Story
Inheriting the Magnolia Inn, a Victorian home nestled in the East Texas pines, is a fantasy come true for Jolene Broussard. After living with the guilt of failing to rescue her self-destructive mother, Jolene knows her aunt and uncle’s B&B is the perfect jump start for a new life and a comforting place to call home. There’s just one hitch: stubborn and moody carpenter Tucker Malone. He’s got a half interest in the Magnolia Inn, and he’s planting his dusty cowboy boots squarely in the middle of her dream.
Summary
A Wall Street Journal bestseller.
Secrets told in the church ladies' room are supposed to stay in the ladies' room. But that doesn't mean that what Trudy overhears there during her great-aunt Gertrude's funeral won't change the rest of her life.
Trudy has a daughter in the middle of a major rebellion, a two-timing husband who has been cheating for their entire married life, and a mother with Alzheimer's residing in the local nursing home. She doesn't really need a crumbling old house about to fall into nothing but a pile of memories and broken knickknacks.
Billy Lee Tucker, resident oddball in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, lived next door to Gert, and in her will she leaves him the funds to help Trudy remodel the old house. That's fine with Billy Lee, because he's been in love with Trudy since before they started school. And just spending time with her is something he'd never ever allowed himself to dream about.
A beautiful home rises up from the old house on Broadway, and right along with it rises up a relationship. But is Trudy too scarred from what she heard in the ladies' room to see a lovely future with Billy Lee?
Critic reviews
"Donna Postel creates a glowing narration in this whimsical Southern tale about life’s unpredictable twists and turns.... Postel excels in showcasing Trudy’s fierce new independence. Her reading demonstrates the perfect recipe for a pleasing performance." (AudioFile)

Soul Food!
For anyone who has experienced loss or betrayal and doubted life would ever be live-able, much less wonderful again, this is your book! Might just be a story, but any narrative that illuminates possibilities that seem unattainable can spark hope - and that's how a new chapter in "real" life can begin.
Spending time with Trudy and Billy Lee fills mind, heart and soul with uplifting energy, affirmation of the joys of true companionship and a gentle reminder to look beyond appearances because more often than not, there is goodness within - a timely nudge about the gifts we might deny ourselves if we fear those who seem different or odd somehow.
Further, this narrator is a natural fit for the character and generates the sense that the author is simply telling her story. Only drawback was to reach the end of a story and characters too good to disconnect from.

Entertaining and easy listen
The main character and her story reminded me a little bit of Evelyn Couch ( Kathy Bates) in Fried Green Tomatoes. The Ladies Room is a gentle story of a woman who is jarred into taking aggressive action to rebuild her own life. Just a ride along and fun listen.

Simplistic and unrealistic
Story was too simplistic. Billy Lee wasn't well rounded, he was simply too nice. Story was predictable. Listened to the whole thing because once I start a book, I finish it. Sweet, light read but no depth.

Cheeky Southern Underdog Tale
Trudy is such a relatable character, facing similar struggles and plowing down her obstacles. This creates a bond between the reader and the heroine. Keeping hope alive and adding humor even when your rose colored glasses are shattered on the pavement, bonds readers/listeners and the heroine as they cheer her along. Audiences of all genders and ages will find humor in the cheeky Southern practice of smiling while stabbing those who stand in your way. Of course ladies, 40-60 who have endured similar struggles will find the book the most helpful.

Ah, schucks..
Well gol lee gee, just a guy and a gal who I never want to meet but i will take a glass of that sweet tea, thank you. So predictable, no complexity in characters, no range of emotions, no conflict except one which was quickly resolved, horrible similes, and the female lead remains a simpleton from the beginning until the end. If you have not figured out where this was going 5 minutes after the 2 meet, well, maybe you skipped some pages.
And what was up with the detailed descriptions of every breakfast, and lunch, and dinner, and dessert, and this chant of I'm hungry? Even the cousin owns a donut shop. And why does she need to go to the dollar store when her financial situation is... (you fill in the blank if you have listened to this book. I won't spoil.)
Just awful. Not sure why this book received so many thumbs up. Was it for the recipe for hush puppies?

Cute, clean southern tale
This is a fine story if you're looking for something clean and cute. It's very predictable, the entire way through, but the characters are nice and the story is one you could imagine actually happening. Maybe if we all had an Aunt Gert ;)
