I wish that the readers had dispensed with the accents and just read the book, e.g., Michael Collins was from Cork. The pronunciation was poor (Dáil, gardaí).

I can’t even describe the beauty of this story. Let your mind go and suspend your disbelief. Let yourself tumble headlong into another world. I did it myself 35 years ago when I left the States to come to Ireland, to marry and raise a family in Annie’s world. For me, Ireland has never lost its magic.

Amy Harmon is an incredible storyteller so I was hoping this book would be great. Unfortunately, it was all a bit lacklustre. It was obviously incredibly well researched and it was interesting to get more insight into the earlier roots of the Irish conflict (as I’m British so have some prior knowledge). However, it was so bogged down with being a history book that the pace dragged and the story just plodded along. The book is clearly a labour of love and lots of thought has gone into it, but the chemistry between the main characters never really grabbed me. The narration wasn’t great either and they should have got an Irish narrator for Thomas’ part at least. It’s still worth a listen, but there’s too many negative points for me to give it more than 3 stars. Try the author’s Law of Moses series instead if you want a good example of her work.
