Summary

AS FEATURED IN WATERSTONES BEST BOOKS OF 2023

From bestselling author and beloved Guardiancolumnist John Crace comes a blisteringly hilarious tour through the whirlwind of post-Brexit Britain, from the ousting of Boris to the dawn of a new era . . . sort of.

O brave new world, that has such people in't. Or not. William Shakespeare clearly had never imagined a clusterf*ck on this scale. Given the state of the country right now, he would be in need of a long lie down.

Another month, another prime minister - how many have we been through now? But fear not: despite all the nonsense that has spewed forth from Westminster over the past two years, John Crace's brilliantly lacerating political sketches have provided the nation with some desperately needed relief.

Taking in everything from Partygate, BoJo's drawn-out farewell and the disastrous reign of Liz Truss, to the psychodrama of the Tory leadership contest(s), the return of Rishi Sunak and the shenanigans of his impressively inept colleagues, Depraved New World is a worryingly funny collection which captures British politics at its most absurd.

LOL as we go down the drain.

After 20 years in Los Angeles I couldn’t wait to get back to sanity and home but, hey, somebody had stolen my country. After two years I packed up and left for France watching Brexit in disbelief.
Thank you John for this superb look at where British politics has sunk to

it must be the schools

really enjoyed this. engrossing. what I want to know is where they all crawled out of and how come so many at the same time? it's the public schools and prevention is so much better than a cure which might never come at all so while we still have a chance, and counting ourselves so lucky to be rid of them even if we dont have an oxbridge we should nevertheless take no chances and unnediately abolish private education in Ireland before we have same shite here if irs not too late

Sharp, witty and to the point

When I bought this audiobook I knew John Grace wouldn’t disappoint as both my husband and I are great admirers of his writing. Even when you’re a Tory you can’t help but be amused by his account of post-Brexit Britain. If only the powers that be would see events as clearly as Grace does. The book makes a wonderful Christmas present for anyone with an interest in politics. Even if you are only aware of major political events, you will appreciate how Grace describes how the nation got where we currently are.

Hilarious but exactly to the point

I enjoyed every chapter of this very funny but insightful book. Very well written and brilliantly read, it’s a sad comment on the current politics of the UK.

Wonderful summary of the onnishambles

This is a great selection of John’s satiric column and a great account of the shambles that is the government.

So much material!

Thoroughly enjoyable - if painful - romp through a disastrous period of UK political history. Particularly, the brilliant reading voice, perfect timbre and excellent light impressions.
Only minor criticism would be the overly repetitive use of nicknames (even though they were spot on in appropriateness).

Excellent account of our crazy times

Crace captures the events perfectly. No government in our history has acted with less honour or integrity, and his acid reporting brings back every painful moment with clarity.
Excellent book.

Brilliant, Satiristic & funny

The sarcastic satirical characterisations were funny and even though the events happened the satirical story made it worth while and easier to listen to. Loved it!

Exquisite…

John Crace’s demolition of ‘Rish’, Truss, Patel and co was an absolute joy! An excellent and ‘laugh out loud’ listen.
