Story
He told me to settle. He asked what was wrong with me. He called me an easy target. That was within minutes when I first met Caden Banks. I labeled him an asshole, but he was more than that. Arrogant. Smug. Alpha. He was also to-die-for gorgeous, and my stepbrother's fraternity brother. Okay, yes I was a little naive, a tad bit socially awkward, and the smallest amount of stalker-ish, but if Caden Banks thought he could tell me what to do, he had another thing coming.

I asked for his criteria for bed buddies - that's the PG version. He swore at me and said he didn’t do groupies. And just like that, our friendship was off to a great start. Everyone says opposites attract. And they must be right, because there’s no logical reason why I’m so drawn to Colin Fitzgerald. I don’t usually go for tattoo-covered, video-gaming, hockey-playing nerd-jocks who think I’m flighty and superficial. His narrow view of me is the first strike against him. It doesn’t help that he’s buddy-buddy with my brother. And that his best friend has a crush on me. And that I just moved in with them. Oh, did I not mention we’re roommates?

I left it with more than orgasms and a pleasant memory - namely, his wallet. Now he's staring me down like I'm the dirt under his Italian loafers, and I'm supposed to take it. But the thing about being Judith "Jude" Humphry is I have nothing to lose. Brooklyn girl. Infamously quirky. Heir to a stack of medical bills and a tattered couch.

Summary
Meet Blaire.
An underachieving college student with zero prospects and a ton of issues (hey, being the less-successful twin of a gorgeous supermodel would totally do that to you). She doesn't do bad boys. Actually, she doesn't do boys, like, at all. Not that she's a lesbian. And not that there's anything wrong with being one. It's just that...well...she kind of needs to focus on graduating from college right now.
And she needs something from Ty. Badly.
Meet Ty.
Mixed martial artist, soon-to-be Welterweight champion of the Xtreme Warrior League and the hottest guy in the Bay Area. He's cocky, arrogant and completely off-limits to anyone with more than three working brain cells...but dude, have you seen his butt?
On top of being a world-class player, Ty has a secret. And Blaire? She can barely even handle his truths. Life is about to throw a few knockout punches at both of them. Can they handle the pain?

I loved this story. A girl with self confidence issues and a mma fighter with all the confidence to give. I have read all of LJ's other books and I was really surprised by the sweetness of this book compared to the darkness I am used to from this author but it just shows her range.
It did get a little long towards the end. I felt like it was one chapter too long but other than that, I loved it.
Rebecca Snow wasn't my optimal narrator at first but she totally grew on me and by the end I was glad that she was the one chosen for the job.

I don't believe this mess
I was rolling along this story nice and great until Shane starts telling Tye's business. She eats it up and don't have enough decency to ask the man about it After she has told him she loved him. Now I know his past was jacked up and many people would not be able to get over it. However when she asked this man if he was truthful with her about everything he told her there was something he had got himself caught up in that he wasn't ready to tell her about yet. He said he wanted to know it she would stick around. To be honest it wasn't her business immediately, who is gonna tell somebody they are in a brand new relationship with some mess like that? Most folks won't. I thought she was a stuck up wench and the way she handled it was 1000% childish. Not to mention she never tried to sit down to hear his whole story, this man who changed his life when she became a part of his and treated her well . If the shoe was on the other foot and a guy treated a woman like she treated him there would be no coming back. If he would have been walking around calling her a whore whether it was true or not there would be no turning back. Then she knew Shane was biased from the get go which says sit down and listen to Tye, this man you claim to love. Then when it all went down in Vegas when her punk behind wouldn't come to the door to handle HERr business, her attitude was like the stuff you wipe off the bottom of shoes, her twin made a comment that implied she wasn't being reasonable. Then she starts acting like he could have gave her something; like he was nasty even though they used protection, pro sex workers are the cleanest ones and that really pissed me off. By this time her name was B! and I wanted him to leave her behind with all her low esteem issues, comparing her self as less than her twin, got the nerve to judge someone when she is living for free, can't get it together enough to graduate on time when she don't have no one to look after but herself, with her parents paying her college tuition long after she should have been done ass. On the one hand she admit that she is a child of privilege then she looking down a people. Then when he start to sink because when you come from a struggle it is easier to fall down back into kaos when someone you care for turns on you, you better believe she did exactly what he knew she would do which is why he wanted to clear it up before he told her. Then she go and get his no good moma when plainly told her she don't like him. Come to find out that user stole his money. Oh but she loves him, still and telling that rotten Shane she may take him back. I gotta stop here, He was by no means all in the right but I was more appalled by her.

