Summary

In a world where almost everyone has a superpower, Sam Archer finds himself with one of the most useless abilities of all - immortality. Sure, he can’t die, but he sure as hell can’t fight back either. If anything, the incapacity to die has turned out to be a hassle for Sam, with ridiculous requests for obnoxious favors being a primary concern. However, his coworker Lily Dodson is about to make his life a lot more interesting with her unique proposal.

Warning: This book contains adult content that may not be suitable for all audiences, including suggestive adult scenes, slight harem elements, consensual sexual aggression on a male character by a female (slight BDSM elements), graphic violence, talk about self-harming behavior, and alcohol consumption/drug use. However, this book does not contain overly vulgar language, and it has parts you may find wholesome.

I kept hoping it would get better...

If you are into the creepy misogynistic wish fulfilment of what I assume is a fat neck beard wearing nerd, then this is the book for you...

It starts with the potential to be fun and at every turn goes out of its way to ruin it.

I’m glad I listened to it because now anything I read next will seem great in comparison.

A good book but lacking something

I really enjoyed this book the story could use some work but I have heard worse it kept me interested working night shift and made me smile the beginning was a bit drab and started off like so many other books but got more interesting I don't think this book is for everyone but neither is 50 shades I hatted 50 shades I would recommend this to some of my friends but not all of them I am looking forward to seeing what the next book is like

Annoyingly limited vocabulary

As I generally enjoy the superhero genre I started listening to this book with hopes of finding something to sink into. The narrator performs to a reasonable standard but the experience could have been improved by using a female narrator for the female characters.
I was disappointed to find that nothing really happens for the first five hours of the book but kept trudging on hoping that it was just a slow starter. Unfortunately it wasn’t a slow starter, more like a non starter! Nothing happens!
The book is full of unnecessary, young, teenage, male sexual fantasy where the two stunningly beautiful women involved have multiple orgasms from the slightest touch from the one man(boy) involved. This is annoying to start with but just plain boring by the end.
Finally, my biggest dislike; the Author has such a limited vocabulary it’s hard to listen to. The amount of “he scoffed” or “I clarified” in the book is laughable. The worst example though is the use of “I wondered” which is used on most pages. I wondered in this book means I said, because the other party always replies immediately. I found myself correcting out loud towards the end, did you wonder? Or did you just ask a question?

I will definitely not be going anywhere near the next book and I advise others who enjoy good books to stay away also.

A VERY DECENT BOOK

PERSONALLY I'D PREFERRED FOR THE NARRATOR TO HAVE BEEN ACCOMPANIED BY A OTHERS
THE BOOK HAD SOME PHRASES THAT WERE A LITTLE BIT MORE REPETITIVE THAN I THOUGHT NESSASERY
I THOUGHT THE STORY ITSELF IS A WELL THOUGHT OUT LOOK FORWARD INTO THE FUTURE
THE CHARACTERS ARE VERY MUCH INTERTWINED WITH ONE & OTHER
ISAYING THIS I WOULD VERY MUCH RECOMMEND THIS AUDIO BOOK
IT'S DEFINITELY WORTH TAKING A LISTEN
{DON'T JUST TAKE MY WORD FOR IT GIVE IT A SHOT}
LIKE I'VE MENTIONED I THOUGHT THAT THIS AUDIO BOOK IS VERY MUCH WORTH HAVING A LISTEN

Fun story, bad final words

A fun story with a rather unique set of relationships between somewhat overpowered characters which culminates in a nice relaxing ending... except for the last few pages.

The writing in this story is pretty decent starting out strong but sort of petering out near the end almost as though it was started with good intentions and the author had to rush as the deadline began getting closer. That being said, the writing was overall pretty good, though I did get tired of the constant references to a character "getting there" near the end.

The story is interesting and has many minor details that I can foresee being fleshed out into much larger arcs. The relationships between the main cast feel a bit more well thought out than your typical fare and I appreciated that the author allows a great deal of time to pass over the course of the story. It makes everything feel a bit more real when people work towards something over months rather than having sparks fly over a few days.

The characters are unique and have good reason to be there only stumbling slightly with a rushed introduction for each new one to appear. Unfortunately this isn't the case for the bad guys in the story. Each one is plopped in, dealt with, and forgotten, often in the same chapter. They feel less like characters and more like simple plot devices to have something happen to the main cast. This isn't a huge detriment since these flat henchmen characters serve to contrast the important characters who are all much more well rounded and thought out.

