About this listen

Chef Charlie Hunter's arrival in the beautiful Chilterns is the fulfillment of a long-held dream: to open her own restaurant in an idyllic countryside location. The Old Forge sits on the village green (complete with duck pond and flint-faced houses) and seems just the place for the high-quality cooking she wants to be known for.

But instead of rural peace and a chance to lick her wounds, Charlie finds something ugly stirring under the chocolate box perfection. When a prominent local builder is found dead in suspicious circumstances, Charlie the outsider becomes a suspect. And the only way to clear her name seems to be to find out who the real killer is.

Luckily she has allies: her student waitress, a kitchen porter making up in muscles what he lacks in brain and a briskly efficient clairvoyant. Using all the craft Charlie's learned in kitchens—discipline, timing, preparation, and grim determination—she will be as relentless in her quest to bring a murderer to justice as she is in creating the perfect meal.

I love Alex Coombs books

Whatever she writes its all great! I liked this, different to usual. Tbh I am unsure of the narrator, bit too posh maybe?

I know it’s a southern based book and southerners dont have such strong accents as northerners but hers was a little to cut glass for me. Sorry to say that as nothing wrong with voice, it just wasn’t the right one.

Story great, characters great, loved the discussions on food for the menu. Loved Charlie.

Narration spoiled a good story

Really good story and plot but the narrator was unbelievably poor. Intonation was unbearably wrong. I find it incredible that the author would allow this narration.

Hard listening

It’s a great story, but the narrator’s intonation is awful. I’ll buy the next book in paperback and read it myself!

Nice story but very poor narration

Not the usual style of story from Alex Coombs but I think with a much better narrator it would have come across a lot better than this book did.

Poor narration

I paid for it so I forced myself to listen but narrator was poor! Not a patch on other books by same author

good mystery well told

I didn't much like the narrators voice but it was an engaging story that kept me listening. Good research used for the setting and catering related aspects.

impossible to listen to.

The narrator delivers throughout with this completely unnatural and thoroughly annoying so sing voice. I cannot imagine anyone actually speaking like this. No variation of tone. No sense of emotion or excitement. I can’t understand how audible can imagine anyone enjoying listening to this. So, overall extremely disappointing. I wish I had listened to a sample first.

Terrible

Worst narration and terrible plot. Very difficult to listen to. Wouldn’t recommend and was glad to get to the end.

Nothing

I had liked the DC Hanalon books and very much liked the voice and accent of the narrator, in those books, Carol Bonnyman. In this book, which, I wrongly thought would be funny, was desperately spoilt by the writers fascination on writing in glorified (but un-neexed and un-wanted detail) of men's testicle, etc and bum clevage etc, together with hair colour there! Yuk. This was supposedly also voiced by a woman! I don't think so. So much strange description and unnecessary dialogue on whether someone does or doesn't ask 'what kind of cheesecake?' i.e Was it a New York cheesecake, which we are told is baked!! Not necessarily linked to storyline at all. Sadly the narrators voice was flat and uninteresting. Sorry.
