Summary

The end is always a beginning.

Weighed down by scandal, Captain Jamie Callahan must choose between saving his family’s reputation and political aspirations or taking down the enemy once and for all. Whatever choice Jamie makes will have lasting repercussions he can’t escape and that Staff Sergeant Kyle Brannigan will suffer as well.

Against an escalating political nightmare, the one truth Jamie can believe in is Kyle’s love, but that won’t be enough to clear their names. The odds are stacked ever higher against Alpha Team, and outmaneuvering an enemy metahuman is a daunting, almost impossible task. When the other side strikes, all hell breaks loose in the country’s capital, and no one is prepared for the tragedy the attack leaves in its wake.

Fantastic series

I have absolutely enjoyed this series, with lots of action, suspense, great romance with the main characters, Jamie and Kyle, Sean and Alexei. Definitely listen to again. Excellent narration as always.

An Amazing Conclusion...Or is it?

Hailey Turner has given us the best action packed series available on Audible with Metahuman Files and In the Requiem was my absolute favourite of the Five part series.
It was an amazing conclusion and it had me gripped from the start, it took me on a roller coaster or emotions, tearing me down and building me back up again. Very clever Hailey, very clever lol 😉.
I have stated in previous reviews that the world building and character development is masterful and Hailey just gets better with each book she writes.
Although this is supposed to be the final instalment of the series there is the possibility of more and I hope there is a story to be made with Liam in mind in the future.
Greg Boudreaux has a talent that brings to life the characters and their emotions. He is definitely one of my favourite narrators.

All the stars for the Metahuman team!

You need to read the previous books in the series before this one. Not only does it follow a storyline from book 1 but there are also a lot of recurring characters, so you might be very lost if you just jump in on this last one.

I've only listened to audiobooks in this series, aside from some of the accompanying novellas which I've read, mostly because Greg Boudreaux is one of my favorite narrators ever and I wanted to experience it all through his voice. Not that there weren't some moments in which I wished I could skim/ffwd through them, because if you are a fan of Ms. Turner you already know that she's a master torturer and that she'll make you cry at least once (if not more times) throughout the book. Still, Greg has a way to bring these characters and their stories to life that makes it a no-brainer to brave those scenes by listening to the audiobooks.

I read Files of the Heart (the last accompanying novella) before listening to In the Requiem, so I kind of knew what had happened. Let me tell you now, it didn't make it any easier to listen to what happened in this book, so be prepared. If you thought book 4 was hard, this one is harder. I don't know how many tissues I went through while listening, I really couldn't keep track. It was worth it, though, as the end was all the sweeter because of all the pain.

This is a series I'll listen to again, especially now that it's done, although Ms. Turner has promised she'll write Liam's story sometime in the future. In the meantime, I can't wait to listen to the novellas in audio next year!

Stunned

Story: I am stunned. Utterly, totally and absolutely stunned at what I just experienced with this book.
I can honestly say I didn't even read a blurb or any reviews, jumping in straight from the previous part and I was not prepared for what has been served to me.
I just finished listening and I am still crying. Just when I thought I've seen it all in this series, the author served me with the best kind of emotional sucker punch, with added benefit of amazing plot and jaw droppingly good writing.
This series and this book particularly is not for the faint of heart. It's pain, anguish, romance, action, hope and found family. All of the best kind. With some heart attacks along the way to keep the reader glued to the story.
Narration: Performance on par with the stellar writing. Brilliant performance and impressive variety of voices held up throughout dynamic and multi - people scenes. Just brilliant.

STUNNING!!!

This story is very powerful. Turner's writing kept me on the edge of my seat. Boudreaux's narration takes Turner's writing to a whole other level. He has an absolute gift in causing so many emotions within this audio. It is truly a book filled with twist, turns, gut-wrenching emotions, tears, and a few surprises. Definitely a fantastic series.

Love this world

I really really wanted to throttle Hayley for making me cry for quite awhile until she rectified the situation. Hayley and Greg equal a magnificent story

Sorry to see the end

This book takes place far in the future and this is a science fiction, but there are elements of the dystopian that ring true. Megacities, places too hot to live, certain foods no longer available – this is all in earth’s future if we don’t do something. This book isn’t preachy, just predictive.

This book was also rough on my heart. I’ve fallen in love with Alpha team. The Metahumans keep their existence a secret while fighting those who would destroy America. Led by Captain Jamie Callahan, this band of superhuman men and women fight evil. Jamie’s lover, Kyle Brannigan, is also part of the team. Their love is illicit and only their team knows. Kyle can only wear his engagement ring while in the privacy of their condo. To top it all, Jamie’s father is a senator running for president. Because of an attack at one of his rallies in the last book, his poll numbers have tanked.

Alexei Dvorkin is another member of Alpha team and adopted brother of Kyle. His lover on the team is also the newest member, Sean Delaney. Their love affair is as epic as Jamie and Kyle’s, and I’ve enjoyed watching the couples as they navigate working together in dangerous situations and then going home. Alexei and Sean were kidnapped and tortured in the last book and I was glad to see those events and their aftermath weren’t glossed over.

In this story, they are up against a precog. How does one fight someone who can see the future? Or believes he can? A man who sets up a scenario so untenable that Jamie has to make the ultimate choice. As I said, this book hurt my heart.

As the fifth book in the series, it is definitely more enjoyable if you’ve read the others, but it stands on its own as well. An action-packed book that kept me on the edge of my seat while giving me moments of humor and, of course, lots of love. Big strong men in sappy love. Awesome.

Greg Boudreaux narrates this series and I think that’s a perfect fit. He can do Russian along with other accents as well as great voices for all the strong women on the team. I enjoyed this book and am sorry to see this brilliant series come to an end.