Different than what I was expecting from LJ, but good stuff.
Based on previous listens, I expected something different. I guess because my previous listen from LJ stretched the lines of the romance genre, and this story fits right into that box. But either way, such a good listen and I loved the heroine Blair. She was funny, and I liked seeing her confidence build through the story. Ty, as a mixed martial arts guy, was super hot and I loved his cocky swagger. Rebecca Snow does a great job portraying both characters. Definitely well worth a credit.

3.75 Stars
I've listened to almost all of L.J. Shen's books. The others were a series or tied together with the series and I really enjoyed them so I decided to listen to one of her 3 other books that were stand alone. Out of Blood to Dust, Sparrow and Tyed I decided to try Tyed. I must admit that I enjoyed the other books I listened to better than this one.
Blaire is a 23 year old college student who is assigned a journalist article to cover the MMA. It's at the local MMA training gym that she meets Tyler 'Ty' Walker, the biggest up and coming fighter rising through the ranks. They initially clash from the moment they meet, but both still end up not being able to stay away from the other and they end up dating. Blaire has a twin supermodel sister and a male BFF who drum up some drama; especially the male BFF, but for the most part it stays on Blaire and Ty. Blaire is different than anyone he's ever met and he has completely changed his personal lifestyle to be with her, but he has a pretty heavy secret from his past that he has been keeping from her until he's ready to tell her. Unfortunately, her male BFF finds out due some snooping and digging from his ulterior motives and he spills the beans. When she pretty much confirms it's true (by her own snooping, not actually talking to Ty himself) she completely cuts ties with Ty. While I do understand the severity of his secret and everyone is entitled to their own reaction to that kind of past/secret, I personally felt like she overreacted and did not even give him a chance to explain himself and the reasoning of his actions. Plus, it was a few years before they even met and he stopped doing that part of his past a good 6 months before they met.
Overall, this was a cute story and I found the heroine to be funny and entertaining. I mostly liked Ty and didn’t have real issues with his character. Yes, he has anger issues he works on, but he’s a MMA fighter and he never physically hurts her or other females. Her male BFF annoyed me, he was an arrogant, immature jerk after putting together his actions from the beginning of the book to the end. What an a**. I felt like the ending was rushed and would have preferred a better, longer, more detailed epilogue. It seemed like it just kind of ended when I was expecting a little more. Just kind of felt a Happy for Now ending and not a Happy Ever After ending. I'd say a good solid 3.75 stars, but would have gotten more if it wrapped up more at the end and didn't feel so rushed and then just over.
As far as narration, this was my first time with this narrator, but I thought she did a good job. Sometimes her voice sounded very similiar with the different character voices (male and female), but overall she did good.

Sweet MMA Contemporary romance
I listened to this audio book in one day. LJ Shen has consistently delivered interesting stories, and Tyed did not disappoint! After starting and stopping a few other audible books, this book finally captured my attention.
Told (and narrated) in the female point of view of the heroine, Blair. Blair who I wanted to smack upside the head. Blair who's character is so stubborn, but that I felt bad for the hero, Ty. Ty is a rising MMA star with a sordid past. As with all new relationships, the skeletons don't really surface until the relationship gets more serious. Despite the obvious love they had for one another, Blair just could not get over Ty's past indiscretions ... and that killed me! That's not to say that she showed how much she still cared for him and thought about him through her actions. Despite her words, her actions definitely spoke more about her character and reflected her true feelings.
This was a bit of a detour of LJ Shen's angsty bad boys. The angst/frustration was definitely stemming from the Blair. Yet overall, still an entertaining story with a great narration.

