Summary

Magic. Sailing. A murderer among heroes.

Gravedigger Volke Savan wants nothing more than to be like his hero, the legendary magical swashbuckler, Gregory Ruma. First he needs to become an arcanist, someone capable of wielding magic, which requires bonding with a mythical creature. And he’ll take anything - a pegasus, a griffin, a ravenous hydra - maybe even a leviathan, like Ruma.

So when Volke stumbles across a knightmare, a creature made of shadow and terror, he has no reservations. But the knightmare knows a terrible secret: Ruma is a murderer out to spread corrupted magic throughout their island nation. He’s already killed a population of phoenixes and he intends to kill even more.

In order to protect his home, his adopted sister, and the girl he admires from afar, Volke will need to confront his hero, the Master Arcanist Gregory Ruma.

A fast-paced flintlock fantasy for those who enjoy How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell, Unsouled (Cradle Series) by Will Wight, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan.

Falls flat

I was bored pretty often while listening. The main character doesn't really have solid motivation. The pseudo-siblings to potential love interest trope is overdone and kinda gross.
Magic system had potential but left me uninterested.
It's possible the sequels solve these problems but I'm not interested or invested enough to waste credits or time on them.

So whiny

Omg this kid try’s to make us feel sorry for him even though nothing bad actually happens to him. He whines all the time about wanting to get stronger but never practices. He only complains and fumblers around with plot conviniace. Do not recommend.

I tried, cant do it.

I only made it about half way. The writing is decent, but the main character is childish, weak willed, and whines about everything. Sorry, I'm out. It's one of those I cant kill anyone cause its wrong books. Forget killing anyone though, he cant even stand up for himself.

Great start to the series

This was a great book and I can honestly say that I have nothing bad to say or even minor thing to critique. The story was very well written and left me excited to find out what else was still left to explore in this new world.

The characters had good backstories and hinted at much more being revealed in future books in this series.

Brian Wiggins did a fantastic job narrating this book. He had a great range for both males and female characters (And magical creatures!) and did very well at making each one unique and come to life.

I typically won't hesitate at giving 4 out of 5 stars for a review but I felt like this book earned 5 out 5 across the board.

I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of the series and finding out what will happen next.

Surprisingly good!

I had my expectations blown out of the water with this story - several times! You think you know where it's going (and you're fine with that, too) and then it totally surprises you. I had fun and I'm keen to find the next in the Frith Chronicles. Nice work, Shami!

The narrator was clear and fun and there were no extraneous sounds on the recording.

Boring Book

I purchased this audiobook based on reviews and was disappointed.

It was extremely boring. I am glad I am able to return it.

The main character, Volke, was annoying or maybe the narrator created my dislike. I am not sure.

Volke wants to become an Arcanist but why....

I would say no he doesn't want to be a Arcanist, I believe he wants to get out of the situation he is in and this the only way out.
The tone that the narrators uses makes me dislike Volke. Volke is questioning things but his questions are due because of his annoyance over something.

Really disappointed.

Mythical beasts and magic

I was given this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

I'm a sucker for magic systems, and this book has an interesting one. The world is also interesting, even if some of the monsters are just the same as we've seen before. Still, not everything has to be new, right? I think the familiar monsters made it a little easier to keep track of what was new.

This was a fun book and I definitely want to get the sequel.

Great Fantasy

If you’re looking for a young adult fantasy with exceptional world building, you will find it here. The magical system was well thought out, where characters gained their powers from a mystical creature that they bonded with. The mystical creatures would determine the unique powers that a person would gain. This allowed for a variety of powers unique to different people. The characters in the story are all strong characters, each with backstories of their own.

The narrator was clear and did a good job, and I am looking forward to see how the series progresses.

the final battle was rushed and boring.

the ending was boring and rushed as if the author had reached a page limit. there was also barely any character improvement. I feel volke didn't improve or get strong enough to fight against ruma. plus it wasn't even him who killed ruma. ending was a let down.
