Summary

The eighth realm, the unpassable realm.

The eighth realm doesn’t stand as a realm onto itself, but as a question.

Why do you fight?

Merely gaining levels and having a higher cultivation isn’t enough to pass the eighth realm’s test into the ninth realm. Find your truth, understand your reason; only then can you pass the eighth realm.

It might be Erik and Rugrat’s hardest challenge yet.

Not great. Just milking it.

Story is now just random events. Getting worse ever book. No or little world-, magic-, character- or story development. Character feels so one dimensional with no interaction. Not sure if I will go on if this continues.

Very disappointed.

i loved these books from 1-5. then storywise it descalated and it felt repetitive. I can take that and still enjoy it. but then the narrator got swapped into, probably a better one quality wise, but someone who just butchered the characters that you had gotten to know, the voices he used really represented the details of the characters and then it swapped into parts halving the time and making me pay double. now they're shortening the parts as well. This is basically a big middle finger to devoted listeners, so disappointing and sad. because of this I won't buy 9th realm or any future coming. Really tragic to just crap on customers like this.

Brilliant!

A great development and a great follow up to the previous book. Fantastically narrated and very well written. My only complaint is that I wish there was more and I don’t want this series to end!!!

No flavor

There is no flavor text or world building just the bare bone story.
But what is there is quite good. It' just rushed and unfinished and I wished there was more of it.
And the narrator uses the same voice for many of the side characters so sometime It took me a sentence or two before I understood how was talking.

Narrator Review- Poor Choice

I started with the “included” Two Week Curse and was hooked. I am 50+ and have listened to mid-to- high hundreds of “audio” books and enjoyed Todd Menesses’ performance in the first 5 realms. No offense to Mr. Hellegers, but his tone shift and vocal separation of characters is poor, Really takes something away from the book. I still listen but with less enthusiasm. Hellegers been in the Two Week Curse I doubt I would have stuck with that first book much less the series. I keep hoping Todd will return. If step down was Menesses’ doing and not Chatfields, sorry but…
This book is better via audio than reading, about to loose a big fan Michael.

Review

Great one by Michael Chatfield. Love the story progression enjoy the narration. Neil Hellegers definitely elevated the audible experience. The only complaint I have about this audiobook it’s just so SHORT🤔. I feel as if there is at least another 5 or 6 hours missing. Hopefully this one is just a one off, and the next installment will be much longer.

Great but short...

A great addition to the 10 realms series but unfortunately it was much shorter than the other books. It was action-packed though!

Waited so long for an episode instead of a movie.

Title sums it up for the most part. Would be speaking a different tune if it were longer or the books came out faster. More dungeon diving, events like the desert rock golem way earlier in series, crafting awesome stuff, pvp tournaments.. Would like to see these things occasionally if author doesn't know how to make each realm into a solid one book... Honestly I'm just bummed out and was after a couple hours in.. It's still worth getting but yeah ...

Missing everything that makes this series interesting.

This reading felt flat with none of the depth or character interactions of the first through the fourth realms. Even the narration felt rushed and was monotone.

This should never have been called the Eighth realm, as it was all about healing and a rushed attempt to get to the Ninth realm.

The end just felt so hollow and lacking.

Half the book is missing

From unexplained time skips to problems that, by the rules of the setting, should be easily solved are treated as permanent, every interaction is rushed, lore is just stumbled across, everything is dealt with basically off-screen and the questions are so poorly answered it feels like a joke, to go from the 7th realm to this is the most jarring drop in quality in existence. Do not buy this book.

Two listens later because I love the series before this and, yeah this is just a slap in the face, if you pay attention you'll feel what I meant when I say it's like someone wrote a decent book then just removed 3/4 of it and decided to sell it like that, the set ups could've been interesting but either get solved off screen or are jokes like the "why do you fight" answers, it's an insult to your intelligence that they assumed you'd just roll with what happens in this book

do not waist a credit

sadly the author has turned this into a money grab where he continually makes the novels shorter and shorter to the point it's untenable to purchase. putting the next two books in the series together would literally still be one of the shorter adiobooks in the series. I will no longer be purchasing anything more from this author it's too bad too because he started out so well

Too $hort

This book should have been longer. The ending was to abrupt. I’d rather wait longer for a book to come out than have these short books.

Shorter, but packs a good punch

Compared to previous books, The Eighth Realm is much shorter but certainly brings the action almost from the beginning and doesn’t really let up. If you follow the series, there are several revelations about the ten realms and their purpose that make the listen totally worth while. As mentioned in my previous reviews, the new narrator Neil Hellegers is bringing much more diversity and scope to his voices than his first attempt in the sixth realm book, making this an enjoyable listen.
