Summary

Ellen Dawson is glad when the Great War ends but sad that Lady Bingram's aides are to be disbanded. She can't bear to go back into service again after working as a driver and mechanic in London. But she is forced by her mother's illness to accept her old position as housemaid in order to stay in the small Lancashire town, and her stepfather will stop at nothing to get her under his control again.

Meanwhile, Seth Talbot is also facing difficulties when he takes over as local policeman in a town where the law has been flouted for years....

Brilliant

I enjoyed listening to this book which was read so well by Patricia Gallimore. Thank goodness the two girls from different families both had happy endings to the story!

Easy listening a little predictable

Easy to listen nice narration that doesn’t “grate on you” a little too predictable enjoyable enough

A great story well told

A very compelling listen, did not want to leave it. Patricia Gallimore gives the characters life. A real good listen it paints a vivid picture of life after the first world war

Same formula

I have enjoyed many of the books by Anna Jacobs but they are becoming very formulaic - harsh overbearing men - heroic emancipated women - Christians who have lost their faith
