Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

The definitive account of the rise and fall of the world's fastest plane from British Airways' former Chief Concorde Pilot.

October 24th, 2023 will mark 20 years since Concorde disappeared from our skies. Yet still Mike Bannister, the last Concorde Chief Pilot, faces the same questions:

  • Why is she no longer flying?
  • Where is her replacement?
  • And what really happened on that tragic afternoon in July 2000, when the crash of Flight 4590 grounded the Concorde forever?

Concorde is an enthralling personal account of what it takes to fly planes faster than the speed of sound, and of the events that lay behind 114 needless deaths—the 113 victims of the crash and, ultimately, Concorde herself.

Terrible Accents took away from enjoyment

Stereotypical and insulting leprechaun characterisation of Irish people and our accents. A little annoying.

Subsonic

Not bad overview all in with a nice bit of casual lazy Irish stereotyping thrown in.

This is your captain speaking....

Quite simply the best explanation of all aspects of the Concorde programme that you could wish for.

Mike Bannister tells not only of his personal involvement as British Airways' pre-eminent Concorde pilot, but also the very detailed history of this iconic aeroplane from design to retirement. He explains, in very clear terms, how the aircraft operated and how it was flown.

The end of the programme is inextricably linked to the tragic loss of an Air France Concorde, this in itself being worthy of study in its own right. Mike's involvement in the investigation was pivotal in establishing the true, very complex, causal chain leading to the disaster.

The icing on the cake is that the book is narrated by Mike Bannister, with clarity and a conviction that speak of his genuine love for the aircraft and the people involved with her.

Having listened to this, probably the best audio book I've found to date, I'm off to order the print copy.

Well done, Capt. Mike Bannister, and thank you.

Simply excellent.

Too easy to dip in and out with Audible. Not a chance here though. Three sittings, gamma rays from the other end of the sofa and a big smile. Well done Mike!

Stunning.

Just my book. Beautifully written and read allowing you to really picture what it would’ve been like to be a part of one of the biggest stories in the history of aviation.

Awesome, in a very British way

What a story. I guess one needs to be an aviation enthusiast to buy this book in the first place and I am, having spent a small part of my childhood at RAF Brize Norton in 1972. I watched Concorde fly over frequently on circuit & bump flight testing from Fairford. There are some quite sobering & traumatic subjects covered and yet the introduction to each chapter is delivered with an upbeat intonation. I like that, attention to detail as I would expect from such a ‘detail’ person.

Just wonderful.

A very easy listen, read with authority and candar

I've not read the book I've only listened to the audible version of this book and we have to say it was most entertaining, eye opening and at times startling!!

Mike's love and passion for Concorde can be heard in every word.

I enjoyed every single second and so will you.

Next stop Brooklands and a trip in the flight simulator hopefully with the great man himself.

A must read for Concorde enthusiasts

This book was recommended by Commander Gareth at the Manchester Runway Visitor Park after touring Concorde. I was delighted that it was available as an audiobook and have enjoyed listening to it very much. Mike clearly has a deep love and respect for Concorde which was beautifully conveyed. I enjoyed the technical information, as well as the mushy feel good stuff. I learned a lot and hope to see the remaining Concorde’s spread around the world.

Epic

Captain Bannister’s account of his life in aviation, career and many years flying Concorde is absolutely fascinating, his affection for its performance, how exhilarating it was to fly and it’s sheer beauty is obvious and his enthusiasm is contagious

His skills as a pilot are obvious but he has matched these with one of the best books I have read in any field and it’s certainly the best on Concorde.

He has managed to cleverly and simultaneously weave an autobiographical account of his experiences flying this incredible aircraft alongside a parallel narrative
of the tragic Concorde crash, his involvement in the investigation and eventually his role as an invaluable technical adviser

He does this in great detail yet in an easy to understand manner that has finally clarified to me what really caused this accident

As sad as the accident was this book is really a celebration of Concorde, a beautiful, revolutionary aircraft that was ahead of its time and one of the finest engineering achievements in aviation

Neil Armstrong said that putting Concorde into passenger service was technically as difficult as landing on the moon, it was an amazing achievement and this book puts you in the pilots seat like no other

A Masterpiece!

Captain Mike Bannister takes you on his journey through the early days of Concorde right up until the final verdict of the courts over a decade after the accident that sealed its fate.

Any aviation enthusiast or history buff will enjoy this audiobook. Brilliantly narrated by arguably one of the most fortunate pilots to have ever lived.

A very satisfying journey that makes you feel the emotions of what it would have been like to pilot such a machine in a time when cockpit doors were open and Supersonic flight was a realistic future.

I HIGHLY recommend this audiobook!