One detail that I really didn't like was the main character's powers. He begins with what is frequently thought of as an amazing power, though we are frequently shown how it can be a curse too. Before long he gets a hold of some info that explains how his powers came to be, though the characters make some intuitive leaps that make absolutely zero sense. Then now that he knows how his power came to be, he's able to use it as a weapon... immediately... And it's broken as all hell. Bam kill 19 people 100 feet away just by thinking it. No defence, no stopping it, and completely mutable to the point that he can use it for whatever he wants. It's like his power is magic, not like magical or anything, just like literally just magic. If he had spent some time working towards it then it would be a bit more forgivable but he's literally a master of it within seconds of learning it. This is softened a bit by the fact that he rarely uses it to it's full extent and instead uses it for fun most of t he time but still, it's a weak and rushed plot device.

The ending of the story is is relaxing and sweet and is a nice ending to what has been predominantly a pretty relaxing "slice of life" story in a super powered setting... Except for the final few pages. The story ends on the most annoying cliffhanger which is obviously meant to get you interested in pursuing the next book. It's a cheap hook and sours what has been an enjoyable read for me up to that point. If the author would have hinted at this hook in some way, foreshadowed it a bit more clearly, or even jumped to the point of view of another character to show it to the reader, then it would have easily jumped this book up another star for me.

In the end this is a fun story that I enjoyed (minus the ending) and I think I will continue the story once the next book is released.

It's Romance Novel Grade Porn, people

It's dressed up nicely, and it's well hidden ... but it's lite S&M
porn. If you like the Anita Blake vampire series after about book 5, then it's your kind of lite S&M Porn. But it's still porn, with a Masochist as the Main Character. He likes to be hurt, he Demands to be hurt, it was Very insistent and graphically descriptive on this point.

I've returned two books out of literally a thousand and this was the second.

If you like it, fine. But don't try and pretend it's not a Romance novel level of porn.

Enjoy, you do you.

I enjoyed it, but...

First, let me say that I enjoyed this book, despite the list of its flaws. It’s not my favorite in this genre. That would probably be ‘Super Sales on Super Heroes’, just to give you a frame of reference.

To me this book is somewhere between ‘Super Sales on Super Heroes’ and ‘Good Intentions’ when it comes to explicitness. Super Sales mentions that characters are having sex, but doesn’t go into detail (except some minor humorous details). While one-third to one-half of ’Good Intentions’ is a description of sex to the point where it actually starts to get old. This book does go into detail, and while it can get a little repetitive, it didn’t get to the point where I felt like skipping fast forwarding though it.

The plot seemed light. I’m assuming that the writer is a discovery writer, but I only say that because the ending was weak and there didn’t seem to be a competent antagonist.

Unfortunately, the setting didn’t seem to be developed beyond the specific needs of any given scene. The story is set >200 years in the future in an alternate reality (or maybe our reality?), but, somehow, the only futuristic technology is self-driving cars. But even then, all the characters drive manually. There’s a mention of futuristic technology, but it’s really only really described in narration.

The characters were the best part of the story. Their relationship arcs are the reason to read the book.

I mention several flaws in the story below that are spoilers, so don’t read the part that’s tagged as spoilers if you don’t want to be spoiled. You’ve been warned. It’s not my fault if you didn’t bother to actually read this warning.

Beware, there be excruciating details below. This is meant to be constructive criticism. Like I said above, I did enjoy the book despite its flaws.

***SPOILER FREE***
*It took too long for the plot to be introduced. I realize that the character relationships needed to be developed first, but there should’ve been foreshadowing that hinted at the plot to come. If there were hints they were too subtle for me to catch.

*The writer kept using the tag ’wondered’ when he should’ve been using ‘asked’.

For example:
“Why is the sky blue?” Sam wondered.

Instead of:
“Why is the sky blue?” Sam asked.

At the very least it should’ve been:
“Why is the sky blue?” Sam wondered aloud.

When you wonder about something, that implies internal dialog unless explicitly stated otherwise. It was confusing until I realized that they were really just asking a question, and not pondering at all.