In the beginning, I liked this story. It was cute. But when things started to get real, she behaved like the spoiled little princess she was. One the heroine has no concept of love. You can't tell someone you love them and at the first test, you fail. It kind of lets you know that she has never had anything bad happen to her. You know that she has never had to scrape or fight for anything, that everything is handed to her. If you love someone, how can you hold something that they did in their past against them? Something they stopped doing before they even met you. I can't remember the last time I've gotten so mad listening to a book. Then when she has a change of heart, they need to work it out together. THERE IS NOTHING TO WORK OUT. If you haven't done anything wrong why should you apologize? I absolutely HATE this heroine.
The story would have been better if the author flushed out the story. If the heroine was a little less nothing in my life has ever gone wrong. If the best friend wasn't wishy-washy and douchebaggery. I also wish it was a dual perspective. Can I just say that it's not a bad story? But if don't like chicks that can't forgive someone for something that didn't impact them directly then stay away. It's hard to like someone who has never been through anything, never had a hardship, and is suuuper judgemental.

Contains Spoilers!
Having listened to a number of L. J. Shen's books and really liked them for the most part, I was pretty disappointed by this book. The overarching story was enjoyable enough, even if the writing quality wasn’t. The cast of characters definitely wasn’t the standard. In addition to the pro-MMA fighter hero and the underachieving tomboy hipster heroine, you have the tomboy’s lingerie model twin sister with a voice that could shatter glass (and they actually have a really close relationship), her childhood best guy friend (who reveals his romantic feelings for her much to her confusion and dismay), and her irreverent leather-pants-clad grandmother living in a retirement home. I wish the relationship between the sister and the best friend had been explained in more detail. We find out the bare minimum of the history of their feud, but not really what followed the inciting incident that caused it to grow into the awkward but mutual disdain they seem to have for each other. Nor is there any real resolution to their dispute or clarification of whether the best friend actually had feelings for the heroine or was merely trying to upset her sister.
If you’re wondering why I qualified that “the OVERARCHING story was enjoyable,” it’s because the basic plot outline had promise, but then the specifics that Shen employed to flesh it out missed the mark. When Blaire asks Ty if he has been completely honest with her, he admits that he has been keeping something from her that he isn’t quite ready to talk about YET, but he asks her to promise that she won’t abandon him when he does tell her. Seeing as how they had only been dating for a few weeks, it seems completely acceptable that he hasn’t revealed all of his deepest, darkest secrets, but while he does indicate that he will tell her in the future, his request that she promise prematurely not to break up with him over it seems unfair given the fledgling status of their relationship. But even though she agrees to his request, she claims to love him, and the secret entirely predates his relationship with her, when she finds out what the secret is before he tells her, she drops him faster than a hot potato. Was the secret huge? Yes. Would it have been a hard pill for anyone to swallow? Yes. But she was supposedly in love with him, yet didn’t even wait to hear his side of things before she totally wrote him off. What did she expect his secret to be anyhow? Obviously it was going to be bad, or else he would have told her right away. And then of all the things that could have made her rethink her position on what he had done, it was her new boss’s harebrained justification for why athlete’s use steroids? I’m not into sports, but the rationale that athletes are so competitive by nature that they are willing to do anything to win just seems counterintuitive. I’m sure that there are plenty of pro athletes who are guilty of steroid abuse, but I highly doubt that it is the majority, and that’s likely due to two reasons: 1. Steroids are terrible for your body, so any athlete with half a brain would stay away from them if their ultimate goal is to be in the best physical condition possible. 2. I would imagine that most pro athletes who have spent their lives working toward a nearly impossible goal would feel like they had cheated not just their teammates, their rivals, and their fans by taking a shortcut, but they would also feel like they had cheated themselves and thus wouldn’t feel any sort of pride or accomplishment in their ill-gotten success. And while what Ty is guilty of is very different from steroids, the same reasoning that led Blaire to dismiss Shane’s earlier accusation of Ty’s steroid use should have prevented Ty from getting mixed up in the actual secret--prostituting himself in exchange for both money and higher profile matches--to begin with. It, too, can be bad for your body (as Blaire rather judgmentally harps on, which doesn't even make sense since she already knew that Ty had slept with tons of women before they started dating) and can negatively impact your career. It’s seems quite likely that even though Ty wasn’t fixing matches, what he was doing still would have been frowned upon by his MMA league, not to mention the police, so if his goal was to succeed in his sport, then he took some pretty stupid and unnecessary risks, especially since he says that he started doing it soon after he got into the sport, meaning that he didn’t even give himself time to work his way up before resorting to dishonesty.
It makes absolutely no sense that Blaire is hired as a sports reporter for the magazine to which her journalism professor recommended her. The editor who interviewed her would have undoubtedly wanted to see some relevant samples of her writing, and the only piece she had ever written on sports was the MMA assignment for her class, but it was made pretty clear that the editor had never read that piece when he was surprised by her claim that she follows MMA, which she demonstrates by dropping Ty's name. If the editor had read the one sports-related article that she had written, then he would have known that she would be familiar with MMA. Since he obviously never read it, it is highly unlikely that he would have offered her the job--on the spot, no less.
I take issue with the number of times the heroine says “literally.” She uses it both correctly and incorrectly, and it all adds up to way too much. The writing also contradicts itself a number of times. One example of this is that more than once it is mentioned that Ty does not give interviews, but the gym owner specifically tells Blaire to interview him, an old interview with him plays on the tv in the women’s locker room, a female tv reporter interviews him in the ring after the big fight, and a bunch of other print media outlets interview him right before he goes to Blaire’s hotel room. There are also things that are not direct contradictions but that don’t really make sense, like how the heroine keeps saying that her boobs—which are never described as being excessively large—pop out whenever she borrows clothes from her twin sister. Seeing as how the sister is a lingerie model, she would probably have a pretty decently sized chest herself.
The love scenes were really only glossed over, so if you’re looking for a sexy read, beware that this isn’t it. And the HEA left a lot to be desired. It would have benefited from an epilogue.
The narrator definitely impeded whatever enjoyment I might have managed to glean from this book. She has a weird way of speaking that makes her sound like she is constantly grinning like a maniac, which really doesn’t match the heroine’s sarcastic personality. Plus she has a bad habit of pausing at random places in a sentence as though she had been holding her breath and needed to stop to let it out and take a new deep breath before continuing, which breaks up the flow and ends up being distracting as I try to figure out if there was a comma there that possibly changes the meaning of the sentence from what I thought she was getting at or if she was just pausing for no reason. And then there would oftentimes be no pause at all between scenes within the same chapter, so one second she is talking alone with one guy, and the next she is in a different location with another guy with no indication that time had passed in between. She also needs to work on differentiating between the lines that the heroine speaks out loud to the other characters and the lines that are thought privately in her own head, because I frequently had trouble figuring out if the hero was hearing all the stuff she was saying or if that was just for the reader/listener.

