Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Losing weight is not your life's purpose.

Do carbs make you fat?

Could the keto diet cure mental health disorders?

Are eggs as bad for you as smoking?

No, no and absolutely not. It's all what Dr Joshua Wolrich defines as 'nutribollocks', and he is on a mission to set the record straight.

As an NHS doctor with personal experience of how damaging diets can be, he believes every one of us deserves to have a happy, healthy relationship with food and with our bodies. His message is clear: we need to fight weight stigma, call out the lies of diet culture and give ourselves permission to eat all foods.

Food Isn't Medicine wades through nutritional science (both good and bad) to demystify the common diet myths that many of us believe without questioning. If you have ever wondered whether you should stop eating sugar, try fasting, juicing or 'alkaline water', or struggled through diet after diet (none of which seem to work), this book will be a powerful wake-up call. Drawing on the latest research and delivered with a dose of humour, it not only liberates us from the destructive belief that weight defines health but also explains how to spot the misinformation we are bombarded with every day.

Dr Joshua Wolrich will empower you to escape the diet trap and call out the bad health advice for what it really is: complete nutribollocks.

Lifesaving & a little rebellion with every bite!

As an eating disorder survivor I found reading (listening) to this book very emotional. What I loved the most is that it is written in a very clear, caring way - none patronising, easy to comprehend language even if biology wasn't your subject of choice. I have gotten through it in one day as it was so eye opening and hard to stop listening to. Dr Wolrich is both serious and funny, he has taken great care to explain different diet concepts from many different perspectives allowing you to make up your own mind but also staying non biased and evidence based - great way to educate us to make food choices from the place of freedom, rather than fear. I'd highly recommend to anyone confused about diet culture and the many voices it tries to sell us unnecessary things/beliefs.

Great new view on things

I really enjoyed his fresh new take on eating healthy and to avoid fads and guilt. The required change in mindset after 3 decades of doing it one way will take some work though. Especially with him finishing the book by saying sort your relationship out with food before looking at weight loss, as it is a very unappealing process of delay to a very long held desired outcome, not matter how necessary. Also not knowing how long it will take and IF I'll get there requires a lot of faith... but then I suppose all diets/new ways of doing things require that. fingers crossed

100% recommend

Entertaining, informative and very interesting. If only someone from the Daily Mail would read this, and stop writing so much nutri-bollocks.

Great book

This book was a great listen and eye opener for someone who grew up in the fat phobic 90s . Really clear advice from Dr Wolrich and everyone would benefit from listening to them busting common health and diet myths. This engaged most members of my family who overheard some of my listening sessions and created lively discussion about health and diet myths .

Excellent perspective - disruptive

An excellent perspective on nutrition, weight, and body image, as well as our complex relationship with food. Remember, we are not mice!

In the post-truth era, this book is a must. I wish this was available in Spanish, just as the printed version.

Not a story!

So good to hear some science based facts correcting the nonsense that constantly circulates these days around food and what it does to you & how it can “cure” you. Highly recommended listen.

Brilliant

Loved this book, everybody should read it, as someone dealing with both chronic disease and little extra weight it's was really eye opening, special about following your own gut and don't let anyone ( friends/family/stranger ) tell you what to eat or not

Outstanding

This book combined with working with a dietitian for my ED has been nothing short of life-changing. I started this book before I was able to access a dietitian and it seriously helped me begin the process of dismantling unhealthy beliefs around food, weight, & health. Me and my dietitian would talk about the chapters once I finally got in. I like his sass too - the delivery made it easy to listen to the more science-based parts. Overall this was a profound book for my and my ED recovery journey. I hope more and more people read it.

Offended

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” hearkens back to Hippocrates, the father of medicine. This book is basic but crosses the line for me. Dr. Wolrich states some of the finest minds in medicine and nutrition in this country are simply spreading "Propaganda"! For example he claims Neal Barnard, T. Collin Campbell, Alan Goldhamer, Joel Khan, Michael Klaper, Pamila Popper, Michael Gregory, Grant Davis, Coldwell Esselstyn, Ruby Lathon, John McDougall, Milton Mills, Kim Williams, Michelle McMaKen all PhD's and published authors are all spreading lies stating that a whole food plant based diet and avoiding meat, milk and dairy is the true and only healthy way to live, The science is very solid to support this! But Wolrich claims cows milk is good for you, so is meat, sugar and processed oils!

An excellent breakdown of why diets suck

I was already a fan of intuitive eating. I think this book takes IE a step further and addresses what's untrue, unhealthy and harmful about common diet beliefs. If you're like me and you still had trouble letting go of dieting even after discovering IE, this book can help.

That 1 weird trick!

As a Nutritionist, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading more about misinformation and pseudoscience regarding food and weight loss, and how neither will cure your disease or help you live forever. It’s very easy to read/listen and the language used is not medical or technical even though the author does cite his sources and is an MD. Definitely recommend - great introductory to all things diet culture bullshit. Or Nutribollocks.

Trainers take note!

I’ve been a personal trainer for 24 years training people at all levels of performance. This incredible book should be required reading for all personal trainers…many of whom stray from their lanes with regards to nutritional information being given to their clients. Thank you Doc Wolrich.
