Summary

A Warhammer 40,000 Novel

A decorated Lieutenant of the Ultramarines recognises the signs of an imminent Tyranid attack, and launches a desperate counter-offensive to save Regium, a proud Imperial world.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

The Imperium fights for its very existence against a threat unlike any other in the galaxy, and a Tyranid invasion beyond any yet experienced.

THE STORY

'The dream...it is a portent...of the end.'

The fortress world of Regium has a proud history, For millennia, it has endured when others have fallen to ruin and damnation, standing defiant in defence of the Imperium of Man. But now it is shaken. Parasitic plagues run rampant, and Regium's citizens are haunted by dreams of horrific monsters feasting upon their flesh and marrow.

Lieutenant Castamon of the Ultramarines recognises these signs of an impending Tyranid invasion all too well. Rallying his warriors, the battle-hardened veteran launches a strike force to slaughter the xenos in the outer system, before it can reach Regium. But as this new tendril of Hive Fleet Leviathan proves unpredictable and deadly, Castamon and the First Company must harness all their skill, might, and zeal, or face utter annihilation.

Written by Darius Hinks. Read by Theo Solomon. Running time is 12 hours and 14 minutes (approx).

Wrong choice of narrator

I have overall enjoyed the story itsepf, however the narration really let it down. Most of the voices sounded the same to me and the Space marines who are all known to be behemoths and decades/centuries old all seem to all have a very young whiny voice which really destroyed the immersion into the story for me. I feel that they really made a miss on their choice of Narrator, definitely needed someone who is able to do more deep and gruff voices.

Finally, a proper Tyranid Invasion story

Great plot, acting not as bad as some people are making out. Well worth a listen

mediocre

The ultramarines knowledge about Tyranids in this story is stupendously low for the setting.
if you know nothing about Tyranids lore this book could be fun but it is full of "discoveries" that have been established as already known by the ultra marines. and yet the book makes it a point to explain how many encounters the boys in blue and space bugs have had and how many decades one of the main characters have studied the nids.

Meh

I can’t honestly recommend this.

The story was ok, but the voice acting was just awful. No range to the voices makes it difficult to follow who is who and keep track without some effort, baseline humans sound much more threatening on occasion than the marines, for example.

As for the writing, it’s ok but definitely not up there with other black library books. Even as a long term tyranid fan I struggled to figure out what was being described at time, although it does do a good job of explaining the mental aspects of fighting them.

Overall, given the time again, I wouldn’t spend the credit on this again. Off to listen to Brutal Kunnin again instead

Good story, not the best narrator.

The story is absolutely fine and it's starting a whole new view of the nids, and they are certainly starting to get even more scary.

But the narrator makes 90% of the characters sound the same and swaps his voices of the same characters during conversations, so it can be very hard to tell who's who. a few different and consistent accents would be nice, they either sound timid and afraid, confident or just weird in a way if it's female. like really most are so timid and squeaky.

But a good story again worth a listen either way.

Great story, Narrator was kinda bad though

Could tell the narrator was trying to do different voices for all the characters yet nearly all of them sound the same somehow and it gets confusing telling people apart. Solid story, would just recommend paying that little bit extra attention so you don't get lost in the bad narration.

Very engrossing

Story built really well and combined the different sub story’s to a dramatic conclusion. The narration gave a different take on the usual pompous Space Marine voices and made them slightly more human, great work!

Great Tyranid Invasion Story

Great story however the lack of Tyranid knowledge from the Ultramarines in this was odd (not knowing bioform names etc). Other than that well worth a listen.

Great narration but slow story

Compared to other stories I have listened to like the Godblight and Devastation of Baal series this book was quite slow and when it did pick up it was amazing but those points were a long time into the book still worth a listen as it’s an important part of the lore if you care about that stuff
