disappointed
the narrator was a little monotonous. he failed to imbue the White Scars, Salamanders, or Ravenguard with any distinct character. the author must share some blame for this too, but im sure a better actor would have done more to differentiate between the three space marine chapters.

Not good
These three books suffer from a cancer known as poor writing. Narrator was good but you can only polish a turd so much. The books feel like it was written by a 12 year old with a 10 year olds vision of what war is like I spent most of the time listening thinking to myself why would they do that?... what the crap?.... get on with the story already!
This is a book I would not waste my money on and if I could return it I would.

Losing the story in the character Performance
As per usual: Regular Black Library Reader here. Take this as my bias.
I was lukewarm on this. This was a fairly bog standard Space Marine battle style story. A Little light on enemy talk, and meaningful interaction. But the actions exciting, and well described, so I can usually enjoy that (hence the middle of the road star rating on the story).
The Negative: The Narrator. So, I've seen some other people complain about the narrator sounding like a racist caricature when voicing the white scars. However, this is not accurate. Saul, does not have a racist voice-- the problem is that he only has one character voice at all. The White scars, the Eldar, the other space marine chapters. They all sound the same. I cannot tell who is talking to who, and the spare dialogue heavy spots of the story need full concentration to follow what is going on, as implied speakers become a problem. Its distracting, and discouraging.
His narration is great. Good elocution, nice pacing, Consistent volume. I've heard a lot of bad narrators on audible, -- he is not one. But he needs to get a bit more range in his character voices.

Okay story, okay lore, but repetitive discoveries.

Boring and flat
I expected better from Annandale and Reichlin.
The characters were all just 1d stereotypes of their chapters and uninteresting. The story wasn't compelling. The action was mediocre at best. The narration made decent background noise but little else. The prose isn't bad, but it is generic and didn't capture me.
I found myself often spacing out and not caring. I finished this 10 minutes ago and I already forget all the character names except the last techmarine.
The whole thing just seems like an excuse to get 3 first founding chapters in one book, but really this should have just stayed as a blurb in the SM codex on the timeline. As 3 interconnected novellas, it just doesn't work.

The book its self is not bad, just really hard to follow. Some of the action scene are amazing sounding but the narrator just does not have the energy to do the book justice. I made it through the 1st of the three tales and just could not finish it. Going to try and get my credit back on this one.
