The body of a prostitute is found at Glasgow's Queen Street Station, her hands, pointing towards her feet, placed as if in prayer, a small flower pressed between the palms. But before any conclusions can be drawn, the body of a nurse is discovered at The Grange, a private clinic.

An excellent book
I loved this book, the plot is interesting and complicated enough to keep the reader interested but the relationships between the characters being added depth and interest. This is one of my favourite authors and I love this series of books. I have just listened for a second time and it was every bit as enjoyable as the first time.

Introducing Glasgow's DCI Lorimer
Never Somewhere Else by Alex Gray is the first book in the DCI Lorimer series .
A serial murder is at work on the streets of Glasgow. Three young women are found in one of the city’s parks.
DCI Lorimer enlists the services of Dr. Solomon Brightman and the chase is on.
Joe Dunlop's reading is monotonous and lacks expression. It makes for a teadious listening.

Contrived story that jumps around
The premise of the book is an ‘uneasy alliance’ between a detective and a profiler. Unfortunately, it feels like the conflict between the two is manufactured for obligatory tension and not based on any real issues. The profiler’s role is also unclear, as all of his contributions seem to be made after the fact with hindsight.
The story jumps around very abruptly. I usually enjoy a story that jumps a bit, but there was too much of it here, particularly for an audio book.
2 stars because I finished it, but I doubt I’ll try anything else by this author.
The narrator read a tough too slowly for my liking, but it was ok.

Poor
What disappointed you about Never Somewhere Else?
As a fan of crime drama's like the fantastic Logan McRae series by Stuart Mcbride, or Denzil Meyricks DCI Daley, I looked forward to reading a new series from a new author, but OMG what a difference, the first thing that disappointed was the narration - dull, no enthusiasm and lifeless, I found myself drifting off to another place many times, and as a result it took me 3 hours to get through the first 1hr ! - constantly rewinding and trying to get back into the story etc etc then I realised the story just meandered through without anything interesting happening, it started off ok, 3 girls killed in the first few minutes, great I thought, lets find out about the character's and see if I can guess who the killer is, but no joy i'm afraid, I was half way through before I realised Lorimar was married, and at the end when the killer was revealed, I didn't know who he was !!! and he was even caught with no real drama, I thought about going back and seeing how he was introduced into story - but just couldn't face it. in the end I stuck with it just to get to the end in case i'd missed a brilliant finale - but no..
Has Never Somewhere Else put you off other books in this genre?
no - just this author
Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Joe Dunlop?
someone who could bring a bit of life into it !
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Never Somewhere Else?
most of them to be fair - harse I know , but I feel ive wasted hours of my life

The narrator put me to sleep
I am sure that this is a great book, but the narrator was awful. His voices were fine, but the descriptive sections were unbearable. In what I assume to be an attempt to calmly move the story on, he was dull and lack lustre,. I had to re-listen to the first 3 chapters several times, to try to give a damn about what was happening. I won't now download any more. I actually didn't care by the end.

Great Intro to DCI Bill Lorrimer
Excellent first tale in a series I expect to enjoy. strong characters, engaging storyline, moves along smartly enough to want to carry on listening. Bill is aided, reluctantly at first, by a psychologist profiler, who slowly grows on him. Together, they unravel a gruesome series of events, culminating in a showdown with the unexpected perp.