*In the beginning of the book the two main female characters were powerful and imposing, but as the book progresses they become more and more childish. At the end there were several reference to them skipping, pouting, and squealing. It’s kind of strange really. Why would a 357 year old vampire squeal? I’m not saying she has to be dark, brooding, and all staby staby. But squealing like a little girl just doesn’t fit.

*This book makes the same mistake that a lot of these types of books make with female characters. There are no complex female characters that aren’t either: 1) one of the bad guys, or 2) either sleeping with the main character, or trying to sleep with him. This gives the impression that all the women in the world are interested in this one guy, and the ones that aren’t are either flawed or unworthy of his attention.

I’m not saying that fantasy books need to be realistic. I mean it’s not like magic or superheroes are especially real. And it’s not like female romantic literature is any more realistic. But even if he was the coolest and most handsome man in the entire world — even if he was Brad Pit in his 20s with magic powder sprinkled down his pants — it would still be just too unbelievable to accept. Surely there must be one woman in all the world with the strength and skill to resist his charm.

*The first time we see events from Lilly’s point of view we still hear Sam’s internal dialog even though she wasn’t privy to Sam’s thoughts. It was a POV error that could’ve easily been corrected. I’m assuming that the POV for that section fo the book was switched to change things up, and one or two details got accidentally missed.

*In the beginning there was a mention of love being a super power. It had already been strongly implied immediately previous to being specifically spelled out and I felt that doing so detracted from the point. Most readers would’ve made the connection on their own, and the ones that couldn’t probably didn’t care anyway.

***WARNING, SPOILERS AHEAD***
*When Sam creates a sphere of protection around Lilly during the climax fight in the underground tunnel the writer mentions that no oxygen could get past the barrier. But if there was no oxygen in the enclosed environment, then how was Lilly on fire inside of it? Wouldn’t the lack of oxygen starve the fire? If the writer hadn’t specifically called it out I wouldn’t have cared, but it was specifically mentioned. The worst part is, there was no need to mention it at all. The fact that oxygen couldn’t get past the barrier didn’t really make any difference to the scene one way or the other.

*At one point we find out that Camilla, who has the ability to look any way she wants, is deceiving Nick by pretending to be someone she isn’t in order to get close to him. But for some reason Sam just can’t understand why Camilla wanted to look nerdy. He just couldn’t seem to connect the dots. A normal person with normal intelligence would assume that it was because she was trying to get close to Nick, who was nerdy himself.

I realize that we find out later that she looks nerdy because she has low self esteem and she looks that way because it was how she saw herself. But at that point in the story Sam should’ve come to the conclusion that she looked the way she did to get close to Nick, but instead he was inexplicably baffled. Sam came off looking kinda stupid.

Also, when it was explained that Camilla saw herself as a nerd Sam’s reaction was, “But she’s rich.” Huh? He just couldn’t believe that a rich person could see themselves as a nerd, which is a little crazy. There are a lot of examples of nerds that have money. A correlation between money and self-esteem is unproven.

*At one point in the story the main characters question whether Sam has the ability to swap souls. Souls? There’s no mention of spiritual/celestial magic in this book. Sam’s abilities seem to be based on mental magic. It should’ve been a reference to swapping consciousness.

*At every point in the book where Sam used his abilities to view past events he had to be in the immediate vicinity to witness what was happening. The exception to this seems to be when he was ‘forced’ to relive the events surrounding the deaths of his wife and daughter. Are we supposed to assume that we was living at the site of his family’s death? If his house burned down, how is this possible? Houses can be rebuilt, but it doesn’t happen immediately. Especially when insurance agencies are involved.

*This story doesn’t have an antagonist. Sure, there are several people who’ve set themselves against the heroes, but no one that actually coordinated the whole thing. Sam’s boss was the closest thing to an antagonist there was in the book, but he was defeated easily when he was confronted, and that left about an hour and twenty minutes in book. At that point there was no one left in the story other than Nick. I thought that either he was going to turn out to be pulling the strings the whole time and somehow fooled Freya’s ability to read minds, or there was going to be a character that was suddenly introduced at the end (which is a big no no, of course). Someone was mentioned meeting with Nick and his boss and giving then instructions, but then nothing came of it. So I suppose that was foreshadowing for the next book. But that left this book without a big bad to overcome unless Sam’s boss was supposed to be it even though he posed no real threat once confronted.

