About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Three nuns play the lottery to save their failing convent, resulting in a story of friendship, community, faith and love.

The 1990s are proving tough for the convent. The order of the Sisters of Saint Philomena is down to its three last nuns. The place that Sisters Margaret, Bridget and Cecilia call home is in dire need of repairs and, with no savings and no new recruits, they are facing the prospect of having to sell up and leave behind the friends and neighbours in the parish community that they love.

That is, until 90-year-old Cecilia decides to play the newly launched National Lottery and a series of small miracles begins to unfold.

Small Miracles takes the listener on a joyful and uplifting journey as these three unforgettable nuns learn more about life, love and friendship than they could ever have imagined.

This is the perfect feel-good listen for fans of AJ Pearce, Rachel Joyce, Katie Fforde and Joanna Cannon, as well as Sister Act, Rev and The Vicar of Dibley. It's a story about love in its many guises and how it can heal us.

Critic reviews

"Charming, witty and warm, Small Miracles is a gentle gem of a novel, a cheery balm in troubling times." (AJ Pearce, best-selling author of Dear Mrs Bird)

Whilst the voice over took me a few chapters to adjust to her accent, the whole book was so very sweet and came together really well. A heartwarming story that will make you smile throughout.

Brilliant, quietly funny and an overall genuinely lovely, heartwarming book.

Loved this, really needed something uplifting without any nasty plot twists. Not too keen on the narration though but didn’t put me off.

Really uplifting story

I can’t remember now why I purchased this book for my audible library. It is so unlike the books I normally enjoy listening to (crime fiction). And I have to say it took a couple of chapters before I warmed to the characters and got interested in the story. However, I persevered and, in time, I found the story really interesting and enjoyable. I believe the author has a new book coming out soon and I look forward to reading that too. One point of criticism regarding this audible book; the editing of the tapes was poorly done in places. The lack of pauses between paragraphs could be quite confusing at times.

Not for everyone but, to my surprise, I loved it

This is a comfortable listen and not particularly demanding although it does discuss some deeper questions about doubt and faith. The editing was a bit shaky, often lacking breaks between sections within a chapter. This was sometimes rather confusing as you suddenly realised the story had seamlessly switched to completely different characters without this having been indicated in any way.

Positive uplifting listen
