About this listen
The first novel in the heartwarming and gripping Jubilee Lake series, from million-copy bestseller Anna Jacobs.
Lancashire, 1895. When her controlling stepfather suddenly dies, it seems that Elinor Pendleton finally has a chance of freedom. But her hopes are soon dashed when she learns that the thuggish Jason Stafford has inherited every penny, and is determined to have Elinor too.
Forced to flee with her beloved maid, Maude, Elinor finds shelter with Maude's distant cousin in the remote village of Ollerthwaite, on the shore of Jubilee Lake.
But Walter Crossley has troubles of his own. Having lost his closest family in a tragic accident, he needs one of his grandsons to return from America to inherit his farm - and when practical, kind-hearted Cameron arrives, he appears to be the perfect heir.
But is this young man everything he seems? And will Elinor's secret wish to have a family of her own ever come true...?

I absolutely loved this book but...
I loved everything about this book. The storyline, the characters and the narrator was great. I was happily listening away, and then it finished! just like that! i felt cheated of an ending. BUT everything else really was enjoyable 🙂

Very disappointed
The story was not at all up to Anna Jacobs books which I usually love. Story got very messy, who is who at times and the sound was dreadful, sometimes loud the the next minute it was so quite, I got fed up with using the sound control. Sorry but nearly gave up, wish I had in the end.

Very Enjoyable.
I really enjoyed this story from one of my favourite authors when I fancy a "nice" easy listen. Typical Anna Jacobs with characters well developed and likeable. One odd thing... set in 1856 there seemed to be a heck of a lot of white fivers flying about and selling a basket of bric a brac for £1 seems very expensive to me! Yes, the audio quality was not good with varying levels making it difficult at times for someone hearing impaired to listen properly. Overall though a very good listen.

Easy Listening
In this world of troubled times, this story was a welcome break. For the most part the story was warm & showed human kindness at its best set in innocent times. That said there was also just enough darker twists & turns intertwined throughout to keep the listener engaged. The narration was was also very good too! The first time I have listened to this authors work, and I will definitely be listening to her work again

Heart warming simplicity
As a Lancastrian living far from my Burnley roots I found joy in Catherine Harvey's warm and natural narration.
The plot predictably forcast the story ahead . The characters were either good or bad and finally good triumphed over the desires of the wicked.
A comfortable read as our friends enjoyed their drinks of tea. Not a coffee machine in sight!!!
Way out of my usual choice of books I thought that I would be bored.
Instead I was relaxed and smiled, hearing kindly intelligent folk speaking in the remembered accents of my childhood.
An escape from modern hype.
Sentimental review?
Certainly.

Great book but........
As usual a brilliant Anna Jacobs book. Very enjoyable. However it is spoiled by an awful narrator. Her voice pitches is volume from a normal level to a barely audible whisper. Constantly! At times I really struggled to hear what she was saying. Still an excellent story though.

Narration not great; volume all over the place.
I bought this for my mother, who can't read any more but loves Anna Jacobs books (I think my mother has kept her in a comfortable lifestyle, all by herself). She has loved the other narrations, but hated this. Mum likes to go to sleep listening to Audible and puts it on when she wakes during the night, too. Normally, this is fine but this narrator changes from almost shouting, to whispering, in the same sentence, so this is not possible. This wasn't apparent in the preview, so she is VERY disappointed.

Narrator seemed confused!
The story is good (although a bit similar to others, where the step parent dies and the girl is evicted and the pursued by a Randy cousin etc). The narrator kept referring to the grandson of Mr Crossely as his nephew which got a bit confusing at times! Still love Anna Jacobs books.
