't be friends and work together, it’s safe to say we're not friends. He's annoyingly loud, obnoxiously handsome, and has made an art out of poking all my hot buttons...multiple times a day. So you can imagine how disgruntled I am when I not only have to fly to San Francisco with him for work, but stay in the same penthouse. Yup, we're sharing the same air, 24-7. We're talking full-fledged working roommates.

Hudson Bradley is the cockiest, most stubborn, hard-headed man I’ve ever known. And for 15 years, he’s been my brother's best friend. But lately, what I’m feeling for him isn’t friendship at all. Why is my heart racing every time his blue eyes lock on mine? Why does every word he rumbles in my ear make my body come alive? And worst of all, why did I bet him that I could find a woman he and his son would both love? If I hadn’t given up on love altogether, Hudson would have been perfect for me. After all, he was there the day my world fell apart.

Summary
From Wall Street Journal best-selling author L.J. Shen comes a romantic comedy that will make you fall in love...or at least stumble your way to it, laughing.
I would say Dr. Cruz Costello is my archenemy.
But that would require acknowledging one another, which we haven’t done in more than a decade.
He’s the town’s golden child. The beloved quarterback-turned-physician.
I’m the girl who got knocked up at 16 and now works at a diner.
He is Fairhope royalty.
I get my monarch dose from tabloid gossip.
He’s well-off.
I’m...well, off.
When our siblings get engaged, Cruz’s parents invite both families to a pre-wedding cruise.
Except Cruz and I find ourselves stuck on a different ship from everyone else.
Cue 10 horrible, insufferable days at sea with a man I cannot stand.
(My fault, of course.)
But when the alcohol pours in, the secrets spill out, and I’m left with one question: Can I take another chance on love?

Great story that made me laugh out loud
I had been anxiously awaiting the release of this audiobook and it didn't disappoint. I listened to the whole thing in one go and it's well worth the credit! I am a firm fan of L. J. Shen's books and was really looking forward to the release of this one as I have had some trouble finding an audiobook to my liking recently. The characters are great and it was especially refreshing that this book had a funny note (it wasn't too over the top though which can be annoying sometimes, so even more points for that). Especially towards the end it had all the feels and it left me really satisified having spent a credit on this audiobook. The narrators did a great job as well. I will definitely listen to this again several times.

3.5 Heartbreaking Stars
Flipping heck! It really is quite an emotional read. My heart broke for Tennessee. I wanted to fight her battles for her. I wanted to scream and shout at everyone that’s ever wronged her (it’s a long list let me tell you). The townspeople really were small minded. Cruz was so good with her on the cruise and I was rooting for him to be the man she deserved, someone who would stand up for her, and even though he did eventually man up, he was still a bit of a pr*ck to her. Yes things eventually got better for her, but things blew hot and cold so much, my mind was spinning. Enemies to lovers/secret crush at its best. Some horrible characters, and two MCs that took a long time to finally believe in themselves. The hero of the story though, has got to be Bear, Tennessee’s son, he really did steal the show.
Lauren Ezzo narrates perfectly, her narration of the male scenes is totally spot on, completely faultless. Sebastian York however (as much as I love him), doesn’t quite get the emotion, or the female scenes on point.
All that said, it was an enjoyable audio.

So depressing
Wow, that was... hard. Depressing. And extremely triggering. Not only MFC's backstory is heartbreaking, this whole book is just a soul-crushing continuation of her downfall. It definitely is not a feel-good book, for all the humiliation and injustice the author puts his female lead through, with very little rehabilitation at the end.
The fact that she had to do the grand gesture is just such bs.
I truly hate Cruz. He openly admitted that sleeping with him will put her dirt on him, which is such a hurtful thing to say. He was constantly pushing her boundaries with no regard for risk on her end. He pushed and manipulated her to get his way constantly (sex stuff). He did nothing significant after seeing her beaten up. Beaten because of him! It's because of him and his inability to resolve his situation with Gabriella, that she ends up with charges and bruised. Meanwhile, he owned up to nothing. Not once did he stand up in her defense when it would cost him his precious status. The girl had every right to be low on spirit, but instead of helping her lift it, he only berated her constantly, then pushed on her this risky ultimatum, and ghosted her when she refused. She went through hell to be with him when he risked and lost nothing.
Ugh, I hate everything about this plot.
One of my notes was that his voice was awful and not at all sexy, but I guess it matches his character.