I hate the abrupt ending!!!!!
I was totally digging this book and was so excited when the Hero and Heroine finally reconnected and in one more paragraph, the book ended. There wasn’t even an epilogue. What a flipping disappointment. I really hate when there is a bunch of angst that you make it through and then you don’t get to experience any of the HEA, with the couple.
Don’t get me wrong, the writing was awesome, as always, with this author, but I just felt like this book was incomplete. Not only did it end to abruptly, there was an article that the Heroine was suppose to write, that focused on the unique personality traits that serious athletes have. This article was going to focus on how these traits affected an athlete’s behavior. The article assignment was given but nothing more is mentioned about it. In my opinion, this was a big oversight. During the Heroine’s research, for this article, she could have learned some important facts that could have helped her understand some of the Hero’s behaviors that could have helped solved their conflict much earlier, in the book. With that being said, this novel is still an awesome listen and very credit worthy.

NOT MY FAVE!!!
L.J. Shen is an exceptional writer. That being said, I felt like the book was just 'okay.' In the beginning, I thoroughly enjoyed Blaire's wit and sarcasm, but kind of felt like she deadpanned a lot at odd times (often during serious moments). I loved the idea of Blair and Ty together. I found them to be very interesting character's. I also didn't mind Ty's dark past and his willingness to evolve. However, I hated how judgmental Blair was as the relationship progressed (I get the initial 'shock' of Ty's past but she knew going in, Ty wasn't perfect and he'd changed for her).
