About this listen

When Chief Inspector Lorimer returns from his holiday on the island of Mull, he feels a welcome sense of calm. But it doesn't last long. Kelvin FC's new star midfielder is found brutally stabbed to death in his own home, and, with his wife apprehended trying to leave the country, a seemingly straightforward new case begins.

But the grisly murder of a referee after a Kelvin match throws light on some dark secrets at the ground. And when the latest signing to the club becomes the latest victim in a string of killings, Lorimer knows there's a serial killer on the loose - one that's only beginning to show his true colours.

As lies emerge and tensions build, the players and managers live under the constant threat of becoming the next Kelvin fatality. Building to a dark and suspenseful climax, Pitch Black is Alex Gray's most powerful work to date.

Critic reviews

"Gray more than holds her own against the likes of Rankin and McDermid...it would take a reader with the skills of her hero to come up with the killer's identity before the last few pages." ( Express)

Another good read

A great read well up to the normal Alex Gray standard.

Had me guessing to almost the end, hard to do.

not sure Alex knows much about football

Alex writes good detective stories..however the content around the football, from the radio commentary to the Sgt Majorish manager and the complete lack of the mention of an Agent..made the story sound as if it was set in the 1950's..awful! ruined it..
However the story chugs along and is ok, yet also completely ridiculous because of the out of touch football setting.. and characters that would be better placed in an Ealing comedy.

Too much football match commentary which was completely irrelevant

Am very anti climactic
