About this listen

The perfect heartwarming romance for Christmas, rich in historical detail.

She turned the picture of the Christmas card over with her frozen hands, a pretty picture of a family gathering at Yuletide. How different from her own life; stiff with cold on the icy cobbles, aching for shelter . . .

When her father dies leaving Alice and her ailing mother with only his debts, the two grieving women are forced to rely on the begrudging charity of cruel Aunt Jane. Determined to rid herself of an expensive responsibility, Jane tries forcing Alice into a monstrous marriage. And when Alice refuses, she is sent to work in a grand house to earn her keep.

Finding herself in sole charge of the untameable and spoilt young miss of the house, Alice’s only ally is handsome Uncle Rory, who discovers that Alice has talents beyond those of a mere servant. But when someone sets out to destroy her reputation, Alice can only pray for a little of that Christmas spirit to save her from ruin . . .

I've read all of Dilly Courts books. This was the first ever that I've listened to, I really enjoyed it although the tone of voice used for Flora was a bit irritating ....sorry.

This is must for all Dilly Court fans as well as a wonderful feel-good heart warming read for those who are new to her books. As a lover of the combination Dilly Court and Annie Aldington I was really looking forward to listening to “The Christmas Card” and was certainly not disappointed as yet again Dilly Court presented us with another wonderfully written uplifting novel set around the familiar London back streets.

This historical saga begins as the heroine Alice finds herself in changed circumstances following the death of her father. Left only with his debts and “The Christmas Card,” Alice and her mother are forced to seek refuge with her penny pinching Aunt Jane. The plot then unfolds from Aunt Jane’s home as we very quickly meet most of the characters who are equally well written and delivered with faultless perfection by Annie Aldington’s wonderful narration.

At the beginning we are very quickly given an explanation of all the characters, so there is no confusion or trying to work out who is who. Without giving too much away this book is a typical Dilly Court saga with the heroine attempting to overcome adversity in a feel good story that totally absorbs you in the atmosphere of the lives and world of the characters. Horace seems to resemble Mr. Collins from Pride & Prejudice and he certainly made me laugh out loud in places.

Quickly conveyed into the tangled emotional rollercoaster of the story, I was kept gripped and intrigued until the very end and was unable to put it down, finishing it on the same day as I started it.

Would I recommend it? Yes, this book is an absolute must; Floras last line really made me smile and was a perfect end to a remarkable tale.

Delightful, magnificent & brilliantly narrated.
