Summary
After years on a high carbohydrate diet, intense running sessions, struggling with an eating disorder, and feeling the throes of anxiety and depression, Michelle knew she needed to make a change. Does the “One size fits all” food pyramid work for everyone? Are there other options, such as a low carbohydrate or Ketogenic diet that may mitigate our risk for metabolic illness and restore us to health? Could this way of eating reverse diabetes, alleviate depression, pave the way to heal eating disorders, allow us to age gracefully, and prevent heart disease? Why as a nation is our health failing, and why aren’t the nutrition guidelines updating with the science?
Registered dietitian, Michelle Hurn, dives in and offers easy-to-understand information while covering the latest research and clinical studies. In addition, personal testimonies and actionable next steps offer hope and inspiration for you on your health journey.

Absolutely fantastic book, but...
First and foremost, this is an outstanding book! Michelle has clearly poured her heart and soul into researching and writing a book that is 100% worth your time, regardless of whether or not you're interested in nutrition. The book reads like a textbook as much as it does a thriller, and has left me both empowered, but also frustrated - frustrated on the basis that so many people have been shafted by bullshit dietary guidelines.
In addition to Michelle's authentic account of her own struggles with food, the book is peppered with the testimonies of people who have experienced a rebirth from switching to a low-carb / zero-carb approach to eating. From my own experience, I can testify that such an approach to eating is revolutionary, and that's especially the case when it comes to the profoundly positive impact it's had on my mental health - it's literally a night and day difference.
There's only one criticism I have of this book, and it's nothing to do with the content. I have both a readable copy, as well as the audiobook, since I want to commit as much of the information to memory as possible. However, the audiobook version has been quite difficult to listen to on the basis that Michelle and the two other narrators (I think there were just two other voices) aren't experienced readers / voice artists. The people narrating the testimonies are particularly bad - there are several repeated mispronunciations, and a rather poor grammatical flow. I realise this may seem like an unduly harsh thing to say, but nonetheless, it noticeably impacted on my listening experience.
Criticism aside, I think this book is absolutely worth your time. And, depending where you are in terms of your relationship with food, this book genuinely has the potential to save your life.
Great work Michelle!

Refreshing
Dr. Annette Boz recommended this book and wow. So inspiring to hear an author present her own story and share the ups and downs and also the realities of the medical industry. Nutritionists created the food pyramid that just made us sick. Having a family that’s gone through so many illness and having doctors just prescribe medicine, makes you realize that There has to be something more. Thank you for a terrific book. I’ll be reading it again and again. Absolutely great information.

Brave story, eye opening data
The author was very brave to share her personal experience and her story moved me to tears. The chapters on sarcopenia and heart disease were exceptional, data driven and eye opening. She motivated me to start this way of eating right away, and after only 1 week I’m down 5 pounds, lost 1% body fat, lower by 1 BMI point, and up .8% muscle. And I don’t miss the sweets at all. I feel satisfied and my energy is stable. I recommend this book to anyone who might be skeptical about this way of eating or for anyone simply seeking more information on the carnivore or Keto diet.

A lesson for everyone
I’ve been following Michelle on social media for awhile. I have played around with the animal based diet as well. Michelle really breaks down the pros and cons of what foods do to your system. I can’t wait to really dive into this with my ultra training as well.

I wish everyone would read this book.
I wish everyone would read this book with an open mind. You may not agree with everything but it will certainly make you want to look more into the research about a proper human diet.

No Perfect Way of Eating
As a soon to be dietitian, I try to read other books written by dietitians. The sad part is they usually end up being advertisements for a single diet. One diet does not work for everybody, keto and carnivore are not the only answers to everything. Couldn’t even finish the book after half way.
