Summary

Fated to lead a rebellion against Rome.

Destined to become a legend.

From New York Times best seller Melanie Karsak, author of the Celtic Blood series, comes a gripping historical fantasy series of ancient Britain, Celtic gods, a fated romance, and the warrior queen who defied Rome.

Britain, A.D. 42 - Boudica, second daughter of a Celtic king, has little concern for tribal tensions and political intrigues. Called by the gods and the stirrings of her own wild heart, she listens instead to whispers of the oaks. But Boudica would be wiser to heed the warning cries of eagles.

Rumors abound that the Romans are amassing forces for another invasion. In an effort to consolidate power, Boudica’s father turns to Prasutagus, the formidable ruler of the Greater Iceni. To win Prasutagus’ aid, Boudica’s father must strike a bargain - a deal with implications beyond Boudica’s imagining.

Wow

I loved this book one of the new Boudica series! The author does a fantastic job building the characters and storyline. It’s a beautifully written historical fiction that brings old lore and a touch magic together and created a masterpiece fit to be devoured! And I loved the narrator of the audiobook! I can’t wait to continue Boudica’s story in the next book!

5 stars if you like this genre -- me, not so much

Romantic fantasy in a nebulous historic setting where the gods determine destiny as interpreted by the Druids and aided by fairies. 4 stars for a good story with interesting, if a little over-acted, narration. I prefer more history and less heart-throbbing.

Great story

Like the others in this series, the details are so vivid you can easily see the story in your minds eye. You don’t need to listen to this book before the Celtic Blood Series, I actually listed to the series first and in that series I heard of Boudica and wanted to hear/learn of her. If you like historic fiction you’ll love this novel. The narrator did a great job with the names and the many different characters.

Loved it!

Great performance by Lesley Parkin and an engaging story. I will admit that it was a bit predictable in places, but I thoroughly enjoyed the story anyway. I liked the setting and the character development for each of the main characters. I loved the magic sprinkled throughout too!

I need volume TWO on Audible!

I loved this book after the first couple of chapters. I regret deeply that Book two is not available on Audible. Anyone who knows of Boudica should read this novel.

I appreciate the author’s imagination. However…

This book is so repetitive. The author needs a thesaurus. Every other sentence some chuckles, or closes their eyes. I also think that it would be better written in the third person.

Not a bad story.....Author needs a Thesaurus

The story wasn't bad, but the fact that the word "waspishly" was used in nearly every chapter at least once was really annoying about half way through. There are MANY other words to describe a characters attitude or manner of speaking. .... I'd love to follow the rest of the srory, but I don't think I can tolerate the lack of wording variety for 70 plus chapters again.

Wished for a Better Performance

This is a great story and well written. It’s easy to become completely lost in the rich imagery Melanie paints with her words.

I wished for a more experienced narrator. While the voice is pleasant enough, the cadence was like a kindergarten teacher at story-time. The pitch she used for a legendary Warrior Queen was like a hand puppet show on the village square. When Boudicca cries out to her gods, the narrator uses falsetto whisper yell. It irked me. So many fine female narrators out there. This story deserved so much more than a children’s book reader. Smooth, mysterious, sensuous, smoky, silken, passionate, fierce, confident are a few qualities that could all be called upon, and best if all together. Sorry but I’m not feeling the Punch and Judy quality of this production.
