Summary

Midlife is supposed to be messy, but this is a full-on catastrophic crisis.

Just when I thought life might be getting back to normal—normal being a relative word—I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Marriage proposal from the Grim Reaper? Yes.

Beautiful healthy baby? Yes.

Friends and family safe? Yes.

Ghost of my worst enemy sitting on my front porch? OMG. Yep.

With the ghostly world imploding around me, I’m going to need more than superglue to repair it.

Question? Am I willing to do what has to be done?

Answer? I’m about to find out.

To say forty has been an eventful year is an understatement.

On the contrary, it’s turning out to be a seriously hard-knock midlife.

Can not get enough

Laugh out loud funny. I have gone through one book straight after the other. The stories keep getting better. Grams is funnier and the individual characters develop. The narrator is seemless.

Love book but uncharacteristic cliff hanger

Love book and have read the series and do recommend this book. This is just one observation in a great series and sure this will be explained in the next book. I assume it shows the chance an author takes when use the 'cliff hanger' genre to entice the reader. After being so enthralled that I have read the series in continiun...and will read the next book but i admit this cliffhanger was so out of character = reaction of dissapointment...the author ...after 8 great books...is humour. Happy reading....

Suffered from bad editing

The horseman is pestilence, not conquest. The ghost known as "Birdie" was Ethel the hooker, not Sister Catherine. A note from the performer was left in.

Stringing it out

Stringing it out too much now. Losing interest fast. Sometimes you just need to know when to end a series

Fantastic

I absolutely love these books they make my ribs hurt with laughing and then the serious part. I love all the characters and the guest ones. The 4 spectres of the apocalypse awesome made me chuckle so much. Keep these books coming. I will never get tired of listening to these. Narrator, thank you so much. Your knowledge of these characters is excellent. You bring them to life along with the storyline perfectly.

Not edited well

Overall, I enjoy this series but with each book in the series the audio editing quality decreases. There is an internal note recorded by the narrator about the pronunciation of the name Helene, that is not removed from the recording. There is also several times when you can hear a phone ring or vibrating of a phone on a hard surface. Each book also repeats the last chapter of the last book. These audio quality issues are distracting from the story. Please revisit the recordings.

Up til now good series

I loved the books in the series up until now and truthfully if the preview of the book had said it was all about the four horsemen being drag queens I wouldn't have bought it or the next book. I love long series but this one is done for me. The story just went in a completely different direction and got cheesy and in the last book the characters voices got all mixed up. Almost all the characters seemed to switch to each other's voices. I had a hard time following and after the first 9 chapters I can't go any farther. I think Jessica Almasy is one of the better narrators so I'm not entirely sure what happened. I really tried to push through... I just can't.

More of the same

Half way through the book, you get to hear edits for the book that haven’t been taken out.

Hilarity ensues! Can’t put it down! Delightful character development

The four horsemen of the apocalypse have absolutely terrible jobs. They are the embodiment of war, famine, conquest, and death. If that is your immortal lot in life, you’d better have something else, very different, in your immortality to keep your sanity! These four happen to be great comedians and fabulous drag queens! I adore Peterman’s commitment to representing those usually forgotten. From the beginning, there is a loving, developing, lesbian relationship depicted with warmth & realities of predominant southern culture. Later she introduces an asexual individual in an equally natural manner. Now we have four flamboyant, (self identified) queer men who are also Queens. They are also deeply isolated by the nature of their occupations. They contain multitudes. Also, great one liner jokes! One liners which, per usual, contain cryptic messages. One simply has to listen long enough to understand.

Of course she also represents love between immortal/human, ghost/living, ghost/ghost, ghost/immortal & immortals.

This is a fantastic installation in a great series! I cannot fathom how full Peterman’s brain must be to have created so very many wonderful, and wonderfully complex, characters. Add to this she has written several different series, and my mind is blown!

Almasy is great! The audio production feels a bit rushed given there was a voice actress note about pronunciation when I first listened. It had been edited by my second lesson. However, her usual excellent differentiation between voices gets a little jumbled in this book. It feels like she was fatigued. Rushing for a production date costs readership. Give your authors and actors enough time to excel!

What happened to the original story?

I started this series for the ghost story aspect. Several books in and I am down a rabbit hole. Not enjoying the sexual content or explicit language. A little is OK but this is the wild west. This book was OK.

good story, need’s better editing

A fun story but there are several inaccuracies such as Birdy being Sister Catherine and poor editing as mentioned in a previous review.

This needs a repair

I listened to the whole series and generally enjoyed it. But I think Jessica Almaty would be mortified to realize that an internal note got published. I don’t know if she does her own editing or if someone else does, but it’s so obviously outlined as something NOT meant for the listener, that it needs repaired, replaced and updated for each who purchased.

Also, Robyn Peterson overuses “however” to the degree that it stands out tremendously. She needs a bold enough editor to actually tell her and fix it.

The stories are interesting, but I hate that each book after part one starts with the full last chapter of the previous. That’s overkill and wasted word-count.

I hope the reader and writer get this information, though I know some authors and voice actors avoid critique. The audio flub would be easy to fix though. The editorial note could help Peterman in the future.

Mid-Life Rules

It is hard to find the words to explain how I’ve fallen in love with the characters within these books. This includes the secondary characters introduced in each of the novels.

I find so many parts of myself within the characters and the relationships between them. I so enjoy the use of “southern courtesy rules” and the breaking of them …. Even the use of crass, gross, profanity is accomplished with such gentility and humor.
I have so appreciated this series. The author has raised so many thought provoking ideas and life questions and arrive at answers so similar to the my own.

Darn Good!

I didn’t expect the 4 horseman to be what they are but it really made for great banter and comedy relief! Still going to need the recipe for Junes cookies. I’m on edge with the breakout at the end of the book and am hoping the next two books can bring peace and happiness in to order.