*Sam is never challenged in this story. There were obstacles that were placed in his path that he had to overcome, but none of them were especially challenging. Usually the protagonist has a story arc with a challenge to overcome during the climax of the story that forces him to grow, but, since there was no challenge, the climax was unsatisfying and all they really had to do was show up and flex their muscles.

*During the fight in the tunnel Freya was extremely concerned about leaving fingerprints, but apparently it was okay for Sam to leave DNA evidence all over the place. During the fight Sam was so severely hurt that his spine was exposed. Surely that must have left at least a little blood and flesh lying around that needed to be cleaned up?

*At least twice in the book the writer mentioned that Freya’s family left her. It gave me a mental image of her family walking away and leaving her all alone. But we find out that she was abandoned at an orphanage. Maybe I’m knit picking on this one, but the melodramatic imagery doesn’t match the actual events. It would’ve made more sense to say that they abandoned her. But like I said, this one may just be my personal preference. The words are very similar, the difference is in the mental imagery.

*Sam and Nick are having a conversation at the end of the book where Sam complains to Nick that he didn’t ask to have a 3 way relationship. However, Sam told Nick the exact opposite several chapters before. It was a made up story to cover up the fact that Sam abandoned Nick while he had been passed out, but it was a definite consistency error from Nick’s point of view. Sam can’t seem to keep track of his own lies.

That’s not all, but that’s all I’m going to mention. There were a few other points, but I forgot to write them down. O well.

Either people are lying in reviews, or just weird

This piece of garbage story falls off a cliff when Freya is introduced.

We go from one touching scene where the protag and his girlfriend profess their love to the next with him being kidnapped and putting up no fight whatsoever when she continuously murders him for her enjoyment.

He doesn't tell her to stop either. He enjoys it, despite agonising for ages about it being cheating and us literally never seeing this chick before until she's killing him repeatedly. And raping him.

I... people like these characters?!

The straw that broke the camels back for me is when the girlfriend didn't murder her 'best friend' for doing this to her lover. And also laughing at his story about him being trapped in concrete, unable to die, for seventeen years.

Yeah. Omg. Hilarious.

Trash story. Boucher can't save this one.

Good story, and moderately sensual story

Be honest, part of the draw of this story is the several warnings it starts with. But honestly, there are many stories that have more and better erotica and bloody combat than what's in this one. Other than having some BDSM relationships, it's actually quite tame, and is more of a secondary plot.

But so saying that, this is actually a pretty good story. Well worth spending money on. Honestly is about equal to the "super sales on super heroes" series.

Interesting ending

I very much enjoyed this book so much that out of the 200+ books I’ve listen to this is the first review I’ve written. Not because of some huge plot twist or other interesting things that makes this book stand out from others. But because of the ending, without giving any spoilers the ending could be seen as being confusing, extremely funny or disappointing. I found it to be all three. Just some food for thought.

Phenomenal concept, dreadfult execution.

I suppose I will start on the o ly positive note: the voice acting was PHENOMENAL. I was wholeheartedly impressed. I've already baught other titles this actor has done.
Now for the meat and potatoes. This entire book was basically an excuse to write about big tits, the hope of a threesome, and sex for EIGHTEEN CHAPTERS. I truly appreciate romance, I appreciate sex scenes, I appreciate something to get the blood pumping. This was NOT any of those things. This was a book with a unique and fantastic concept, yet all was for naught as the story was virtually non existent outside of sex, talking about sex, alluding to sex, inner monologue about how turned on the MC was, and so on. If all you want is a book geared toward sex you have sooooo many better options.

I did in fact finish the book. Normally I'll go through a 50+ chapter book in a few days or a week max. This one took me well over three weeks as I couldn't listen to it for more than a half hour at a time due to the repetitiveness and lack of ingenuity.

All in all? Great narration that in the end the writing was not worthy of. My advice? Skip this one. For sure.

Edgelord fantasy

[NO SPOILERS] This book was fantastic up until about halfway into the book. It stops being a good story and dives into a teenager's idea of what cool is.

I don't understand how they made the switch so incredibly fast it was literally a paragraph that changed everything. Scientists will study this for years trying to figure out the mystery.

twilight for nerdy guys

basically smut without the extreme intimate details, sprinkled with super powers reminiscent of twilight. written at an 10th grade level, where everything is "unexpectedly" said and "breathlessly" whispered.

This book had so much more potential story-wise, but gets stuck in the lust disguised as love and extrenuous adverbiage.
