Summary

The Goonies meets Charade in the latest Accidental Alchemist Mystery.

A blackmailer obsessed with gold. A boyfriend who’s more than he seems. And a treasure hidden on the Oregon coast.

Alchemist Zoe Faust’s mentor Nicolas Flamel is back in her life, but catching up with him will have to wait. An elusive blackmailer has threatened to expose a dangerous alchemical secret. Zoe’s boyfriend is out of town protecting secrets of his own. So when rumors of a treasure map reach Zoe, she turns her back on what sounds like no more than a game.

Zoe’s mischievous living gargoyle best friend Dorian, who thinks of himself as a modern-day Poirot, is convinced the map is real - and that it’s the key to proving himself as valuable to Zoe as her human family. With the help of the neighborhood teenagers, Dorian sets out to find the treasure, risking more than he planned in the process. Rumors, treasures, and secrets intersect to unearth more than Zoe could have dreamed - and could leave her family changed forever.

Can Zoe stop the threat to the family unit she’s created?

Good story, but SO much repetition.

I've been following the series of books, but each once presumes the listener is listening to the book in isolation. I'm sure most people are following the series as I am, but it's most annoying when we hear the story of the gargoyle, Zoë's grey har, Zoë's journey through the centuries, the difference between regular alchemy and plant alchemy, and so on. Also, each character's
back story is explained again and again!
Audible seem to do this with other book series too. I wish they could just do a little chapter, explaining the previous book (as we see in series on Netflix and other streaming services). We can skip these easily.
Audible, please stop doing this. It spoils such great stories.

Good story, great Characters... more editing?

I love this series and always want to hear more about what the characters are up to. That's why I became a little frustrated with the constant updates and "reminders" of what has already happened. This story could do with a bit of editing to tidy up the repetitions and formulate a better way to bring new readers up to speed. Zoe and Dorian's adventures are so interesting...I just want more of them!

Way to much rinse and repeat

After all the other books I'd been looking forward to this addition to the collection.
But I was soon left frustrated. It soon becomes apparent, the already shorter story is easily 30/40% padding.
It's not that stuff is overly explained it's that , in some cases, it's overly explained paragraph after paragraph.
And considering the story has been taken from the well known children's film (as mentioned by the author)
It just feels incredibly rushed and lacking real story depth.
However the narrator is excellent and brings life to the little gargoyle as best she can.

Going through the motions

Really felt this was a waste of time and money. I still like the narrator but it felt like the author thought another book was due and just churned this one out. I have used this series when I just wanted something that required no effort but this last story was irritating beyond measure. Initially I was not going to write anything but then I thought, this might save someone else's time and money.

This was the best

This is the best in this series! I sure hope we can read more about Zoe and Dorian! Without spoiling anything I am happy Max made a 180 in this novel; I was nearly ready to kick him to the curb myself.

As Entertaining As Ever!

Nice touches and tantalising details abound. I could have done without Book 4.5 but now look forward to Book 6! Enjoyed it alot - I didn't guess the outcome.

muy entretenida

la historia es súper adictiva como toda la saga, pero se pone muy lenta que la autora se pasa repitiendo hechos y datos de los libros anteriores. fuera de eso, entretenida como siempre

Fantastic

I hope that there will be ma y more in this series. The stories are benign, but very engaging. It's a long time since I enjoyed a series like I have this one. Brilliantly narrated.

weak ending

I really liked the first 4 books. But in this book are a lot of repeatings.
That took the fun out of it. And I think the story this time is weaker.

Lost its magic.

I have loved all the Dorian books so far, even the ones where the author banged on about veganism. However, this one had something missing. It just didn't have enough of Dorian's character, and I lost sympathy for Zoe. Her houseguests were dull and the ludicrous Goonies-type adventure had no real flair. Very disappointing.

Dorian meets the Goonies

I love this series. Came upon it by accident and while reading the first book it occurred to me that it probably was YA and I’m 80 and blind. But I am not really concerned about labels. I think I was in my 60s when I read all the Harry Potter books.

Dorian, a Notre Dame gargoyle come to life, can be irritating, insulting, charming, arrogant and is a gourmet cook amongst other things.

Zoe Faust is a plant alchemist who is several hundred years old although she only looks 28.

The books are whimsical and diverting.

In this adventure, Dorian and Zoe get involved with some teenagers and part of the plot is Reminiscent of thethe movie Goonies.

Blindly dictated to an extremely dyslexic iPad.

Oregon

I have loved this series because it is well written, takes place in Portland and the narrator is wonderful. As an Oregon native, I have enjoyed listening to areas that I am familiar with. That said, the continue mispronunciation of the State name in this book was almost unbearable. It was like fingers on a chalkboard every time “Oregon” was said. It really killed the experience for me.

Oh that pronunciation :(

This is a very teen adventure, a bit different than the previous books where the main character Zoe Faust was also the main focus. I terribly missed Dorian and the narrator cleverly brings him back. Only one thing bothers me a lot. The Oregonians pronounce Oregon as Aura-g-in, not Or-e-gawn. But if you can ignore this awkwardness.. then overall it is a good story to follow.

Great...except for mispronouncing Oregon!

I didn't like this story as much as the first four but it was still good. The storyline with Max seemed a bit forced and almost like an afterthought and I would have like this to have been more prominent. And I cringed every time the narrator pronounced Oregon as or-uh-GONE instead of OR-uh-gun.

Continuation of a Really Good Storyline

I very much enjoy the Accidental Alchemist books. The small criticism I have is the repeated mispronunciation of the name of Zoey’s current state of residence. Most Oregonians will be quite put out if you pronounce it ore-e-GONE instead of ORE-i-gun. :-)

Best yet!!!

This has been the best book in the series as of yet. The recaps and callbacks are succinct, character building is on point, the mystery had great twists and the romance leaves you feeling warm and hopeful. Best series I’ve gotten into, the only issue is when a book is over, you miss its world and characters so much. Can hardly wait to see what’s next!!!

Same words, new plot

So tired of listening to the same rehashing of back story in all of this series books. I understand if it’s done once for each book, but when the details get regurgitated a few times in each story, I feel the author has run out of words to fill the pages for a new book.

A warm cup of… tea

This book series and it’s characters are so well written by Gigi Pandian that they become familial. Julia Motyka’s narration brings the characters to life. She somehow makes Dorian the most human of all the characters. I smile whenever I here “his voice” and his references to his little grey cells. You won’t be disappointed in this chapter of the accidental alchemist.

I love these books

I'm super sad there isn't any more ready to listen too. I drive all day for my utility job and find book series to listen too while I do so these books have been some of the most amazing things I have ever listened to. I can't wait for the next book.

Fun series

The story is really interesting and the performance is pretty amazing if only because of the narrator's ability to read with a French accent.
