Summary

Warwickshire, 1840s: boys are destined for the pit and girls for the mill. Despite this, Maryann is happy there - until her mother dies. Her family collapses, leaving Maryann exhausted, and Toby, the boy she is set on marrying, insists they wait.

Then Maryann is offered a position as nanny to the daughter of the mill owner, Wesley Marshall, who Maryann grows unexpectedly close to. But their relationship doesn’t go unnoticed, threatening to unleash a world of problems on them all....

The mill girl

Another lovely book by Rosie Goodwin and so far all of her books I've listen to have been read by the same person Charlie Sanderson which I like. I just love look into my ancestry & this one I certainly found of interest the prison although not mentioned was Winston Green just outside Birmingham and until it was revamped was certainly a chilling place. My late father-in-law went in there and he would say how it terrified him when he heard them whipping the prisoners with "the cat of nine tails".
I would highly recommend this book.

Lots of strong characters

I think there were lots of strong characters, enough to make a trilogy in my opinion. I would have liked an epilogue.

predictable but so enjoyable

I was a huge Catherine Cookson fan when I was younger and this book just took me back to a simpler time when pandemics were something you learned in history class...honestly I could have wrote it as I knew almost everything that was going to happen but it didnt spoil it and I was sad when it ended..what did spoil it for me and will stop me buying another was the narrator ...her voice was childlike and i think she would be excellent at telling children's story
