Summary

Many are the sagas of Leman Russ, Lord of Winter and War, most fearsome of the Emperor's primarch sons. At the height of the Great Crusade, his Space Wolves fight to bring the rebel world of Dulan to compliance.

Enraged by the defiance of the tyrant Durath, Russ has pledged to strike him down personally - but his brother Lion El'Jonson of the Dark Angels advises more caution. With the might of two Legions arrayed against Durath, tensions nevertheless run high, and the rivalry between the Wolf and the Lion threatens to engulf them all.

Great book, but be caoutious!

Beware, there are SPOILERS for The Horus Heresy! As it is usual with the Warhammer books, this was is superb, in terms of writing and narration. Jonathan Keeble is on of th best. But, if you are like myself somewhere in the middle of The Horus Heresy sequel, be wary of the last chapter. There are some SPOILERS! at the end, and I found myself regretting going through it and depriving myself of some unexpected eventualities in it. So, I hope my experience will prevent his happening to someone else.

Insipidity dull.

The worst kind of 40K novel; endless paragraphs of mindless battle narration.
“He took his <insert stupid weapon name> and blasted the enemy”, “he roared as he hacked and hacked and hacked at the enemy, etc”, “his MK5 pattern bla bla bla blasted away, etc”.
Barely any story here, just swathes of the above, mixed with descriptions of supposed elite gene warriors acting like a mixture of petulant toddlers and deranged murderers.
Avoid this and read maybe the Alpharius novel; a much more intriguing story… in that it actually has a story.
Or if you specifically want to read about Space Wolves, read Dan Abnett’s “Prospero Burns”.

Not really a Primarch story.

Overall this is a great listen/read, well voiced and acted and very atmospheric.
I was hoping it would be more about Leman himself as the story of the great wolf king. not a lore story which every 40k fan knows.
very enjoyable but not what I was expecting.

Jonathan Keeble is one of my favourite narrators of the Warhammer series, he performs well and makes them worth listening to. Thank you

Narrator is Immaculate

The narrator is fantastic. Astounding. The story of the wolf and the lion is supremely told with Jonathan Keeble's formal yet growling tone.

A must-listen for 30k fans!

Needed more russ

The first half of the book is a bit too general for me. It's good, and fitting that the story about russ is told as a story. It just feels like for a short book about russ. Half of it isn't about russ.

Good even if you dont like Spc Wlves or Drk Angels

I'm not a fan of all that's written about Space Wolves, and ESPECIALLY all the secrecy crap with Dark Angels. But this is a good book that is not filled with Bolter Porn, and mostly just good character development for Russ and the Lion.

Character Introduction

Chris Wraight, my favorite 40k author, does excellent work introducing the nature of the Space Wolves chapter and contrasting it with that of the other space marine chapters. The character of Leman Russ is made complex and nuanced while also allowing us to experience his rage and fury. This book doubles my enthusiasm for the rest of The Primarchs books. Also the narrator is outstanding.

Favorite quote:
"He spoke with a voice that was suffused with a patina of epochal sadness."

Short

Short for the price, and I'm not a fan of the retcons in the second half. not a bad story though, and keaton is a good narrator.

Not engaging in the slightest.

it's a slow drag, that even features Russ getting humbled by the Lion. Plus, no real wording or content with the Emperor but passing mentions.

Great story.

Starts off slow, and is kind of like, I want to know about Russ, but it actually sets up the story very well. Very good insight into the sons of russ. Voice actor is excellent, he can really drive home the excitement in the story.

Howl with the Wolf King

Always great to hear about Russ and the history of the Wolves of Fenris. Hope we get to see him again in the 40k timeline soon.

Fenris Hjolda

A great amount of character development for leman russ and the lion. The beginning grips you and holds you steady as the tale is told. The narration is great, as always with keeble. I feel at this point i just won't even need to mention his prowess. I don't like much of the space wolves writing, even as a fan of the wolves they do tend to come off a bit cheesy, and all powerful. This book gives the story of russ and a pivotal moment in his character. I can't say too much more without spoilers. If you are a fan of space wolves, or perhaps even more so you aren't try it out. It may give you some insight into the flaws and virtues of the wolves, and the reason they are what they are.
