Summary
An Astra Militarum novel.
The Death Korps of Krieg are deployed to a soul-crushing siege in the Octarius War Zone. They’re the right regiment for the job, though victory might come at a price that some might balk to pay.
Listen to it because: Steve Lyons lifts the mask on the enigmatic Death Korps of Krieg, to show us the true horror that lies at the heart of this storied regiment. If you’re looking for a meat-grinder war, you’ve found it.
The story: Krieg is a dead world.
Fifteen hundred years ago, it declared its independence from the Imperium of Man and paid the price. One loyal soul defied its treacherous rulers and laid the world to waste. From these ashes emerged a unique fighting force, forged and tempered in nuclear fire....
Today, the Death Korps of Krieg lay siege to a captured hive city on the outskirts of the system-spanning Octarius War, in a desperate attempt to secure the cordon that stops untold masses of Orks and Tyranids from spilling out into the Imperium at large. The Korpsmen are relentless, ruthless, implacable and unstoppable, even in the face of a war that seems unwinnable. How far will they go to achieve victory, and is history doomed to repeat itself?
Written by Steve Lyons. Narrated by Timothy Watson. Runtime nine hours 34 minutes.

Not a fan
This is the first book I've listened to from black library that seemed dry. The battles went on too long, I didn't care for the krieg or any other character and the main plot seemed bland. A real shame.

Good if you are more interested in the history of Kreig
Overall the performance was good.
I’m new to 40k and love the Kreig so I decided to give it a go.
Sadly for me I was expecting to hear and see more of the Kreig now which the story didn’t cover as much. It created an almost distant feel of the modern Kreig with little snippets here despite the plot being in modern times. And the story would jump between their past war on their home planet and current events. Even in the past war it focused more on the people making decisions and reported incidents about the war but again very limited direct accounts of the actual fighting.
Overall it was an “ok” story but I personally didn’t get as much Kreig as I was hoping to see through this story and didn’t gain any new insight or appreciation of the Kreig compared to what I’ve already learnt from YouTube.

Best listen in a long time
I dabbled a lot with Warhammer and 40k in my pre-teens, and recently found the joy of once again immersing myself into the lore rich universe where there is only war.
I've listened to maybe 150 or so horus heresy and other 40k novels, but this book stands out from them. It is truly a gripping tale and I can heartily recommend it!

One of the best 40K audio books in a while
I've listened to nearly every 40k audiobook, this sits up there in the 20 for me. It's well written, the narrator is superb, and it's a story you just won't want to put down.
I was initially reluctant to buy new 40k Audiobooks, it seems they've been experimenting with some new narrators, and the last 2 books (including Priests of Mars) I had to return, they were just aweful .. but Krieg gets a huge thumbs up from me.

fantastic story
A fantastic story that kept me gripped from start to finish, with excellent narration. I've read other stories about the death korp of Krieg but this is by far the most gripping.

col.Jurten is not a nice guy ( no spoilers)
One timeline fleshes out the background story to the death world and the death korps of Kreig.
This is very much a prophetic story, about the dangers of dogmatic and zealous fanatics and religious fanaticism.
Jurten, an absolute nailed on emperor worshipper, takes it upon himself to stop The break away rebellion that took traction upon his home world. He will do anything to stop this. However, if circumstances where different, would his actions could easily make him heretic?
The Krieg very much draw influence from 1940s waffen SS fanatical devotion and 'style'. This story irons out one of the most popular and most 'hated' Imperial guard units in 40k.
The second part of this story runs in a modern timeline in the 40k universe, from the view point of A Cadian unit who are in close proximity to their Kreig counterparts. They very quickly understand the Krieg are faceless, fanatical, regimented, killers, who will charge a defensive position outnumbered and out gunned. Sometimes for no other reason than to buy time or to hit the enemy for the sake of it. In Kreig life's cheap but mistakes are expensive.
No wonder other guard regiments find this utterly unnerving.
Kreig don't fear death, they welcome it. so Do the Cadians learn something ?

One of the best audiobooks I've listened to.
I'm new to the Warhammer novels, this is my first. if the rest are anything like this then I look forward to them!
The story of Krieg is fascinating and the characters in this story kept me on the edge of my seat, eager to learn more.
The narrator was absolutely superb too, the voices of the characters really enthralled me in the story.
5 star all round. Highly recommended, even if you're not familiar with Warhammer.
