Summary

The long-awaited diary from Whitehall’s most scandalous MP...

From Brexit to Covid, parties to pig culling, the Conservative government has lurched from crisis to crisis. With a front-row seat on the, erm, backbenches, the Secret Tory has picked up on all the petty rivalries, bad decision-making and scandalous affairs that Whitehall has to offer. And he’s got no qualms about sharing it. All.

Join the mystery MP as he drunk-texts Liz Truss after a crate of WKD, accompanies Jacob Rees-Mogg (and his kids) to picket a foodbank, takes on the French in the ‘Trawler Wars’, and euthanises Rishi Sunak’s dog—and that’s just October.

The Diary of a Secret Tory MP is an outrageous spoof of the classic political journal that pulls back the Lulu Lytle curtains to expose extraordinary goings-on at Westminster across a tumultuous twelve months.

Critic reviews

"Even funnier than the actions of the current Cabinet, and that's saying something. A landslide victory for modern satire." (Caitlin Moran)

"Scabrous, scurrilous, hilarious and frighteningly plausible. Political satire at its blistering, biting best." (James O’Brien)

"Hysterical, clever and a joy to read. I couldn’t stop thinking.... ‘I bet that’s true.’’ (Chris Packham)

Don't listen while eating or drinking.

Continuously laugh-out loud account of the life of a Tory that is so believable that it's tempting to try and work out who it is in real life.

Satire at its best - and brilliantly read

Like all good satire, it's close enough to the truth to be funny, but imaginative enough to keep off the libel lawyers.

Could have been great but ended up too partisan

There is a lot to mock about the conservatives, their habits, their history, the many scandals that surround them etc. Sadly while this book started off full of wit and humour (although maybe not quite as laughing-out-loud funny as some of the reviews make it sound) it started to change about halfway through and took a much more partisan tone, occasionally sounding like an AI-generated Guardian opinion column.

Painfully funny

Painfully funny. Although given everything which happened it in 2022 I had to listen in short batches as it is so close to the bone. Very funny. Looking forward to what 2023 brings from Secret Tory. And a good narrative performance.

Too realistic and painfully funny

Too realistic and painfully funny, I am sure the powers that be woollike to know who the secret Tory actual is.

Hilarious but terrifyingly realistic.

If you haven’t lived in the UK or followed it’s politics over the 2 years you’d dismiss this as far fetched satirical farce. Sadly the author has captured all too well the terrifying reality of the UK Tory party since Brexit. Highly entertaining listen though and strongly recommend it

Laugh out loud

I listened to this book on my daily commute! This is by far the first book in years where I have smiled, laughed out loud and giggled all the way to work. Read so well and the only thing that gets me… is that there is some truth in it! Brilliant listen for this cold, dark and wet days we are having! Bravo
