Summary

Few can forget where they were in September 1993 when they first heard Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation. The show was an immediate smash-hit success, causing pubs to empty on a Saturday night, which was particularly astonishing since the show went out on Thursdays. Since that fateful first series, the show has gone on to win Sony awards, Writers Guild nominations and a Nobel Prize for Chemistry with lines like - "Kids should never be fashion slaves, especially in the Far East. My 12-year old daughter asked me for a new pair of trainers. I told her she was old enough to go out and make her own".

Included here are all ten series of Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation, with episodes on topics like "How To Stay Alive As Long As You Possibly Can", "How To Have A Baby", and "How To Confront The Vexed Issue Of British Identity Without Getting In The Most Fearful Bate About The Whole Thing".

This bumper collection also includes Jeremy Hardy's New Year Cavalcade - an unmissable meditation on everything Yule and a healthy dose of comic Bisodol to flush away the memory of driving up the motorway for seven hours in the dark to spend quantity time with your family - and the memorial programme When Jeremy Hardy Spoke to the Nation. Not quite a biography, not quite a documentary, this final programme is narrated by his great friend and colleague Sandi Toksvig, and shines a light on how and why the man once described as 'an incendiary vicar' stayed so funny and so beloved for over 30 years.

Produced and directed by David Tyler.

A Pozzitive production for BBC Radio 4.

Brilliant!

So missed by his fans, a huge loss to us all. I love his wicked scence of humour and scorn of the right wing.

God, he was funny.

Somehow, he managed to take serious issues and make you laugh while you learned. I miss him so much.

Simply: a pure joy.

Jeremy:
Usually amusing, often laugh-out-loud funny.
Always insightful, always true, always beautifully phrased.
Still relevant, still fresh.
Surprisingly prescient.
Thankfully he doesn't sing!
Simply a pure joy
Sadly missed.

A reminder of comic genius

Jeremy Hardy was a comic genius. It would be easy to let his understated delivery obscure how well written this is, but it really is a masterclass. Funny, thoughtful, heartfelt - it's magnificent.

When Jeremy Hardy spoke, he spoke to me

Brilliant comedian

Having been away in far off lands I have only just had the pleasure of hearing this amazing comedian. His ability to hold a subject for 30 minutes and finish each with a truly thoughtful and positive ending is unique. His humour is not unkind or smutty and he gets his points across without ugliness.
I am so sad he is no longer with us.

Has not aged well at all

Jeremy’s material has fallen on the funny scale and risen on the cringeworthy scale over the years. Supporting cast are dreadful too - reminds me of drama class in secondary school. If you liked this in period, don’t listen to it again.

Jeremy Hardy being his usual funny and insightful self. Later episodes on Blair feel prescient

Absolutely brilliant

Didn’t really get it until I’d listened several times.
He’s insightful, honest and touching with some incredible funny pieces on every subject.
An audible book you have to actively listen to but well worth the effort

Socialist claptrap

At first mildly amusing but as the first series went on the pretense of comedy dissolved and it's just socialist propaganda (BBC funded propaganda at that). Some modern socialists might find some of the material transphobic nowadays but that's ideoligies for you.

I've always liked Jeremy as a comedian and morn his death but this show is woeful.
