Summary

Never before have we had so much information available to us about food and health. There's GAPS, paleo, detox, gluten-free, alkaline, the sugar conspiracy, clean eating.... Unfortunately, a lot of it is not only wrong but actually harmful. So why do so many of us believe this bad science?

Assembling a crack team of psychiatrists, behavioural economists, food scientists and dietitians, the Angry Chef unravels the mystery of why sensible, intelligent people are so easily taken in by the latest food fads, making brief detours for an expletive-laden rant.

At the end of it all you'll have the tools to spot pseudoscience for yourself, and the Angry Chef will be off for a nice cup of tea - and it will have two sugars in it, thank you very much.

interesting take on fighting pseudoscience

This book is an entertaining listen and provides a light hearted but serious take on pseudoscience in nutrition and diet. The swearing is not always necessary but the narrative style engages and makes a compelling case for reason and evidence based diet. I have come across pseudoscience for years and the stories he shares are easy to relate to.

Sensible and amusingly written

It's great to hear a well put together, well researched and coherent debunking of all those dishonest, misleading fad/historic diets and food regimes.
Nicely read too, bringing colour to the various characters and quotation.

Timely, entertaining review of pseudoscience

I hadn't read the angry chef blog before I heard about this book, but I'm so glad that I now know about it. the book is entertaining, witty and well written and provides a clear tour through the excesses of the exploitative food pseudoscience world. it's narrated well and is a pleasure to listen to.

Enjoyable and interesting but with its own flaws

The colourful language is used well to illustrate a point and provides great comedic effect and is supported by a truly excellent performance by the narrator.

The dissection and analysis of the various popular diets, fads and myths is very interesting and insightful.

The author frequently reminds the reader - or listener in this case - that there is no scientific evidence for these diets only anecdotes and this is where the (audio)book suffers: very little scientific evidence is used to support the authors claims and it somewhat weakens your argument when your (probably correct) case against these diets has the same problems that the anecdotes that advocates for these diets use. Pointing out there is no scientific evidence for something can be a very powerful tool but when using this frequently, you really should have some literature to support your argument.

With that said, it is a really informative and enjoyable book which I would recommend to those whatever your view on these diets is - although as the author says himself, this isn't the sort of book Paltrow fans will likely enjoy nor want to listen to - even if I would urge those more than any to listen to this.

Informative; with food for thought!

Interesting and thought provoking read. surgessing we use our own common sense to determine what we put in our bodies and not to listen to hype.

Debunking Nutritional Myths

Really excellent and intelligent take down of nutritional myths and diets. Very funny in parts with a good side helping of swearing, which is always good. Highly recommended.

An eye-opener - obvious when explained.

insightful take on what's been proved... i.e. very little. Frank, to the point and better for it!

Brilliant and Entertaining

This is the kind of audio book that makes you look forward to long car journeys. The writing is clear and explains the underlying science in just the right amount of detail. The narrator is excellent as well. This book had me laughing out loud and I learned a huge amount too.

Good, but not very focused

This book certainly contained a good deal of valuable information, and at times it was very entertaining and even humorous. I might even listen to it again, so I would certainly recommend it. However, I did feel that it would have benefited from a bit more focus and structure as chapters often felt like they blended into each other. Often it just felt like one big rant against all things Gwyneth Paltrow, which, although fun for someone that like myself can't stand the whole 'eating clean' fad, sometimes felt a bit much.

Also, the whole 'Science Columbo' thing... what was that all about? It got better in the end but it did feel forced sometimes.