Nothing special and a bit misogynistic
This was a very disappointing book. L.J. Shen appears to like to put all other females other than the protagonist, in a lesser than position. Less beautiful, less kind, less truly looking for pure love. It's disheartening and it makes the characters she creates unrelatable and caricatures. The plot took so many detours in order to create unnecessary outside drama. Many little incidents that really were left unexplored or added nothing to the plot. Also supposedly the main H is in love with h for so many years but throughout all of those years that she is being mistreated by everyone he never stands up for her or helps her out and in their first scene together he is impolite towards her, supposedly because his ego was bruised a few years back, but has no qualms jumping in the sack with her and offering her just that, confirming and making her, by accepting, what everyone thinks of her. A fling to pass the time. No woman (or person) in the real world would consider that there would be a future with a man who straight up told her he only wanted a fling with her because he had moved on from his feelings for her. The characters are unrealistic.
On the narrators: The male narrator's voice felt like it was that of a man in his fifties, his tone, the way he pronounced the words, making it difficult imagining H as an attractive 31year old man.

Pulled an All Nighter!
I don’t think I have the right words to fully describe how much I loved this book! This is partly due to my foggy head from staying up all night devouring this book and partly because it was so exceptional. It was a little different from Shen’s normal work imo but no less page turning. In fact, it’s now one of my favorites. Well-developed storyline with intriguing characters, combustible chemistry, and pull-at-your-heartstrings moments throughout the book. I fell in love with this couple. Tennessee and Cruz were seemingly incompatible. They were night and day. But they fit together just right. Beautifully written. Great ending. Talented narration. Do. Not. Miss. This. One.
***edited to add…I can see where some might have an issue with Tennessee’s character as she often failed to have a backbone and constantly put up walls…here’s the thing…she was a young woman given a bad lot so far in life…she was bullied and mistreated by virtually her whole town including her family. Her son was literally the one good thing in her life. If you can’t put yourself in her shoes or find any empathy for her and the way she responds to situations given what she went through, maybe you’re the problem. Also, she has earned the right to be called Tennessee instead of Messy Nessy. Thank you.***

NEVER AGAIN!!!
I tried to give LJ Shen one more try but never again. I’ll admit I used to be a fan and liked her Vicious series and All Saints High books. I barely made it through the Boston Belles and dnf Devil Wears Black. I have never seen such a doormat and this was my reason for dnf DWB. As a southern woman I am truly appalled at the heroine and want to apologize to the entire state of Tennessee on behalf of Ms Shen. This has to be the worst story of all time and the female narrator was terrible. Sebyo was great as always and the only reason for the 2nd star. I don’t know how she gets 4-5 star reviews on any of her recent books she has zero creativity left to share. I’m done!

SADLY (IMO) NOT HER BEST
Whenever a new book comes out by L. J. Shen I try to grab it.. but I didn’t think storyline was up to her usual standard at all and, for me, it was a very disappointing listen with not much romance. It was so very annoying too which brought out the worst of my nature as I wanted to punch the gossips, the family members and the whole town for their constant negativity, criticism, putting down and insults aimed at the long-suffering heroine. Then I wanted to shake some sense into her for taking their shit, for playing into her reputation, for not having a backbone and for pushing away a good thing. Sebastian’s narration was great however Lauren’s was just ’meh’.
Worth a credit? Nope sorry, hand on heart, I can’t really recommend it.. but this is just my opinion you may love it.

Really great listen!
In some ways this felt like a different type of story for this author, but so much of it also felt exactly like one of her books. Her character development, the snark, the tough personalities, the humor, the tension. All LJ.
I loved that both Cruz and Tennessee (Nessy) gave the world different versions of themselves, versions the world expected of them. After you took away some of those pieces, you saw how absolutely perfect for each other these two were.
This was a really enjoyable read and a fantastic listen. Both narrators were great, and enhanced the story and characters!

Funny and adorable
I almost gave up a few minutes into the first chapter because the female narrator was way over the top. However, I got used to her voice and I even enjoyed it for Tennessee’s character. I listened to this book in less than 24 hours. I’m getting too old to stay up until 4am listening to an audiobook, but I couldn’t help myself. Definitely worth the credit.

Terrible
I couldn't finish. The female narrator is not palatable. I have loved all books by this author but the story line was just too unbelievable. A very flat build up to a plot that went no where for me.

Bad Cruz, I enjoyed story, but execution needs work.
Narration was great. Story lremise was attention grabbing. This would be the first book by L.j shen where I feel cheated.
All this woman’s life her family treated her like shit like literal shit. She finally gets some back bone. Takes up for herself (barely) and just forgives like that . She lands towns most eligible bachelor and boom everything is just great? Whats about the years of emotional, physical, and public abuse !? The execution of this story seemed rushed and unrealistic.
I found myself annoyed constantly at the kicked pup protagonist. Who in their right mind goes through this with a smile? And finally fights back halfway then all is forgotten and forgiven ..

Great Writing
Story line was good and super funny. But more Sebastian narrating would have made it even better.

Ehh
I honestly didn’t mind the premise of the story as much as the execution of characters. Mainly Cruz. He had a lot of toxic masculine traits come out especially when trying to help Nessi. It wasn’t a bad story, but lots of cringe moments that overwhelmed me to actually have liked the book
